You should set up a street stall for this.

Tim F, Sunday, 28 April 2013 21:19 (ten years ago) link

So yeah this Rudimental album is pretty good but suffers a bit from favouring jump-up Britsoul almost entirely over MCs (Angel Haze excepted), so while there's loads of great stuff on there the overall effect is a bit Grange Hill rave. Also TWO tracks featuring Emeli Sande ffs, as if there's a human being alive on the planet right now that is suffering from insufficient Emeli Sande in their life.

The best tracks are fantastic but I dunno, needs a bit more ruff to go with the smooth. Basically what I am getting at is 'why have you forsaken Shantie?' ;_;

Matt DC, Tuesday, 30 April 2013 09:25 (ten years ago) link

Ha, Grange Hill rave.

Deafening silence (DL), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 09:30 (ten years ago) link

i actively try to avoid emeli sandé and yet there she fucking is on both the fantasia and rudimental albums within the space of two weeks

sande's, i mean

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 09:50 (ten years ago) link

The Sande track is one of the few decent songs on the new wiley album.

oppet, Tuesday, 30 April 2013 10:30 (ten years ago) link

Ella Eyre did a much better job on Sande's "Free" when I saw them live last week. They should have kept it in-house!

does emeli sande have any other songs like "heaven"? really liked that one, but from what i understand the rest of the album is adult-contempo dross...correct?

monotony, Tuesday, 30 April 2013 13:22 (ten years ago) link

sounds about right to me

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 19:17 (ten years ago) link

I don't mind "Next to Me", but it's not omnipresent here

The Reverend, Tuesday, 30 April 2013 21:01 (ten years ago) link

#46 in the US, that sounds about right

Heaven was great but... didn't exactly require great vision from anyone concerned.

Every time I hear it I imagine Skins-esque kids coming down off their first pill and watching that video and just weeping at the girl with her giraffe. It's the drippiest thing I've ever heard.

frittered some time away doing a bit of reading on black butter, in my signature morbidly ott style

quite the little vertically integrated ecosystem they've got going - artist management company starts the label on the side, amir amor who joined rudimental after the funky stuff but before 'spoons' runs the studio major tom's (with the guy from 679 and xl) where lots of brit stuff gets made, press/a&r person is former bbc radio and brings the clubby blippy side in, etc

amor appears to be the key man all-round pop svengali dude, check him out, twice mentions bananarama/fun boy three in separate interviews which of course makes a lot of sense. also his and mnek's shared love of jam & lewis

btw sugababes/mks (keep wanting to call them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kima,_Keisha,_and_Pam ) appear to be doing their album in that hq studio which bodes excellently

The "Bass Drop Mix" of "Listen to the Badman" in particular is (((((|O_O|)))))

No way is this better than the original version with its ridiculous rave chords and disembodied diva vocals.

― Matt DC, Monday, April 22, 2013 9:27 AM (2 weeks ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Haha, turns out my copy of the original was mislabeled as being the Bass Drop Mix, and since it did indeed have a pretty fucking big bass drop it didn't occur to me to question that...

'Baby' is easily the best thing on the Rudimental album innit? Not a bad album but we'd heard all the best songs on it before.

So much great stuff on Black Butter though, been going through the back-catalogue. Kidnap Kid is brilliant!

"baby" is rly good, damn

umm also gonna profess my love for the chris malinchak one. i like drippiness tho.

dyl, Sunday, 12 May 2013 23:54 (ten years ago) link

One thing I really like about "Baby" is how it builds so remorselessly (though gracefully) from airy vocal house to trippy deepness, and then resets itself back to the beginning, only to go through the process again. It really traverses the terrain of possibilities afforded by the weird dance-pop meets deep house equation of the moment.

Tim F, Monday, 13 May 2013 01:02 (ten years ago) link

it is brilliant how the drop is made to sound SO dramatically deep as well, a real feat of production - usually that kind of move comes off more like the sky and stars opening up but this is suddenly rushing, claustrophobic, simultaneously tinny and muffled submarine acoustics with pressure gauges off the meter and (literal) crush depth alarms ringing out of control. love as single-person bathysphere, and quite correctly so

love those funk guitar microlicks too, pure class

r|t|c, Monday, 13 May 2013 08:54 (ten years ago) link

i keep wanting to sing "baby, don't make me watch - if i can't ride it"

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Monday, 13 May 2013 09:23 (ten years ago) link

i keep expecting it to turn into bashmore's 'au seve'. is that... intentional...?

✌_✌ (c sharp major), Monday, 13 May 2013 10:09 (ten years ago) link

it's like they retroactively decided to write a song that au seve could have been sampled from.

✌_✌ (c sharp major), Monday, 13 May 2013 10:11 (ten years ago) link

Speaking of the drop in Baby, it's a neat trick how the chorus IS the breakdown...!? and the drop comes just AFTER the chorus is over? Maybe this is an old trick, but it's the first time I've noticed it.

haha, I've actually been thinking "how much of this seeming immense deepness is in due to a fact a poor quality rip?"

Tim F, Monday, 13 May 2013 10:47 (ten years ago) link

BTW maybe my biggest critical faux pas of 2012 was almost-instantly forgetting how massive and awesome and just brilliant and etc. Kidnap Kid's "Lazarys Taxon" was and is after briefly falling in love with it way back in the first part of the year.

What other mix has it been in? I feel like i've heard it many more times than just the four or so times I listened to it then.
