It shouldn't be two hours, and Julia isn't always up to the quieter moments (as she would be later), but as a showcase for five wonderful actresses it's solid. I haven't seen it since 1991 when several friends at the girls Catholic high school starred in a production.
I forgot how little screen time MacLaine has compared to Dolly Parton, who's wonderful and the MVP. She should've gotten the Oscar nod.
Dolly’s the best thing about it, yes. As far as the cinema of Dolly Parton goes, I actually prefer it to 9 to 5 (though Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is better than either of them).

I have more than a few problems with the whole ... thing that is this play/movie. But I agree that its performances carry it a long way further than I would otherwise be willing to go.
I like that the kid that killed Shelby was born on my birthday.
