we saw some fucking hueg trees knocked over in riverside park last week. walking on riverside drive I asked my son "how much force would it take to not only pull that tree (gestures) up by its roots but rip apart the pavement too? isn't that what you did in science class this year?" CMON DAD IM DONE WITH SCHOOL OK!

I love all the storms this summer. To me this is what living on the East Coast (or not living on the West Coast because it is also a memory from the Midwest) is all about.

glass office towers are a somewhat disconcerting place from which to observe the furies of nature.

for a minute or two the rain was blowing up. then it started to around in big circles.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 05:38 (fourteen years ago) link

got to the radio station with two bags of records shortly before this minor thunderstorm eventtt. the lightning was nice, and some nice booming thunder, but it blew its load too early. i could have gone for a few more hours.

ian, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 05:46 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah by the time i got off work all was calm.

Somebody tonight was telling me that there had been a tornado in Central Park. And that a hundred trees were felled. And that they were in a restaurant on a boat called the Frying Pan on the river looking at the lightning on the water and that the serving trays were flying around like playing cards, as thrown by Ricky Jay.

Horace Silver Machine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 20 August 2009 04:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Well, I added the part about Ricky Jay but the rest they told me.

Really glad I no longer live in a basement in Park Slope. Hope everyone's ok.

Lily Dale, Saturday, 30 September 2023 14:37 (six months ago) link

Yeah I was thinking about the basement apartment dwellers especially in the areas where the water rise was over the sidewalk level

calstars, Saturday, 30 September 2023 15:16 (six months ago) link

It’s especially bad considering how many basement apts are illegal and how many are the homes for undocumented people.

Plumber has been trying to diagnose a long-standing leak over here, punched a hole in our wall just in time for this storm and now there is some kind of spray behind the plastic they put up over the hole which is leaking slowly onto the floor, feels like maybe is something draining from the roof.
