this mediocre vocal performance really propels this mediocre uk house track to new heights of mediocrity

the skream mix is quite awful

the late great, Monday, 8 April 2013 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah I'm not mad keen on this either, certainly in comparison to White Noise which really deserved to be #1.

Do Gorgon City fit in somewhere here as well? That tune has been getting mad 1xtra play lately.

Matt DC, Monday, 8 April 2013 19:49 (eleven years ago) link

and it's not that i have anything against garage revival x 90s house revival, i just don't see what's so great about this song

the late great, Monday, 8 April 2013 19:50 (eleven years ago) link

compared to au seve or street walker or whatever

yeah, kind of - 'need u' was cowritten by mnek, who along with gorgon city is part of rudimental's black butter stable. black butter have near enough singlehandedly (albeit strongly enabled by mistajam and then radio 1's decisive support and playlisting) created/curated a sort of new uk dance pop interzone where songful tunes touch on various amorphous dance flavours (garage, to brostep, to dnb, to trap, to boogie, to just cute blippy stuff, to whatever etc) without ever placing them too strongly in discouragingly specific context; sort of a 86-93 chart spirit with modern tools. it doesn't really lend itself to shorthand but the more you listen the more you get it - there's lots around, and it feels to me like a very mini golden period right now.

r|t|c, Monday, 8 April 2013 20:20 (eleven years ago) link

I really like this Krystal Klear & Jenna G one that r|t|c referred to on the Jessie Ware thread:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vpDHSxE_gU

boxedjoy, Monday, 8 April 2013 21:20 (eleven years ago) link

xp, aye Black Butter's turned out to be a really nice label. Must admit I was a bit underwhelmed when they first came out after being a big fan of Rudimental's funky stuff, but they've grown on me. Gorgon City, Lulu James, Kidnap kid etc have all done lovely stuff and I think Woz in particular is awesome (though he's more harder edged than the aforementioned).

anyway chuffed to see need u at number one, kinda makes me wish something like this had happened for funky a few years back but hey-ho...

Benny B, Monday, 8 April 2013 21:34 (eleven years ago) link

That Krystal Klear/Jenna G thing is even better than need u. Be interesting if this stuff manages to catch any of the surf from the forthcoming Daft Punk Disco Leviathan

this one's a good literalisation of how this thread's specific concerns come out of the wider vibe

r|t|c, Monday, 8 April 2013 22:30 (eleven years ago) link

I have been playing zero attention to Black Butter while separately enjoying Kidnap Kid, Lulu James and Gorgon City (plus Rudimental obviously) so for there to be some kind of gravitational centre to all this makes me happy.

Was last year's Tensnake/Syron track a hamfisted pitch to this territory as well or just a coincidence.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 12:25 (eleven years ago) link

'ONE HUNDREET' - track would be slightly less pants if she could pronounce the word correctly

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 12:40 (eleven years ago) link

xp depends on your attitude to coincidence really, heh. syron is signed to black butter too (maybe this is what you meant already) but otherwise not a direct pitch i'd have thought

"some kind of gravitational centre" is definitely the way to be looking at it rather than territory though yeah

r|t|c, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:20 (eleven years ago) link

all of these tracks are nice but katy b is just gonna wipe the floor once her new stuff comes out, right

monotony, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:44 (eleven years ago) link

it's certainly the most amenable climate there's been for her to return to. could do really well if she gets it right

r|t|c, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:59 (eleven years ago) link

That Devolution track is great - I listened to the second Black Butter comp on the way home yesterday and 'If You Believe' and 'Listen To The Badman' are also straight up bangers.

In all honesty I like most of the stuff mentioned on this thread more than Need U.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 10:04 (eleven years ago) link

South Soul Project stuff also sounded great.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 10:05 (eleven years ago) link

is there a catchy genre title for all this stuff? seems like a more hooky spin on deep house

NI, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 14:16 (eleven years ago) link

i like the duke dumont like okay, it's fine - weirdly this is ny type stuff but reminds me of the same sort of sound, but it's better.

that Skream Rudimental remix is so good, I had gathered that he'd been stepping things up recently but had no idea he'd gone in this direction.

This is what I get for taking my eye off the ball but I had a mad Black Butter binge over the last couple of days and I love this record's entire aesthetic. "86-93 chart spirit but with modern tools" is very OTM.

Is there enough going around in this vein to merit a rolling UK pop-house thread?

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 April 2013 11:30 (eleven years ago) link

i sort of intended this to encompass all that, maybe the title can be edited to that end

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Thursday, 11 April 2013 11:31 (eleven years ago) link

"... love this LABEL's entire aesthetic", even.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 April 2013 11:32 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah that's the track that provided the penny-dropping moment for me. This Lulu James track is good as well:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVtuluGSG7Y

I suppose we're at the tipping point that I naively thought funky would bring around in 2008*, the final return of a decent chart-friendly vocal house music that feels UK rather than euro in its approach. Like a lot of this stuff has the same modern DNA as the UKG interszone but takes it in a different direction.

*I suppose it did in a way, but via a very roundabout route.

The "Bass Drop Mix" of "Listen to the Badman" in particular is (((((|O_O|)))))

No way is this better than the original version with its ridiculous rave chords and disembodied diva vocals.

Matt DC, Monday, 22 April 2013 09:27 (ten years ago) link

xp yeah, absolutely. as an actual chart thing it is just such a non sequitur that it's impossible not be disarmed, and then from that there's a frisson that comes from having your nose tweaked aesthetically

like i mean if you heard it and felt proven right, about life and stuff, then ur totally a disgusting savage. (ie i must get round to the grim task of seeing what popjustice think)

r|t|c, Monday, 22 April 2013 09:47 (ten years ago) link

i guess it's just the difference between being playful and being the one note wacky tie office joker

same vibe that couches the central conceit of 'spoons' (ie, literally the spoons) as lightly punning kitchen sink melodrama moreso than pure gimmick

'spoons' kinda reminded me of something steve beresford might have done actually, like 'my body' by general strike or whatever

haha the first few times i heard "spoons" i just assumed the title was referring to, like, lovers in bed. then i actually listened closely and was like ohhhhh. when i talked to them i mentioned the first interpretation and one of them said it had never occurred to him and another was like, i thought that was the point.

absolutely love "waiting all night" and "baby" - the rudimental album is strong too on one listen

mike t-diva, Saturday, 10 October 2015 10:35 (eight years ago) link

I have no interest in hearing either but I assume Rudimental have been trawling it around the festival set like a military campaign.

The first Disclosure and Rudimental albums felt perfectly timed, they both hit at the crest of a wave, a moment that's gone now. What I've heard from both suggests that they get less and less enjoyable the more they try and broaden their appeal.

A post to note that A*M*E of "Need U" repute is now making music under the name KABBA and has released her first EP: https://open.spotify.com/album/3gzZEIjvV8djfkYG1z4Pk8

She's called Duke Dumont out for his fuckery so don't expect that team up to happen again:

. @DukeDumont do me a favour and keep my name out of your mouth please. I saw the Music Week write up, you sir are a liar and you’re disrespectful. 2013 was a long time ago my guy, let it fucking go! You didn’t even get my name right!

— KABBA (@kabbaofficial) December 20, 2019

.@DukeDumont I was not enthused to write to your loop but I asked my friend to write the song with me and together we scored you your only number 1 record and a Grammy nomination. Instead of thanking us you’ve been nothing but shady & rude all these years.

— KABBA (@kabbaofficial) December 20, 2019

.@DukeDumont I could go on and on but I’ve been nothing but respectful and sweet to you (as I try to be with everyone) why you felt you needed to be so shady and blatantly rude baffles my spirit. Give it a rest & enjoy the PRS. Happy holidays!
