Hm, listening now, Black Parade does seem to hold up a little better as an album than Cheers.

I really liked My Chemical Romance. Sad to see them go. They were one of the ultimate if I had have been 14 or 15 when they came out I would have loved them.

otm I always felt this way about them as well.

Three Cheers is the only album of theirs I own - really fun record. also, "Helena" and "I'm Not OK" are two of my favourite videos of the 00s.

Roz, Saturday, 23 March 2013 18:20 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, the videos got me interested at first. They had a good sense of humour about the emo pomp.

mostly hyped about this because it gives gerard way more free time to work on his amazing comics

fauxmarc, Saturday, 23 March 2013 19:25 (eleven years ago) link

ok .. i keep reading re the comics ..
are these proper dc/marvel etc comics ?
i.e. i know nothing, so someone please point me in the necessary direction ...

mark e, Saturday, 23 March 2013 19:38 (eleven years ago) link

oh not superhero comics at all, random sci-fi type w/ popish humor type stuff. "the umbrella academy" is out on dark horse comics and i'm struggling to remember the name of the other more recent one that was also great (but i got into late and had to jump around issues of)

oh, the other comics i was thinking of was casanova starring casanova quinn but it's not by way, gerard ba worked on it (who also worked on the umbrella academy)

Very fond of MCR, not least because they always seemed to have a good sense of their own ridiculousness. "I'm Not Okay" is still a go-to for when I want something loud in the car, and the last album has held up really well. Otoh, I probably have all the MCR I'll ever need, so the timing is probably good.

Didn't know they'd covered "Desolation Row." As far as punked-up Dylan goes, it's OK but no Jason and the Scorchers.

does everyone just get a job at a cafe now? genuinely curious what people do after this.

if you don't think they're all millionaires by now you're a moron.

liked a lot of their music but they were total narcissistic vengeful assholes to a friend who worked for them, hope they all die tbh

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 23 March 2013 23:42 (eleven years ago) link

Jeez, that sucks.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 23 March 2013 23:42 (eleven years ago) link

i kind of don't really know how much a band of their stature can be reasonably expected to earn or hold onto. maybe each member of the band is sitting on a single solitary million right now, kinda doubt it's much more than that, though.

Stephen Thomas Duttywine (some dude), Saturday, 23 March 2013 23:49 (eleven years ago) link

all their songs are about narcissism and revenge so i will take some perverse comfort in the knowledge that they really are bout that life

Stephen Thomas Duttywine (some dude), Saturday, 23 March 2013 23:49 (eleven years ago) link

Lol at being a better rock band than bon jovi being a big accomplishment.

ums (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 23 March 2013 23:53 (eleven years ago) link

also their teenage fan base are legion. (and insane)

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 23 March 2013 23:53 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i mean if they're wealthier than i speculated upthread it's probably because their merch sells like hotcakes

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Sunday, 24 March 2013 00:03 (eleven years ago) link

well i have even less of an idea of what kind of money people make in that business

Stephen Thomas Duttywine (some dude), Sunday, 24 March 2013 00:04 (eleven years ago) link

tempted to go look at one of those 'what celebrities are worth' sites to see whether they've added up the most optimistic profit figures from everything he's ever done to an $80 million total or something

Stephen Thomas Duttywine (some dude), Sunday, 24 March 2013 00:05 (eleven years ago) link

Didn't even know these sites existed tbh. Not sure what methodology they use.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 24 March 2013 00:08 (eleven years ago) link

But yeah, I would not have expected so high of a figure either.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 24 March 2013 00:09 (eleven years ago) link

yeah those sites all have ludicrously high figures that seem predicated on the assumption that entertainers and athletes save and wisely invest every dollar they've ever made which uh

Stephen Thomas Duttywine (some dude), Sunday, 24 March 2013 00:42 (eleven years ago) link

oh not superhero comics at all,

although it's the most blatant Grant Morrison Doom Patrol tribute band ever

gerrard has a p lucritave comic book career too

the last issue of Umbrella Academy sold under 21k copies, in May 2009; at 4% of cover he would have made $2500. how many houses do you think he bought with that in the last four years?

Devendra Bumhat (sic), Sunday, 24 March 2013 01:19 (eleven years ago) link

yeah but he's just one Hollywood studio option away from his big payoff

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Sunday, 24 March 2013 03:07 (eleven years ago) link

he probably made more money doing that song for the Watchmen soundtrack than every comic book he's ever written combined

some dude, Sunday, 24 March 2013 03:24 (eleven years ago) link

he's married to the woman from MSI who's basically one kickstarter away from $1.2m

LOL righttt in a thread hyping MCR this makes my day. keep it comin' champ.

the last issue of Umbrella Academy sold under 21k copies, in May 2009; at 4% of cover he would have made $2500.

not that i have any actual idea of how much he's making on anything but the original collected TPB reps over 45,000 copies, if the 4% cover thing stands that's $32000. then there was volume 2 tpb . ...and the limited edition hardcovers of both (~1500 copies, no idea what the original price was but LOL some are being resold on amazon for $900!). ...then add in the 6 individual issues of the first volume. the 4 of the second volume. just saying he's probably made a bit more than $2500 off them.

wikipedia mentions hollywood was already tryin' to movie it but it's gotten fizz-ly and is back to just alks.

damn, spread out that's over $6000 a year he's pulled in - no wonder he's splitting up the band

Devendra Bumhat (sic), Sunday, 24 March 2013 10:58 (eleven years ago) link

^loll right since that's what i said. you're not too good at comprehension (or math) huh. anywayyyy

made a spotify playlist of mcr DEEP CUTS: http://narrowcast.blogspot.com/2013/03/deep-album-cuts-vol-4-my-chemical.html

some dude, Sunday, 24 March 2013 17:56 (eleven years ago) link

nah fauxmarc's not an ILC-er

since that's what i said

well I quoted you directly. you're arguing specifically for his comics career being so "lucrative" that it would be a significant factor in making him a millionaire (with significantly higher than one solitary million dollars).

I cited the figures from his last published comic bcz this would be the best pointer as to what his "career" would be bringing in if it actually existed, and hadn't been something he last did four years ago. if you want to throw in the sales on the Dallas tpb, go ahead! and I'll work out some totals and we can see how high over $1,000,000 they'd bring his net wealth, but they do have to get broken down over six years to represent a career, ie ongoing income even if there's no new output

i can't really think of a big rock band in the past decade that made such great pop songs so consistently

there really aren't many big rock bands in the past decade period. much less ones that had pop hits over a prolonged period of time (arguably MCR didn't).

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 December 2018 15:56 (five years ago) link

none of their albums were perfect but: the sheer volume of ideas in each one! they were accused at the time of (and i even thought of them as) being another indistinguishable mass of mall emo but: no one sounded like them, especially by three cheers, that hybridized glam/arena rock/hardcore thing was theirs, and they made three very different albums that somehow found a new way to explore that dynamic every time. (and they also shelved a pretty decent one!) sidenote the jump in quality from the debut to three cheers, the feeling that their music had been sharpened down into this perfectly-edged thing, is so fun to experience

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 December 2018 16:06 (five years ago) link

lmao I tweeted this this morning, in a deliberate attempt to be inflammatory (though I do actually believe it)

MCR released more worthwhile music than Hole and Nirvana combined.
