And yes the part at the end where she walks by Adam running through the streets,

I totally didn't even notice that

Walter Galt, Wednesday, 20 March 2013 12:01 (eleven years ago) link

Obviously she needs to get on but I found her paralysis totally relatable - at least, I had a similar thing happen to me a long time ago - a big opportunity (writing for the newly released Berliner Guardian) that I basically screwed up due to worry and procrastination. (In the end, that was partially what led to my quitting journalism - I'm much happier now!)

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 20 March 2013 13:05 (eleven years ago) link

It'd be a little too self-congratulatory to Lena to have Hannah actually write anything

less so than every male authority figure in the show telling her what a great writer she is?

holy shit i had no idea the utter utter lack of dues that allison williams paid before landing a lead role on a prestigious show: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allison_Williams_(actress)

getting a role on a small TV show on a cable channel by a first-time TV writer = paying your dues

( ͡° ͜ʖ͡°) (sic), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 23:59 (eleven years ago) link

She's obv good enough for the role so why does it matter

sleepingbag, Thursday, 21 March 2013 00:00 (eleven years ago) link

not even theater, not even bit parts. just a college comedy troupe --> critically lauded premium cable.

s.clover, Thursday, 21 March 2013 00:01 (eleven years ago) link

people care about that?

kinder, Thursday, 21 March 2013 00:02 (eleven years ago) link

sterling that stuff was already hashed out in the first 1000 posts itt

乒乓, Thursday, 21 March 2013 00:05 (eleven years ago) link

i remember it in general strokes but i didn't realize quite how totally out of nowhere williams was cast.

s.clover, Thursday, 21 March 2013 00:09 (eleven years ago) link

well, she's good in it so what does it matter?

jed_, Thursday, 21 March 2013 00:33 (eleven years ago) link

she had a prominent (ie duplass gf of the week i think) role in an episode of the league (held her own), played kate middleton in some miniseries also apparently.

balls, Thursday, 21 March 2013 01:03 (eleven years ago) link

lena dunham should have cast maggie smith in the role of marnie

i didn't mind it? I didn't *love* it but I wasn't upset or bored or anything. Adam running through the streets and cradling her was corny & on the nose but then again I was a little bit happy that she got a moment when she's living as an ocd hermit eating cool whip on the floor.

her haircut was very THIS IS MY MENTAL STATE and made me lol

She'll be doing "20 questions" in the next issue of Playboy.

totally not feeling the last 3 eps of this season wtf

four Marxes plus four Obamas plus four Bin Ladens (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 29 March 2013 18:22 (eleven years ago) link

i liked the episode. i only started watching Girls recently, after thinking it was cloying. i think marnie and charlie or what's his name are supposed to be obnoxious as fuck. but i think the representation of OCD is good and courageous, and not inaccurate. i have been in that mirror, with those scissors. it's not just a media metaphor, it's a thing. and i can also relate to the feeling of being completely alone dealing with an issue like this, and messing everything up with everyone. but then there's that one person. and however corny it is, dunham was dead on.

surm, Friday, 29 March 2013 18:34 (eleven years ago) link

I don't care if it was realistic or not, the whole OCD thing came out of nowhere and quickly became so central, it was just poorly integrated into the story arc. dgaf about Charlie and Marnie, this is a stupid storyline. Shosh and Ray way more interesting just as characters. the final running-through-the-street thing was like some third-hand Woody Allen-by way of Sex and the City cornball shit ugh ugh ugh

four Marxes plus four Obamas plus four Bin Ladens (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 29 March 2013 18:42 (eleven years ago) link

well, i haven't followed the season, so i can't speak to story arc. but whereas you may not care about how realistic the portrayal of mental illness is, a lot of people do, and a lot of people are glad to see it get screen time in an industry that has been hard-pressed to do so in the past. jennifer lawrence to thread

surm, Friday, 29 March 2013 18:47 (eleven years ago) link

and tbh, "the whole OCD thing" DOES come out of nowhere. like, IRL. seems like the character dealt with it heavily in the past and it was just now resurfacing. that happens. so there's that. ps believe me i never thought i'd be fighting for this show.

surm, Friday, 29 March 2013 18:55 (eleven years ago) link

I thought it came out of nowhere as well but my girlfriend pointed out several times it was subtly alluded too in prior episodes. Like when she first start writing the book, a few episodes back, she took 8 concise little sips, which at the time I thought was just a silly little quirk.

dan selzer, Friday, 29 March 2013 19:13 (eleven years ago) link

okay I didn't notice that - I did just watch the whole season in the last couple nights tho

four Marxes plus four Obamas plus four Bin Ladens (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 29 March 2013 19:16 (eleven years ago) link

It's way better that it (apparently) came out of nowhere. Hate formulaic foreshadowing and as everyone has said, shit from your past can just resurface.

i rescreened the 'one mans trash' ep - damn, it is so good. patrick wilson and lena too are really great in it

in my world of tangentially known young ppl, i was talking to my friend's younger sister, shes maybe like 23, & apparently all her friends hated this ep, she loved it

Gawker article calls Girls "increasingly sallow", which is either an unfortunate typo or weirdly specific, hilarious complaint

relentless technosexuality (DJP), Thursday, 4 April 2013 14:53 (eleven years ago) link

haha, maybe its a typo. people use that for, like, colorless and boring, maybe

purp (roxymuzak), Thursday, 4 April 2013 15:09 (eleven years ago) link

the cinematography has been more and more yellow recently

乒乓, Thursday, 4 April 2013 15:10 (eleven years ago) link

the actors are literally bloodless iirc

purp (roxymuzak), Thursday, 4 April 2013 15:11 (eleven years ago) link

the cinematography has been more and more yellow recently

someone pointed that out in the comments complete with screenshots, which made me think it wasn't actually a typo

relentless technosexuality (DJP), Thursday, 4 April 2013 15:12 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe she's just casting a jaundiced eye at the show.
