Is it only me, or was it a brilliant decision to make Rowetta lead singer of his band? She has a fucking great voice - and I'm really glad to see her get her just deserts as a lead singer after all these years.

Is it only me, or ban everybody?

My comment was perhaps drunkenly over-enthusiastic, I admit (it's 2.30 pm), but she is good nonetheless.

Rowetta has a much better voice than Ian Curtis.

five years pass...

So he & his backing band The Light continue with the two Substance compilations. Interesting interview where he is kind of sad that the relation to the other New Order members - esp. to Sumner, I guess - is so totally in shambles. I quite like the arrangements and the sound of the new interpretations of the 4 songs on the site. Even Love will tear us apart which I never wanted to hear again somehow still gets me here.

Yeah those are... surprisingly powerful. Those songs carry some weight even in other hands.

Fuck Peter Hook. He did this to himself.

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 17 June 2018 15:54 (five years ago) link

It can be sad when people do things to themselves.

I was keen to see the Substance tour, especially now that the backing band is basically Monaco, so Potts can presumably do the most Bernard-y vocal parts, but nobody else had the slightest interest

I refuse to support him after the horrible shit he said about Gillian. He degraded her and showed what an egotistical asshole he really is.

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 17 June 2018 17:08 (five years ago) link

What was that?

eleven months pass...

touring Technique & Republic starting in September, with opening Joy Division set: https://peterhookandthelight.live/

That's just weird, though the choice of Republic is intriguing. Didn't Stephen Hague famously nix a lot of his bass playing on that one?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 19 May 2019 13:50 (four years ago) link

well he's just about out of albums now, I suppose he'll be touring Revenge's One True Passion before cover his own Peter Hook and the Light's covers of Unknown Pleasures again.

akm, Sunday, 19 May 2019 15:08 (four years ago) link

There's the Monaco albums too!

michaellambert, Sunday, 19 May 2019 17:13 (four years ago) link

He should try his hand at Music Complete!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Sunday, 19 May 2019 17:15 (four years ago) link

Just go ahead and cover the Electronic albums.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 19 May 2019 17:22 (four years ago) link

Those last two suggestions would be wonderful trolling!

three years pass...

I saw the latest tour last night. He is touring Unknown Pleasures and Closer bookended by various JD/NO tracks (last night, we got "ICB," "Dreams Never End," "Leave Me Alone," "Regret," "Crystal" and "True Faith" to start, and for an encore got "Warsaw," "Ceremony," "Transmission" and, of course, "Love Will Tear Us Apart"). It was a much, much better show than I expected, and also surprisingly emotional for me--I suppose some of it had to do with the fact that it had been 37 year to the day since I first saw New Order. The band is very tight, and his singing is much stronger than I would have given him credit for.

Still boycotting Peter Hook since his horrible comments about Gillian and the way he acted towards the band when he left. He's a complete asshole who's essentially a casino act at this point living off two albums he was a part of 40 years ago. At least he isn't as bad as Morrissey (that we know of).

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 23:06 (one year ago) link

Other evidence for the prosecution:

a) faking Ian Curtis's signature on JD memorabilia
b) claiming Caroline Aherne abused *him* 20 years plus after their divorce, and, therefore...
c) failing to pay tribute to Aherne when she died
d) DJing from a Mixmag cd

I saw the tour earlier in the year (in Metz, France). Like jimbeaux, I was pleasantly surprised by the band, but I disagree about Hooky's voice - he's no singer, really. I see the charge sheet set out above, and there's no denying it's a karaoke/tribute act, but I can't help it, I enjoyed it.

giraffe, Thursday, 18 August 2022 11:58 (one year ago) link

He's a complete asshole

Has that ever been in doubt? Both he and Sumner are pretty notorious douchebags. Hooky used to thrive on that image.

giraffe, I'm not saying he's a great singer, but since I had essentially zero expectations, I was pleasantly surprised.

two weeks pass...

Saw him last night, impressed they still managed to burn through both JD albums + a 3-song encore even with a rain delay of like 45 minutes after the initial New Order set.
