ps I'm not some crazy radiohead fan, I've just always found kraftwerk to be more important than enjoyable, outside of like 'computer love'

I think Radiohead is plenty childlike but more like the stuff of children's nightmares. thom yorke's doom and gloom (especially around kid a and amnesiac) always felt a bit like a ten-year-old confronting the idea of death for the first time.

I would imagine this totally comes down to when and what you hear. My first Kraftwerk exposure was "Trans-Europe Express" in my mid-teens and I certainly got THAT right away, but I'm not sure I would have picked up on, say, "The Looking Glass" the same way.
