is this for real? something very "a modest proposal" about this.

mister borges (darraghmac), Saturday, 23 March 2013 19:23 (eleven years ago) link

feels weird that a brony would qualify his particular strain of bronyhood in relation to another kind of bronyhood as being too strange to grok instead of just saying, "hey now buddy, that's my fiancee there, back off" or some such.

like are ponyography aficionados and pony plushies disparate communities that don't interact or know of each others' ways?

slugbuggy, Saturday, 23 March 2013 19:43 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe a standard issue brony still thinks marrying a plush toy as a means of asserting copyright is just a step too far

mister borges (darraghmac), Saturday, 23 March 2013 19:45 (eleven years ago) link

probably the most concise summation of the situation but also the weirdest sentence i've ever said that about.

Fandom rules dictate that girls CAN be called bronies, but the more correct term is 'pegasis'.

emil.y, Sunday, 24 March 2013 16:42 (eleven years ago) link

I was explaining this very thing to someone irl recently, and it dawned on me quite how much I waste my life.

emil.y, Sunday, 24 March 2013 16:43 (eleven years ago) link

wasn't there a bronycon orgy last year that had all sorts of lurid details on twitter

Brother-in-law sent me a video of a bronie sodomising himself with a giant custom-made plushie rocking horse thing the other day. Thought that was the peak of this crazy-assed cult, but that email up above beats it.

Why would someone announce they are a brony? Whatever happened to dignity?

mister borges (darraghmac), Monday, 25 March 2013 16:14 (eleven years ago) link

I think one of the answers to "Whatever happened to dignity?" is "bronies"

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 25 March 2013 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

He's really sweet and goofy, very earnest. We were talking about gender roles and what "girls/boys should like/wear/do" and he made his announcement. That was it. I didn't find it undignified at all tbh. I only wished anyone aside from me knew what he had said. He has a tshirt and everything. It hasn't come up again, though.

I don't mean to take my boggling at stuff like the letter posted in here out on your student, he doesn't deserve that

OTOH I'm still boggling like a mug

Grown male friend of mine who likes Friendship Is Magic will only look at Equestria Daily on his ipad on 3G, because he doesn't want it to show up on logs at work

Brony con 2013

Brian Eno's Mother (Latham Green), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 10:45 (eleven years ago) link

Props and Cosplay Policy
We love to see our attendees dress up in all sorts of creative and interesting costumes! However, for safety's sake, we have some rules about what costumes and props are acceptable at BronyCon. When planning your costume, please keep the following rules in mind:

  • Decency and Appropriateness: Congoer attire must cover all areas normally covered by a swimsuit. Costumes and props must also be PG-rated. Hate speech is not permitted on attire or props in any language.
  • Costume Safety: Costumes must not be dangerous to anyone who bumps into them accidentally.
  • Volume: Costumes and props that make noise must have volume controls and should be kept at an appropriate volume. The owners of such props and costumes must turn down or mute the volume when asked to by Security.
  • Live Steel: Live steel props are any props crafted from metal with a pointed end or blade-like edge, whether blunt or sharp. All such objects are strictly prohibited in convention spaces. This rule does not apply to objects with only the appearance of metal, such as wooden swords wrapped in aluminum foil.
  • Weapons: Real weapons such as maces, axes, or batons must be tightly peacebound or otherwise disabled, and are not allowed if they cannot be disabled. Projectile weapons such as bows, slings, or crossbows must be disabled and unloaded. Bows must be unstrung or strung with a flimsy and loose material such as twine. No bolts or arrows may be carried as part of a costume unless they are fake, not fireable, and not sharp or dangerous.
  • Gun-like Props: Gun-like props are required to have orange tips. Airsoft guns must never be loaded and must be disabled, and no ammunition may be carried on the congoer carrying the airsoft.
  • Guns: Real firearms, even if disabled or unloaded are strictly prohibited in all convention spaces. If you are an off-duty law enforcement officer carrying your sidearm through convention space, please come see the Head of Security when you enter the con so there are no unfortunate misunderstandings.
  • Any prop being used in an unsafe or threatening manner may be confiscated by Security. Security may ask you at any time to put a prop away or change out of a costume based on its acceptability.
  • The Head of Security has the final say as to the acceptability of any prop or costume.

No, not sinister (Austerity Ponies), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 16:58 (eleven years ago) link

I'm imagining "tightly peacebound" also appears in brony fanfic quite often.

I feel like those rules are also good rules of thumb for life in general.

South of Hamster (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 17:23 (eleven years ago) link

those rules are actually basically standard cosplay rules

I am trying to decide if it is funny or terrifying that "don't bring live, dangerous weapons" comes AFTER "don't put hate speech on your costume"

Darth Icky (DJP), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 17:38 (eleven years ago) link

"peace-bonding" for instance derives from old-line sci fi cons, here's a citation from 1987

my god i only have 2 useless beyblade (silby), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 17:40 (eleven years ago) link

oh jesus christ i feel so bad for the security guys having to work this. fuck. what must they think.

Jamie_ATP, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 17:51 (eleven years ago) link

most of the security staff are probably thinking "I never thought I would see so many men in pastel pony costumes at once", with one person thinking "this takes me back..."

Darth Icky (DJP), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 17:54 (eleven years ago) link

I'm just glad bronycon exists to make anime, comic, and gaming cons seem safe, sane, and mainstream by comparison

xp lol

i like bronies because we all get to be that guy, at least for a moment

Spectrum, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 17:59 (eleven years ago) link

Have we finally figured out what Bronies are yet? Are they like doofus steampunkers or are they some sort of new and weird self-selecting band of misogynistic ultraconservatives who sooth their cognitive dissonance with cartoon pony fluff.

And how closely connected is it to Furries? Seems pretty close... A lot closer than like, adult tabletop gamers who I've found mostly to be into the tactical/warfare "I am a military genius! you are now overwhelmed by my chaos marines bwahaahaa!" aspect of those games. Or comic book collectors who are equally addicted to male "soap operas" like Dexter and stuff and also collect DVD sets.

I mean they're just chibi horses. How has that developed into a whole "thing"?
