Highly approve of navy dresses in general, those necklines in general, and that one in particular, especially on you in the WDYLL thread.

ljubljana, Sunday, 14 April 2013 02:52 (eleven years ago) link

Thanks :) I've never liked navy - always associated it with school uniforms I guess, idk

No, it's gorgeous! And yellow shoes will be a++.

I like the colors. tbrr it looks like it needs a good dose of Static Guard. I'd spend all day trying to tug it into submission.

also unsuited/cannot afford

I hate shopping for formal events! the only dresses i want are drapey asymmetrical things and yet I don't want to be the only one wearing something weird

seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Sunday, 14 April 2013 21:17 (eleven years ago) link

but if that's your style, no reason not to?

I love that one, it's gorgeous

i think i have some unresolved issues about places and events where it feels like the expectation is to dress/act in a really feminine sort of way, if that makes sense

like a wedding where the bride has a white dress and the wedding party is all matchy and the women who are guests all show up in cute kate spade looking things and i could totally show up in a kate spade looking thing & on me it would look ironic.

i just have a lot of ambivalence about traditional gender roles and formal events and institutions

I was recently inspired to dig out some moldy oldie classics when I realized that it's sort of ok to wear dresses with holes in them, right? I mean, within reason?

That might depend on whether you're Nick Cave's date, though?

That is pretty rad, I can think of a couple of sewing/crafty solutions to holes in lace.

1. Cut around the hole to the nearest lace shape/boundary so it looks purposeful.
2. Potentially back the hole with a satin or other fabric possibly in a contrast color or print.

I like #2

ljubljana, Monday, 15 April 2013 15:16 (eleven years ago) link

Ironically in my case I really really LIKE Kate Spade-looking things, I am not an experimental dresser. I offset that with too much eyeliner and a perpetual cigarette, none of which is exactly revolutionary. The Kenzo dress is wonderful.

Daria, why don't you confound expectations and wear cream cigarette pants and some kind of draped top? If I had the legs for them I would wear cigarette pants all of the times.

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Monday, 15 April 2013 15:21 (eleven years ago) link

xp - that's what i mean

i have this blue toile dress i found in a pile of discarded old clothes outside (what i assume to be a lady's) house while i was walking my dog (lol 25 year old me)
and i used to wear it all the time, but i started to get worried that it looked dumpy, so i stopped and put it into the archives
but now i'm thinking of bringing it back because i think i can fix it up a little

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Monday, 15 April 2013 15:22 (eleven years ago) link

Oh pretty! Yeah, I never really thought of it before for myself but the redefining of the nature of the item is v interesting.

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Monday, 15 April 2013 15:26 (eleven years ago) link

In my dream life I would have little pipe-cleaners for legs and therefore be able to rock silk shantung cigarette pants in a whole range of violently pastel colors like salmon-pink.

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Monday, 15 April 2013 15:30 (eleven years ago) link

i do wear cigarette pants, i am actually wearing them today, but any cream/white/pale colored trousers on me is not a good look, i think - balance wise it should be lighter tops - and i'd be very very likely to spill something on them immediately! i would feel awkward in pink ones unless the fit was impeccable and it's way easier to find a dress that fits me

but the biggest issue is that i would get something on them immediately. i have one pair of lightish taupe work trousers for summer and the same year i bought them i'd gotten some permanent splash of dirt near one hem from walking in the city on a rainy day :(

seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Monday, 15 April 2013 15:55 (eleven years ago) link

I love toile. I love blue toile. I would do whatever it takes to make that dress work. Also:

cream cigarette pants and some kind of draped top

In the early '00s I was working for a software company (lol who wasn't?) in Atlanta and they had a Christmas party and most everybody had one some version of office Christmas party formal wear and a colleague brought a date and she was wearing cigarette pants and high heels and I don't even remember exactly what kind of shirt and she looked SO AMAZING and cool and badass and just wow. When nobody else was dancing, she jumped right out on the floor and danced with her date and they seemed to be having so much fun while the rest of us were there in our staid office party outfits* wishing that we had the guts to take such a risk. I will seriously never forget her and I hope that she has had every success in life, because she deserved it.

So, in short, yes to that suggestion.

*tbf I was wearing a long gold wood nymph dress and Fleuvog Frankenstein boots so I didn't exactly look traditional; she just made me feel staid with her convention flouting and joie de vivre.

carl agatha, Monday, 15 April 2013 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

So jel. I want cigarette pants in every color, especially in black lace with a taupe/peach background--hey, that would be a good look for hiding stains. I love pants and what they say, how they're subversive on women in the most basic sense and how they break the rules of what constitutes different levels of dressing. It's just that the infinite variety of ways in which they do not fit AT ALL is torturous.

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Monday, 15 April 2013 16:05 (eleven years ago) link

God yes. It is a tragedy.

carl agatha, Monday, 15 April 2013 16:06 (eleven years ago) link

Ha! At a recent family function two different people told me that I looked like I should be fencing, and I totally took that as a compliment. I thought I was kind of going for Prince/Kinks, but I'll take "jouster." I love dressing up like a frilly little man!

Also Carl my toile dress is blue. You are gonna pee when you see it, but I have to make sure it doesn't smell/hasn't completely disintegrated in the time I haven't been wearing it.

I can only wear stretchy pants these days for comfort reasons, but fortunately there are a lot of those out there.

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Monday, 15 April 2013 17:20 (eleven years ago) link

So I noticed on those eshakti dresses I bought that there were funny little button tabs underneath the shoulder straps and I just couldn't figure out what they were. I finally asked Ytth what he thought they were: ”uhhh aren't those for holding your bra straps in place?”

DUH

I love that dress, VG - I think that sort of ruching thing is good if you feel self conscious about lumps and bumps. Also thirding yellow shoes with it.

Hey Carl A!

Could you tell me the name of the website you have had success buying plus sized dresses from before? I think it's the one with the model you love. A friend of mine was talking about how awful a lot of plus size women's clothing is and I told her I'd try to find out the name of that site. :)

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 15:13 (eleven years ago) link

Asos Curve and Simply Be feature my girlfriend. I think the quality as Asos Curve is better than that at Simply Be, but SB has cute trendy stuff.

I also buy a lot of dresses at eShakti.

TY! :)

i have a friend who says she counted and she owned 80 dresses. right after counting she found one that had fallen behind the hamper, bringing the total to 81. each one has a name. the one that had fallen down behind the hamper was called "the unicorn dress," though it does not feature a unicorn.

imagining what it would be like to own over 80 dresses

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 22:08 (eleven years ago) link

That was me in my 20's and 134 pairs of shoes was a downsize. I don't know if it was 81 dresses but I had more than 56. Contempo, Foleys and vintage, 50 cents per pound, found the on the floor in old warehouse finds from high school.

I think I have at least 40, but most aren't very good. Got another yesterday! Fit and flare style.cream lace with lime lining. Not v flattering for my pink skin tone, but so cute! And cheap (marshal's)

I bought a petticoat today. It's the best. It has a New York City Opera label in it!

A dress I got in a buy one/get one free deal a month ago got it's first wash today and was ruined. The dress was cheap, liked it a lot though. The dye went all splotchy on it. Followed directions. Trashed it which leaves me with three sundresses, 2 "nice dresses" and one fading red linen dress. Time for more dresses.

*tera, Monday, 6 May 2013 02:38 (ten years ago) link

Ooo red linen. I still cling to my canary yellow linen shirtdress though I will probably never fit into it again.

emilys., Tuesday, 7 May 2013 05:02 (ten years ago) link

That sounds pretty, so don't!

*tera, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 07:05 (ten years ago) link

I know its not dresses but ive been on the hunt for the perfect, or really a number of perfect, mid length A-line skirts. I found an Issac Mizrahi floral number that that looked pretty good in the photo. As I do, I skimmed the the best and worst comments. Only one wonman gave the skirt a 1 star rating. The reason? 'Its made of some type of weird rubber-like material I've never come across before. I had to return it!'. Rubber?? I though. I went back to check the what the fabric was in the description - 97% Cotton, 3% Spandex. People are crazy.'
