It's hard enough to take a stand against an oppression that's widely dismissed as no big deal by your peers. When they start the barrage of criticism of you as a whiner and a bitch, it is natural to want to claim some moral high ground from which to fight off the onslaught.

If I had not felt so intimidated/uncomfortable the last time two guys on the street asked me if I'd ever had [a specific kind of] dick in me, I would totally have taken a picture of them and posted it on the internet. I have no problem with identifying ppl who make sexualizing/sexist remarks in public.

the tone goes a little overboard, it's not like she doesn't have enough of a case without bringing in genocide & lord of the flies & being a hero & saving a little girl's life or w/e the hell she's going on about there. But so what, she can blog however she wants & she's still in the right here.

Anyway the funniest bit of that is where she points out that dongles are designed to be small, so the joke doesn't even work. If she does a stand-up routine about this incident, she should centre it around that observation imo

lol, while she works in tech, she failed to realize she is not a technologist herself but in fact a marketer. if your primary role is to evangelize and market your company's services to developers, it's probably a good idea not to passive-aggressively attack said developers and their community.

"taken" sort of implies that the woman was the butt of the joke, or that she was at least in some way party to the conversation, or maybe that the joke even was about women.

The language is reallllly named after Monty python, like the homage is pretty deep, so I'm wondering if juvenile humor was more in the air than say at javaone

um i can't tell if i'm being trolled here? python devs tend to be younger and less big corporate and more startupy but that has like nothing to do with the genetic origins of the name of the language, and everything to do with where that language tends to be used. i've heard python conferences have reputations of being pretty chill affairs actually, especially when compared to what was reputedly the rampant dickishness in the ruby community. but as a whole, culturally, this is more about startup-land and not than anything else, i suspect.
