some people like square shells but no matter how many times i return to it, i think it's the one release of his that i DON'T like! it sounds really bland and rounded off

pure pain is an early highlight for me

Funny you say that cause by elimination, the only tracks I don't get(yet?) Are Shame Chamber and Pure Pain. The others are all great, maybe Girl Called Alex is somewhat the highlight of the all highlights .
― nostormo, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 23:46 (eleven years ago) link
shame chamber was the one that jumped out at me. rest of the record kind of washed over me without making an impact.
― mizzell, Thursday, 4 April 2013 14:17 (eleven years ago) link
it's a grower. the melodies are kinda buried under the production. but they are there.
― nostormo, Thursday, 4 April 2013 14:43 (eleven years ago) link
this album is good, but so far it lacks the distinct feeling halo had. that one was like a defining statement of burned out alienation, this one is just a collection of good tunes... so could be worse.

― nostormo, Thursday, 4 April 2013 14:48 (eleven years ago) link
compared to smoke ring for my halo, yeah. i've never heard the feelings he captured on that album expressed so well.
― Spectrum, Thursday, 4 April 2013 15:00 (eleven years ago) link
well, i agree that he is at his best with the sad songs. i'd say Halo might had stronger songs, but more fillers as well. (though there is a Halo sort of tune here as well: Girl Called Alex). The new one is much more consistent ( a problem he had with all of his records till now).
i have a problem with the half baked production Halo had on some of the songs as well. as i said, it's more accessible, but what the hell.

Square Shells is so good. I rate Halo higher but Ocean City is a great track.
liking this record a lot. along with the two early release tracks (Pretty Day and Never Run Away) I'm most into Too Hard and Girl Called Alex. (which is my daughter's name so I was glad nothing bad happened to Alex in the song)

Some of the tracks seemed a bit bland on first listen honestly- it is a grower, right? Don't think I've had a close enough listen either. I had been excited about it especially due to that first track.
― Evan, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:33 (eleven years ago) link
it is a grower if there ever was one, though i have to say i liked the record from the start. now i like it even more.
about Alex= she will be married happily to Marc, so you're safe, dmr.
i think Alex, and Was All Talk are the best songs here, though really, it's all kinda great.
― nostormo, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:40 (eleven years ago) link
definitely a grower.. after the first couple of listens i was kinda bummed that i didn't like the record that much and then after a few more listens i started noticing more and more bits and pieces of songs that i REALLY liked until i basically decided that i loved the album
― diamonddave85, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:43 (eleven years ago) link
otm.and also, after you decipher the lyrics, you realize it is ,after all, a very personal and emotional record, as much as Halo was.nice pfrk review, too.

I've heard so much good about this record, particularly all the drumwork from Stella Mozgawa. The only song I've heard is the title track though. It hasn't really caught my ear, even though I've put it on three or four times.
― how's life, Thursday, 11 April 2013 15:14 (eleven years ago) link
I know some of these songs were supposed to be long but the version I have has some even longer versions of these songs. Has anyone else heard this and can compare the two?

― your holiness, we have an official energy drink (Z S), Thursday, 11 April 2013 15:17 (eleven years ago) link
only listened to this once while making dinner last night, but it sounded great...were my ears deceiving me or was one tune a heavy "boys of summer" homage?
― tylerw, Thursday, 11 April 2013 15:19 (eleven years ago) link
i'm guessing you have the glitchy 192kbps promo leak from matador which some have speculated is a 320 rip that somehow reports that it is 192. mp3 players base their length estimate on filesize so that would probably account for the longer reported track lengths
― diamonddave85, Thursday, 11 April 2013 15:21 (eleven years ago) link
You are correct. I listened to the opening track from the start and it just cuts off at its intended length. Kind of weird, thanks.
― slagterm, Thursday, 11 April 2013 15:36 (eleven years ago) link
dang, i was kinda hoping there was a chopped and screwed version floating around out there

great album - after 'Halo', I thought this was the kind of artist from whom one album was enough but I've been proved wrong. Great sunny highway driving music too. Surprised no one has mentionned 'Stoned & Dethroned' as a reference.

Got this on vinyl the other day. Absolute perfection. Less of a...'vibe' to it than Smoke Ring had/has, but the songs are incredible. I could listen to Goldtone all day.
