Crank the bass, I gotta get some more

To

And you died for the thrill and the kill and your heart’s had its will
But it still creeps closer and you want it to freeze
But you’re weak and diseased and the beat and the beat gets closer…….

We give it up and then they take it away

The über-song of death (and despair) is back. Right up there with SOTU, NGA and The Show (Love Machine and LHS are kinda different beast)

iodine (iodine), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 22:08 (eighteen years ago) link

I mean this is giving me the same thrills SOTU gave me, I love this soooo much!

iodine (iodine), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 22:10 (eighteen years ago) link

why don't you pull me, feed me, say you need, without wicked games?
come on and hold me, help me, say you love me and not my dirty brain
why don't you pull me, feed me, say you need, without wicked games?
come on and hold me, help me, say you love me and not my dirty brain

I got one alabama return
that don't take me far away from you
cause when you take me in your arms, I turn to slave, I can't be saved

so I got my cappuccino to go
and I'm heading for the hills again
cause if we party anymore we’ll start the fire of pure desire

closer, your mind's flying blind
with your head and your face
getting red and your heart beats closer

you fall on your knees
and the geek at your feet
says you're neat and the beat gets closer

and you died for the thrill
and the kill and your heart's had its will
but he still creeps closer

you want it to freeze
but you're weak and too deep
and the beat and the beat gets closer

(closer, closer, closer, closer, closer, closer, closer)

we give it up
and then they take it away
a girl's got to zip it up
and get her head in the shade

baby, we give it up
it's just a matter of time
before all the heavy stuff
comes back to bite your behind

you can't mistake my biology
(the way that we talk, the way that we walk, it's there in our thoughts)
the magic number's in front of me
(the way that we talk, the way we that we walk, so easily caught)
you can't mistake my biology
(the way that we talk, the way that we walk, it's there in our thoughts)
we're gonna cause a controversy
(the way that we talk, the way we that we walk, so easily caught)

why don't you pull me, feed me, say you need, without wicked games?
come on and hold me, help me, say you love me and not my dirty brain
why don't you pull me, feed me, say you need, without wicked games?
come on and hold me, help me, say you love me and not my dirty brain
why don't you pull me, feed me, say you need, without wicked games?

can't hear the T in "return", really, and it does sound like "alabama" but I dunno

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 23:43 (eighteen years ago) link

oh, "say you need me" not "say you need", in all of those, of course

Top one. Nice one. Get sorted!

"The way that we TALK. The way that we WALK."

I agree that the above chorus is poptastic, but it takes its time getting to the good bits. Don't really understand who thought the first 30 seconds or so of pounding piano was a good intro to the song.

John Hunter, Thursday, 13 October 2005 05:19 (eighteen years ago) link

where did i thouhgt brits were supposed to have good diction and enunciation go to?

my lyrics are much better, save a couple of mistakes, I think

Have never been a big fan of Girls Aloud till I heard this new track 'Biology' and saw the video on CD UK that goes with it and have to admit this is by far the best thing they have done, and is going to do really well.

Why ? Because it breaks a few rules ..... it's true that it sounds a bit like 3 diff songs spliced together but that it part of the genius of the song. I think you will find that a lot of people, like myself, that have never really been hooked on the girls and their music in the past will be hooked with this track.

The chorus, whether tou loveit or hate it, is as catchy as hell and one you cant get out of your head after you have heard it.

Only disappointment is the video. GREAT concept, girls look fantastic, love the whole idea, etc, etc ..... BUT .... the syncronisation is appauling, and sone of the editing is just not quite on the money !!! Whoever edited it needs shooting coz the look of video is brilliant and goes well with the song, as do the dance routines, etc, but one or two of them, who will remain nameless, need to loosen up and not appear so stiff or like they are getting instructions from the floor manager just out of line of sight on the sets.

Apart from that, this will be Top 3 and possibly even a Number one.

Watch this space !!!

Good Song.

and girls aloud dvd is called "girls on film " but their duran duran cover isn't on dvd because it wasn't a single.

retroboy, Sunday, 16 October 2005 10:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Awesome. I don't mind the 3-songs-in-1 thing at all. In fact all my favourite bands tend to have this element to their records. More like this on the album plz!

Jeff W, Sunday, 16 October 2005 11:29 (eighteen years ago) link

Will 'Biology' really be top 3? Plenty of people have said it'll kill their career as the kids just won't get it. I, however, LOVE it. Just watched the Home Truths show, someone give Cheryl and Ashley their own reality TV show asap as they are ADORABLE.

Affectian (Affectian), Sunday, 16 October 2005 14:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Like all the best Girls aloud songs (No Good Advice, Sound of the Underground, Love Machine), Biology brings a cocaine-like warmness to my teeths. Guess it has something to do with the multi-layered ad-lib -and I hope there will be an extended version for this one.

snowballing (snowballing), Sunday, 16 October 2005 15:03 (eighteen years ago) link

The people complaining about the blues piano riff are dead fucking wrong. That's the best part by far, and while there's other good bits in there (and it's a pretty fine single), the rest is just so much pop gloss without anything to differentiate it.

js (honestengine), Sunday, 16 October 2005 18:00 (eighteen years ago) link

After listening to both singles on constant repeat for the past several days, I'm going to go against the grain and declare "Long Hot Summer" to be far superior to "Biology."

Has there ever been a better pop lyric than "I know you like to wear my dressing gown / when I'm not there / I guess you like it in my shoes / just 'cause you drive a Maserati / and the ladies stare / don't mean you'll go as fast as I do"

I don't think so.

wooooooow, choon.

N_RQ, Monday, 17 October 2005 08:15 (eighteen years ago) link

Blimey, it was on TOTP last night (along with the Sugababes video - HOW HOTTT WAS THAT?!?!?) and I'm stunned at how GA are going from strength to strength. How do they have the right to be that good? But they justify everything I've ever said about loving bubblegum and prefab music. Wow.

Paranoid Spice (kate), Monday, 17 October 2005 08:39 (eighteen years ago) link

We played it twice at Poptimism, hurrah! Not much dancefloor action but it sounded great, and it's early days yet.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 17 October 2005 08:49 (eighteen years ago) link

the transition between the second and third songs is fucking mental, like it's all been done with filters or something. both this and 'LHS' have a kind of late-90s mitsubishi rush feel to them, i think.

N_RQ, Monday, 17 October 2005 08:53 (eighteen years ago) link

This is totally Prog-pop!

Seconded!!!

I'll go further and say I have previously found them unfailingly inane & actively, deeply boring. Seriously, they are only usually beaten at this 'making regular pop music hateful' by the goddess of meh - Ms. Stevens.

But this one has... a memorable tune! some restraint! is not embarrasingly oh-so-clever or cringeworthy on some other musical level. They actually sound like a proper 'girl group'* on this, and not something created in some dr. frankenstein's labratory of really-bad-meta-pop.

Yes, kudos to whoever's behind this one! They (GA) hardly have a great strike rate so far, but I cannot deny this one's goodness.

*Please don't read some wacked out ideas about what I sexistly think a 'girl group' is 'supposed' to be, or absurd limits I'm putting on the form. I'm just saying it's 5 girls, singing harmonies - about anything you like ok? As flexible as you want it to be, they've just *never* worked for me before.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 17 October 2005 16:59 (eighteen years ago) link

That said, it's still not massively remarkable imho.

and obviously pwn3d completely by Robyn.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 17 October 2005 17:04 (eighteen years ago) link

I've never seen them in motion before, so im not sure if this is par for the course or not, but did anyone notice the choreography in the video looks as though it was done by grade schoolers? Its seriously giving me flashbacks to the dance routines girls would perform at the old talent shows. It's pretty adorable actually, particularly the bit when they launch into the first chorus.

The dance routine looks loads better with some male backing dancers thrown in!!

Joshua, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 02:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Hmmm, let me retract some. The dancing (in this video at least) = GREAT!

The song itself, now that I've heard it a few times... Okay, it's actually really f*cking annoying how it wanks about working it's way through, like, three separate song sections. I realise this is usual for them, but ffs! Is it supposed to be an insurance policy to stop fans crossing over to Rachel Stevens? Talk about covering all bases...

But enough. When they do stop faffing and get to the point, it's still - damn! I never expected them to thrill me even a little at this late stage, esp. as I've previously found them really cack-handed and/or just cack.

login name (fandango), Thursday, 20 October 2005 05:56 (eighteen years ago) link

...and it's the chorus that makes it. Sod the lyrics!

Where they've been lumpy, flat & very, very contrived before, this feels completely free. The hook/vocal/melody just breezes in from nowhere & gets it SO right it sounds like the easiest thing ever.

login name (fandango), Thursday, 20 October 2005 06:08 (eighteen years ago) link

once THAT chorus kicks in it's very similar to 5ive's ' keep on movin' '. Ot is rather catchy tho.

just the girls all in a row facing away from camera kneeling over a table with their buttocks on show. Cheryl had a slight look of 'oh noes wait, this might end up on a tabloid front page tomorrow...but...can't...seem to stop...'

#6

:(

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:30 (eighteen years ago) link

finally heard this. it's ok. i expect more of our girls though.

'the show' = three choruses welded together
'biology' = three bridges sellotaped together

also, irritating guitar jangle which is far too busy and far too fast

also, sounds a bit like franz ferdinand :(

otm. the 'biology' vid is almost genius, it's the kind of thing k-punk would like, but j-u-u-u-st falls short.

it seems that the girls are getting quite a bit of critical kudos in the uk. (ive actually only seen two guardian reviews and a blogger made list of "important bands".)does anyone think there is a possibilty that many american magazines/webzines will do so as well? not really affecting chart success in the US but at least maybe creating a heightened awareness of girls aloud?
