kind of sad when you can immediately tell where a shirts from by the catalog photo style ... need new hobby
― the late great, Saturday, 27 April 2013 15:46 (eleven years ago) link
tempted by that shirt. haven't made a lavish purchase for a while.
― ogmor, Saturday, 27 April 2013 16:29 (eleven years ago) link
that shirt rules
― flopson, Saturday, 27 April 2013 19:51 (eleven years ago) link
Don’t adjust your monitor, this is a real t-shirt from Tom & Hawk. Made on an interesting contraption known as the CMS knitting machine, not only is the pattern a head-turner in it’s own right, but if you stare long enough you can actually see a 3D image of the Pyramids of Giza.

i can't buy shit from oi pollo because of the exchange rate but love the site
― the late great, Saturday, 27 April 2013 19:54 (eleven years ago) link
the exchange rate is pretty good right now coming your way. it's just oi polloi sells expensive stuff.
― caek, Saturday, 27 April 2013 20:21 (eleven years ago) link
on some US brands they seem to convert prices directly from USD to GBP?
― the late great, Saturday, 27 April 2013 21:09 (eleven years ago) link
but then again i guess i don't pay VAT
― the late great, Saturday, 27 April 2013 21:11 (eleven years ago) link
neither do i, plus i usually wait for one of their free shipping promotions and/or a sale before ordering. exchange rate is also favourable for nzers right now.
agreed, most of the stuff they sell is expensive, but there are good deals every so often. with a VAT deduction, i don't think that t-shirt is particularly exorbitant. it certainly shouldn't be compared with prices for american apparel shirts or similar. i still prefer finding fun shirts in thrift stores tho, but they're not easy to find, especially ones that fit well and are in decent nick.

that is not a good shirt
― ְ֮֠֓֟֬֩ (gr8080), Friday, 3 May 2013 17:06 (eleven years ago) link
i've been trying to figure out if i like it or not
seems like an awkward place to put a stripe
― the late great, Friday, 3 May 2013 17:07 (eleven years ago) link
basically.
― ְ֮֠֓֟֬֩ (gr8080), Friday, 3 May 2013 17:08 (eleven years ago) link
masking tape?
― christmas candy bar (al leong), Friday, 3 May 2013 17:12 (eleven years ago) link
yeah that stripe is not going to have a slimming effect
― caek, Friday, 3 May 2013 17:43 (eleven years ago) link
it would look stupid even on a skinny guy
― ְ֮֠֓֟֬֩ (gr8080), Friday, 3 May 2013 17:53 (eleven years ago) link
that is true
― caek, Friday, 3 May 2013 18:01 (eleven years ago) link
idgi either
i can see it being of momentary interest when, say, a guy unbuttons his jacket and i see "hey! a stripe!" but my interest would quickly give way to confusion, then anger
― ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Friday, 3 May 2013 18:10 (eleven years ago) link
then violence

the thing is it's really really nice oxford cloth, the cut looks good
i just couldn't get my head entirely around the stripe
not sure it's quite as bad as you're all making it out to be
― the late great, Friday, 3 May 2013 18:13 (eleven years ago) link

the stripe shirt also just looks like a very boxy cut

i like a foxy boxy cut
― the late great, Friday, 3 May 2013 18:34 (eleven years ago) link
yeah v boxy. maybe a bit miserly on the collar too #oxford #shirt
― caek, Friday, 3 May 2013 18:52 (eleven years ago) link
the point of the stripe is to make us all uncomfortable
it takes a very bold asshole to buy & wear it

hmmmm well i have the asshole part down

my brother discouraged me from buying a shirt that was not dissimilar to that one yesterday, telling me that it was "too young" for me and that i "can't go backwards."

never too old / young
― the late great, Saturday, 18 May 2013 22:07 (ten years ago) link
i would say it is possible to be too old for kitsch (not that it's a great look for the young either), but the best fun shirts are p tasteful imo. like, think of funky old man sweaters
― flopson, Sunday, 19 May 2013 00:55 (ten years ago) link
i don't really find that shirt kitschy
― the late great, Sunday, 19 May 2013 01:48 (ten years ago) link
i don't either tbh. but it's bold/whimsical enough it wouldn't work with my personal aesthetic, i don't think. i think kitsch can work really well if people are committed to it.

I love the bubblegum colors
― the late great, Sunday, 19 May 2013 02:18 (ten years ago) link
i'm with gr80 on this one. there's something almost stifling about the azure background and overall predominance of blue. it doesn't contrast well with or enhance the more fun aspects of the shirt, which kind of looks like a mismatched assortment of tropical scout jamboree badges and resort information centre souvenirs. the adjacent pink and red parts are clashy and the assymmetry of the pattern is detrimental.
