MAKR stuff is pretty good & well made & nicely designed but also just... kinda bland, imo? like why not use a color that's not a tasteful neutral, at all, ever

this is the backpack i have. i carry it around in a similar fashion except instead of being loosely held by the strap its usually slung across my back with both straps over my shoulders

i mostly only use that one in the summers though cuz i use my bike a lot more since its been so cold wet i carry my stuff around in my messenger bag

a friend of mine recently got this backpack, which i admired:

http://jonathanandolivia.com/images/GREG-BACKPACK-RED-4303P.jpg

i am kinda surprised by how many thoughts i have about backpacks, which always seemed like the overnight bag's younger, less glamorous brother but maybe backpacks are kinda stylish. its just that its a lot harder to be cool when you're wearing one i guess unlike that suede overnight bag you casually tossed into the backseat of your convertible or w/e

i like the idea of describing backpacks in terms of how many liters they hold, that is really something. alternate idea though: how many exterior zippers they have e.g. this guy well hes a regular daypack, you know like seven zippers. but this guy i just use for hiking remote trails in the mountains of lost zembla and its got like thirty-three of 'em so cool

I've got a vaguely ugly orange LL Bean backpack from some time in the early 2000s and I love it - perfect size, chest strap, built in camelback slot, long enough for my giant torso, and the thing just won't die. I haul my laptop, pyrex lunch container, and various books, electronic components, tools or hardware, gym clothes, and all sorts of shit on a daily basis on foot or by motorcycle and can't imagine using anything else. I actually fear the day that it wears out as I'll be sad trying to find a replacement. No laptop holder but I have a padded Chrome case that works just fine inside it.

I don't care how tacky it might look or how unhip it is - it works, fits under airline seats, and holds everything I need comfortably.

joygoat, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 17:08 (eleven years ago) link

well i settled on the domke shoulder one, and i just bought a lowepro backpack for medium format stuff xp

jansport still makes this bag:

I have this which is alright but in a world of zips and buttons the buckles seem like a bit of an unnecessary inconvenience. Was thinking about getting one of the simpler Fjallraven ones having liked them when seeing them around, but shit they're disproportionately expensive, when I replace this I'll probably go for some £10 polyester piece o crap.

the kind of man who best draws girls' eyeballs (Merdeyeux), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 14:51 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, i have a leather briefcase that buckles and they can be a huge hassle if you need to get something quickly

on the other hand buckles will probably be functional forever while zippers break are prone to all sorts of problems

this is my backpack. i wear it p often & i think it's nice enough, looks good when it's not too stuffed. and it cost like 15$. my shoulders were aching last summer from wearing it while biking with my laptop inside so i started leaving my laptop at work/school and started using a tote bag. nowadays i alternate between the two

I love my backpack! It's comfortable to walk in for hours (traveling, urban mobility, walking, etc) and can fit a weekend's worth of stuff. No shame in my backpack. It looks like this only it doesn't say STAGE DIVING on it

I've been thinking about backpacks and this citibike initiative that NY is about to start, because the ability to grab a bike and ride it someplace in large part depends on how you are carrying yr stuff.

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 16:43 (eleven years ago) link

i thought about buying a navy one from APC last fall but hesitated because really, do i need a $200 backpack.. surely if I have to have one i can find something in navy with no logos for less than that. i only considered carrying one for taking long walks in the city - with a shoulder bag or tote bag, I can't carry much more than a book, wallet, and phone in it or my back starts to hurt.

monogrammed ll beans were absolutely de rigeur at prep school, sometimes slung hobo-style from the end of a lacrosse or field hockey stick, sometimes embellished with flowers & big loopy handwriting in white-out pen

yeah, they were at my school & you couldn't have the exact same ll bean bag as anyone else in your class & it was necessary to write on it and you absolutely had to wear it hanging off one shoulder. they used to make these dark color, simple ones with brown leather on the bottom and they were really nice, i had one of those.. it was a pricey thing for my parents to buy, i'm sure they weren't happy when it got scuffed up/written on deliberately because that was the trend.

I use a strap back for work (no laptop required) but a Jansport two-shoulder thing when I bike to the coffee shop on weekends.

yeah, they were at my school & you couldn't have the exact same ll bean bag as anyone else in your class & it was necessary to write on it and you absolutely had to wear it hanging off one shoulder.

At my school all the cool kids had army surplus backpacks and drew flowers and gothy pictures and band logos on them. I demanded one of these bags and then doubted my artistic talent or my ability to pick sufficiently hip bands and never wrote on it, and also had it long after the cool kids stopped having them (in fact my turning up in one may have been the signal all the cool kids needed to stop wearing them), thus singling me out as a nerd, though not as much as the day my can of Fanta burst and my backpack dripped all the way into school before I noticed

I observed the one-shoulder rule at the time, since both shoulders was definitely for uncool kids and tourists, but these days I'm not exactly going to be mistaken for a cool kid so I may as well have it where it's actually comfortable for walking. For all I know Cool Kid Backpack Etiquette has probably changed since my youth anyway.

susuwatari teenage riot (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 18 April 2013 13:53 (eleven years ago) link

i also adhered to uk one-shoulder cool rule but i think two shoulders kinda developed into an semi-ironic reference as teen americana pop culture proliferated via internet wallowing

pretty amazed that record bags havent made a comeback (afaict) while bomber jackets, kickers, naf naf &c have all been and gone again

hell yeah, Technics bag trend another one I was late to, still know where that one is so please revive now (think the zip broke though)

felt ~prepared for anything~ shoving a variety of cheap imitation swiss army knives, cheap imitation maglites, cheap lighters, etc, into the 6000 tiny pockets, none of which ever got used

My Eastpak backpack was the only cool thing I had going for me at school.

These days I still have an Ugly Backpack why because convenience. It keeps out the rain, I can easily carry my computer/lunch/shopping/paperwork, it's fine for cycling. It looks something like this (I think I have an older version):
