In other interesting nerd news, you can now leverage the kernel stealthing capabilities of the Sony/Columbia DRM rootkit (available on recent compact discs released by Sony labels) to disguise your WoW Haxxx from the Blizzard not-so-stealth anti-cheating spyware agent. WHERE TIME BECOMES A LOOP. WHERE TIME BECOMES A LOOP. WHERE TIME BECOMES A LOOP.

It's been almost two weeks since Dan's last update. I don't play this game, because here I get all the benefit of numbers going up and hear all the gossip about the lvl 60 Horde, who camp the low 50s grinding/quest areas in the Western Plaguelands, without having to put any work in myself!

Did you reach level 60, Dan?

My friends that are playing this need to stop now...

sleep (sleep), Sunday, 20 November 2005 02:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Alterac Valley (the new PVP battleground) is interesting in that it's the most like old Warcraft. The other two (Warsong Gulch and Arathi Basin) are Capture the Flag and Zone Control respectively (I don't know the usual FPS name for the seond one, but you probably get the idea). In AV, you get quests to do (which obviously you take part in at the expense of dealing with the small army pouring towards you from the other side), which can improve the armor of non-player units on your side, or create a force of wolfriders, or summon a massive elemental to rampage down the screen. The main drive of the game is to advance into your opponents territory, destroying or occupying specific sites along the way. Laying siege to bunkers and towers helps eventually with the main goal of defeating the enemy general, who loses a defensive unit per building taken. The tactical advantage of occupying a graveyard, allowing your players to respawn there after death, and denying the opposing army the same priviledge, is fairly clear.

To see one of the reasons this falls down, look at a change made a few patches back to the other two BGs: They used to group together people by their level: 21-30, 31-40 etc all the way up to 60 (the level cap). This was changed to 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60. For a good reason too: There's a pileup effect at 60, so with each patch Blizzard, mindful of the monthly fee, has introduced more content aimed at that range, with more and shinier rewards for the characters (there's a bit of your brain that would be soothed by watching someone count to 100, and it's this bit, among others, that WoW is aimed at). As a result, the gap between two players, one who turned 60 last week, and one three months ago, is at least as big as that between a lvl 50 and lvl 59. This is also true for most of the milestones: at 10,20, etc characters gain new skills, and the way they play the game changes. Not least among these, the lvl40 and lvl60 mounts, ridable animals which boost your speed by 60% and 100%. But AV only has one range: 51-60. One or two of the above quests are suitable for the lower levels, but they only take half an hour at most, and AV games are LONG, stretching from 4 to 8 or 10 hours. So most of the time, quite a few of the players on the field are having no real effect at all. I've seen a lvl 60 kill a lvl 51 in considerably less time than it took to type (or read!) this sentence.

The other reason is related, which is that without a full team of lvl60s, the final assault can be near impossible. Apart from the respawning guards, the other players pour out of their final graveyard at a considerable rate. The majority of games (on my server) aren't won by completing the aims, but by attrition in the Alliance's favour. There's a safeguard to make smaller games possible without stacking the deck in favour of the larger faction: the maximum number of players in a team is 40, but the game can start when there's 30 ready. After that, the players are only added in pairs, and only if ther teams are already level. So if one of the Horde drops out, the vacancy has to be filled and someone else has to enter the queue before an Alliance player can be added. But this doesn't cover what happens when someone drops out and there's no-one to replace them. Eventually (we are here talking at 2-3am for a game that started at around 6-7pm) the number of Horde players drops below 10, and the Alliance win by default.

Melton is so OTFM. I won't go near this game but I'm fascinated. DP is the only person I know who plays/posts about this regularly.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 21 November 2005 10:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Hahaha um, I did NOT hit 60. My rested bonus ran out and my grinding came to a CRASHING HALT last week; also I've been busy *gasp* GOING TO PARTIES AND CONCERTS WITH MY WIFE so I haven't had the chance to really play.

I did hit 52, though. A WINNER IS ME!

I also still suck at PvP. Bah.

While my main bulds up rested bonus, I've been levelling up my other PvP toons:

- lvl 26 human priest (enchanter/skinner)
- lvl 13 gnome warlock (engineer/miner)
- lvl 8 night elf druid (alchemist/herbalist)

I think my warlock is going to end up being a BAD ASS. Also, when my priest gets mind control, LOOK OUT.

Okay i am thinking of trying this out. I generally like teh rpg of any sort but the only mmorpg i've tried is ultima online very early on in it's life and i didn't like it much.

I didn't like the fact that practically nothing was going on at all in the world and there was a huge focus on clans/alliances and doing things as part of a party. I hated the whole partying up thing mostly because i didn't like the ppl very much.

Twist my arm or tell me to try city of heroes instead, or ignore me at yr leisure.

MY guild and I have been playing the 1.9 test server rather vigorously, and i can safely say this will be the patch to crush all patches.

Will M. (Will M.), Friday, 25 November 2005 04:30 (fourteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

There's still a pretty strong group component, particularly once you get to higher levels; the good thing is that while it helps to be part of a guild/clan, you don't have to be. I can't compare this game to any others because it's the only MMORPG I've played but I love it.

Toon update:

Teufelstod (dwarven warrior) is on the cusp of hitting 54, meaning that the 40 gold I dumped on an armor set will soon be money well spent.

Grinz (human priest) is at 27 right now. I need to do some Stockades runs with him and just find more groups in general.

Deezil (night elf druid) is at 16 right now; when I get around to it I will get his water form.

Lunnil (gnome warlock) is at 15. He's sitting in Westfall right now waiting to pwn some goretusks.

Tolenar (human paladin) is at level 4. I started him just to get a feel for the class before the patch.

Engelfeuer (dwarven hunter) is at 6. I had a hunter on another server and that class was fun, so this is my other spare time wait-for-rested-bonus toon.

Dan (Challenge!) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 12 December 2005 21:47 (fourteen years ago) link

good thing is that while it helps to be part of a guild/clan, you don't have to be

I get the impression that when you get to the larger dungeons with 20-40 people, your chances with a pick-up group go sharply downhill.

Given that you're not that bothered about regularly grouping with the same people, why all Alliance?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 01:28 (fourteen years ago) link

As soon as I hit submit, I realised that the answer is probably "so I can send stuff from the big guys to the little guys"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 01:29 (fourteen years ago) link

God, this game sounds good. Is it really as unfeasibly complex as it sounds?

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 02:00 (fourteen years ago) link

It's more accessible and streamlined than any other MMORPG that came before it. It has a lot of depth without being particularly complex, and the many intricacies of every level of gameplay will generally reveal themselves to you in ways that aren't overwhelming.

From the Wow page on naming conventions:

Contain "Leet" or "Dudespeak"
This category includes names which:

* Consist of language existent only in online communication (i.e. Roflcopter, xxnewbxx, Roxxoryou

If a player is found to have such a name for their character, guild, or pet, he/she may:

* Be assigned a randomly generated temporary name, to be changed via the online ticket system
* Be given a warning
* Be temporarily or permanently suspended from the game ).

OMG. Roflcopter.

kingfish holiday travesty (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 30 December 2005 21:07 (fourteen years ago) link

They're all like that. There's a fair list of things you can choose when selecting your character, but body type, apart obviously from species and sex, isn't one. More obvious on the ladeez: an imposing piece of armor on the men is often a metal push-up bra on the women.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 30 December 2005 21:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh, i know. I think character design like that is pretty standard, especially in american/anglo fantasy/mmorpgs.

i just thought it was funny that a nice shot of elf titties was the first image used for the article.

some friends of mine just got into this, which made me consider coming back. but my enthusiasm diminished again when i remembered how much i hate all the quests that want you to collect 90 tails of ratgays from the dickswamp of spermsorrows, especially when those rats only drop like 1 gaytail after killing 40 of them, which is even MORE impossible and stupid and boring and gay when trying to do it in a party and everyone else wants the gaytail or whatever pointless fetch quest item is inserted.

PLAY UPDATE: I've levelled my priest Grinz to 29. Priests seem to oscillate wildly between being really, really fun and really, really boring. I've also got my hunter up to 13 (wolf pet) and am remembering exactly how much I love the hunter class. My warrior is stalled out at 54; I just don't feel like playing him right now (ditto my warlock and paladin).

Dan (Wait'll I Get Mind Control!) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 18:17 (fourteen years ago) link

I deleted my hunter today. I still really love the class (and the changes made in 1.7 meant that me+my pet was always in the top 2 damage dealers in any raid), but I'd finished every quest in the game apart from the ones in the later instances. My guild's good, and I enjoy playing with them, but all that's left is PVP grinding, raid instance grinding, or rep grinding. Also I need to get a job :)
