Watching it now. The print is fucking pristine. Totally worth it.

Haven't watched the main feature yet, but have been through most of the extras. One thing I've taken away (and I don't know how I slept on this the first 20-30 times I've seen the movie) is that Olivia Barash (Leila from The United Fruitcake Outlet)was quite the little fox back then.

Leila: What about our relationship?

Otto: What?

Leila: Our relationship!

Otto: Fuck that!

Leila: You SHITHEAD! I'm glad I tortured you!

blu-ray is in my hot little hands as well; waiting to watch it though till I have a suitably sizable group to watch it with. First ever blu ray purchase too.

I feel like I should buy the Bluray, too, just in case I one day have a player.

bought a copy of this today on a whim, and because it was on sale for cheap. a cheap whim. it's beautiful. incredibly well designed on every level. such a great idea to style it in the manner of punk show flyers, photocopied fanzines and underground comics. makes it feel like a tribute to a cultural moment as much as, you know, dvd packaging.

three months pass...

I kinda loved Repo Chick. I mean, it's terrible on many levels, and in no way gets out of the original's shadow, but after you get past what it isn't, the film is an enjoyable romp. I got swept away and also liked the way Cox paid tribute to outmoded special f/x processes like miniatures/models and back-projections by utilizing them via modern yet still lo-fi techniques (digital green screen compositing). The movie is on the better end of the contemporary "midnight movie" school.

It also helps that I got my copy for $1.50. It's worth that much.

Like in '84, it looks great (Robby Muller) and is at its best when Stanton or Tracey Walter is monologuing, but not really much of a movie. Good soundtrack tho.

Know why I love this movie? Because it's so unassailably, unabashedly weird. It's nearly peerless in demeanor, tho Buckaroo Banzai sits at the same lunch table... And if it doesn't get auteured to death, Anderson's Inherent Vice adapt might sidle up shortly some year.

r. bean (soda), Thursday, 13 March 2014 17:59 (ten years ago) link

xp Where does The Human Tornado slot?

Eric H., Thursday, 13 March 2014 18:02 (ten years ago) link

yeah Buckaroo Banzai, another fitfully amusing '80s "nice try" at eccentricity.
