It's way better that it (apparently) came out of nowhere. Hate formulaic foreshadowing and as everyone has said, shit from your past can just resurface.

in my world of tangentially known young ppl, i was talking to my friend's younger sister, shes maybe like 23, & apparently all her friends hated this ep, she loved it

Gawker article calls Girls "increasingly sallow", which is either an unfortunate typo or weirdly specific, hilarious complaint
― relentless technosexuality (DJP), Thursday, 4 April 2013 14:53 (eleven years ago) link
haha, maybe its a typo. people use that for, like, colorless and boring, maybe

someone pointed that out in the comments complete with screenshots, which made me think it wasn't actually a typo

'Girls' Star Christopher Abbot Departs Series, Reportedly After Fights With Lena Dunham
After appearing in the first two seasons as Allison Williams' on-again, off-again boyfriend Charlie, the actor has left due to creative differences.
Christopher Abbott has left HBO's Golden Globe-winning comedy, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Abbot appeared in 12 episodes of the show's first two seasons, playing Charlie, the once-and-again boyfriend of series regular Allison Williams. The pair had reunited in the finale, but their relationship couldn't survive off-camera drama.
"Chris is grateful for the experience of collaborating with Lena Dunham, Judd Apatow and the entire Girls cast and crew, but right now he’s working on numerous other projects and has decided not to return to the show," reps for Abbott told THR.
Abbott has a budding film career, which includes last fall's indie favorite Hello I Must Be Going, in which he starred opposite Melanie Lynskey; the SXSW film Burma; and the upcoming drama The Sleepwalker, which co-stars Brady Corbet.
The New York Post, which first broke the news, reports that Abbott's exit came after butting heads with series creator and star Dunham. HBO declined comment.

charlie was a good character, i felt. i think they should have the cast alternate what roles they play... so like, one episode the guy who usually plays adam plays marnie, and zosia mamet plays jessa, etc, and then see how peoples' emotional attachments are affected, like if they are more attached to the characters or the actors, and if they can separate the two. it would make television history, and it would be an interesting thing for lena dunham to discuss in the after-show interviews. maybe christopher abbott would agree to come back if he was allowed to play hannah's dad.

n.b. i've always wanted to have a show where that happened. are there any pretexts for a similar idea, in the world of experimental film or something?
