I'll reserve judgment until I hear the finished track

Raymond Cummings, Wednesday, 20 March 2013 03:45 (eleven years ago) link

I'm kinda scared that Old won't even touch XX
Since that mixtape I've been mostly underwhelmed/disappointed by his tracks/guest spots

Raymond Cummings, Wednesday, 20 March 2013 03:52 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i'm not too sure about this

I like it, the beat reminds me of Ayo Technology.

mmmm. i may need another listen.

two months pass...

somehow i completely missed Hottest MC when it came out; it took Spin's list of the 40 best songs of the year so far for me to find it

now i can't stop listening to it:

http://www.spin.com/articles/best-songs-tracks-2013-so-far-list/?slide=12

can someone tell me the name of the This Heat song is that's apparently sampled here, according to Spin?

alpine static, Thursday, 30 May 2013 04:37 (ten years ago) link

the big sample there is not this heat but vangelis (more precisely, aphrodite's child)

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Thursday, 30 May 2013 19:19 (ten years ago) link

yeah This Heat was sampled on "Adderall Admiral" on XXX

loving Old (late to the game, I know). the second half is crazy. love the reappropriation of "Da Dip" in 'Dip'.

Anyone managed to get a copy of the 4xLP LE for Old? Amazon has it listed as backordered :(

"tell me what i don't know" is stunning

like the more natural delivery, his really antic, hyper voice wears on me

tbh hoping for the antic wild stuff live, though

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 19:55 (seven years ago) link

M@tt otm, best when he finds the balance between the two voices. May be why I still prefer The Hybrid to anything else he's released since.

Spottie, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 20:04 (seven years ago) link

gripes about the voice aside...man...this album is really something huh?

this has been a problem for me from day one. love everything about Danny except those songs.

like the more natural delivery, his really antic, hyper voice wears on me

alpine static, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:11 (seven years ago) link

imo the "natural voice" stuff is mostly a framing device for the "here comes danny brown!" moment when the lyrics fall back into the depression/paranoia.... drugs/pussy/no sleep/AHHHH lyrical breakdown

Spottie, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 22:21 (seven years ago) link

album kinda dropped off in the middle but the ends are great

Spottie, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 22:21 (seven years ago) link

ungh I think the openers have short sets so they threw a really perfunctory dj out. maybe should have shown up later -- I usually like to see openers but this is padding wtf

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Wednesday, 28 September 2016 01:42 (seven years ago) link

first thoughts are all "omg this the best shit ever" hyperbole. it's obv not perfect but i don't see my opinion dropping much!

i can see some of the backlash coming already - look, he made an artsy noisy obtuse album for ppl who don't like street rap/ppl who dont like popular rap/hipsters/insert strawman here - but every indication of his personality makes me feel like he made exactly what he wanted to make, and hear.

(overwrought metaphor coming) it feels like distorted sonar dispatches from someone traveling through the inside of his head. (overwrought metaphor that i nonetheless believe complete)

only getting to listen to this in small chunks but it's great so far. i don't always like Paul White's production but it works for a cohesive sound across the whole thing (the beat on 'Pneumonia' though, i'd be ok if Evian Christ did every track).

Spottie, Sunday, 2 October 2016 02:48 (seven years ago) link

Album has its moments, but it's not as good as Old so far... production sounds like its competing with DB. White Lines is cool though.

love this album, especially all the uptempo tracks. it's all i've felt like listening to lately.

production sounds like its competing with DB.

when i heard the tracks they released ahead of the album i had that same thought, that the post-punky samples didn't really blend with his voice, but in context it all somehow works.

on the other hand, i really don't like the production on the new Open Mike Eagle, there it clashes and doesn't leave enough space for him.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:18 (seven years ago) link

I didn't think I'd ever heard this guy, but after ^ that description I suspected it was that weird sounding guy on that one track on Sour Soul, and so I investigated and of course it is. will probably listen to this

really excited that paul white is back producing on at least some of the new one. tbd which tracks, but i'd bet that's him on the first released tune "tantor." either way it's fantastic. can't wait for the rest.

genius video, banger track

assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 20 November 2023 03:32 (four months ago) link

loving this - feels like it has more variety & space than the last couple might be down to the two distinct voices he uses & how on some of these tracks he has simplified his rhyming to i guess suit the primal grunt of the emotions he was experiencing some of that stuff reminds of scarface love ypb / jenns terrific etc but the whole thing i think is gold
