Thanks guys. I just have to not end up in a body bag til this weekend.

So say we all

bbag bbag my nebby shot me down (darraghmac), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 17:57 (eleven years ago) link

wow, crazy roommate just charmed the crap out of the super here, went on some screed about how good his wife's cooking smells. that's how people like this survive. meanwhile i'm calling up friends to see if i can crash at their place for the night.

Spectrum, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 23:46 (eleven years ago) link

Straight fucking sociopath. Congrats on getting out.

Coke Opus (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 23:52 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, wow. sorry you had to deal with it, glad you're getting out!!

Yeah tat guy sounds seriously dangerous.

a kissed out red popemobile (Trayce), Thursday, 28 February 2013 05:59 (eleven years ago) link

i'm moving out this weekend fortunately. i talked to my super about this guy and he said they're going to evict him ... apparently he thought the guy was creepy, too, but the landlord (who lives in Canada) just wanted money fast. i don't want to be around when that happens. this guy is a huge fucking liar, though, i hope he doesn't pull some slick shit to get out of being evicted.

first moment i met him i knew something was up. dangerous looking guy strutting through, doesn't even shake my hand when he meets me, just gives this "i don't give a fuck about you" half-assed head nod. then when i'm talking to him he sounded like a cool guy. "yeah, my personal belief is you gotta respect other peoples' perspectives ... they're just as valid as anyone elses. it's all relative." which of course he most obviously does not believe. this is a good lesson in trusting your gut instinct.

Spectrum, Thursday, 28 February 2013 14:19 (eleven years ago) link

what is the difference between this dude and 'stormin' norman schwartzkopf?

this dude failed to obtain full spectrum dominance

nakhchivan, Thursday, 28 February 2013 15:52 (eleven years ago) link

i had the unfortunate luck of having two sociopathic parents, so this guy brought back a lot of memories. i don't think he was thrilled i knew all his tricks.

Spectrum, Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:31 (eleven years ago) link

How did you end up with him? Are you living by yourself in your new place? Also three cheers for your landlord for letting you move out so quickly, and three cheers to you for getting the fuck out of there ASAP.

carl agatha, Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:43 (eleven years ago) link

ime anybody who starts asserting their personally-held beliefs is usually speaking aspirationally. sorry you're having to move

i hold the kwok and you hold the kee (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 28 February 2013 17:09 (eleven years ago) link

Funny story. My landlord chooses the tenants exclusively, and said to me "I'm going to work very hard for you to get a good roommate, I don't want you living with a psycho." So this guy checks out the place, my super tells the landlord this guy seemed dangerous and he shouldn't rent the room to him, and my landlord tells him to rent it to him anyway. This landlord was another interesting specimen ... he went out of his way to seem like the sweetest, most gentle and naive person in the world, but he simply did not give a fuck about this insane guy, all he cared about was cold hard cash. Good ole' life lessons offered this month.

At least my LL let me leave, though I never signed a lease so it's not like he could do anything about it.

Spectrum, Thursday, 28 February 2013 17:12 (eleven years ago) link

ime anybody who starts asserting their personally-held beliefs is usually speaking aspirationally. sorry you're having to move

yeah, this dawned on me. well at least there was a lot of valuable experience to be had here.

Spectrum, Thursday, 28 February 2013 17:13 (eleven years ago) link

though in this case it was less aspirational and more an attempt to create a false image that had no relation to what the person was really like.

Spectrum, Thursday, 28 February 2013 17:15 (eleven years ago) link

That's called interacting with others ime

bbag bbag my nebby shot me down (darraghmac), Thursday, 28 February 2013 17:25 (eleven years ago) link

it's a matter of degree i think. not everyone creates an image specially designed to help a potentially violent criminal get through society. i've seen this shit in action first hand. everyone's a little phony to some degree, but having a distinct lack of respect for basic humanity isn't all that common, and this is coming from a recovering cynic. when you see aggressive, dead, predatory eyes with your own you know the difference, and thank god not everyone's like that.

Spectrum, Thursday, 28 February 2013 17:35 (eleven years ago) link

"yeah, my personal belief is you gotta respect other peoples' perspectives"

Sounds somewhat sociopathic in that say-the-opposite-of-what-you-mean. Does this guy think this viewpoint is unique, that it's not practiced by others and therefore needs to be internalized into a 'personal belief'? Do you think he gets kicks out of picturing what a deep and amazing perspective he has on the world?

I have a new roommate who for a long time has been a self-styled acid casualty/damaged genuis who sometimes talks about his own amazing and unique perspective and just won't shut up about it. Some people are entirely swallowed up in their egos.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 28 February 2013 17:39 (eleven years ago) link

When guys like this say 'respect the perspectives of others' they mean 'my way, or the highway'. Decent people don't have to say this crap to others.

xxp yeah, it's the opposite because it's a cover. my dad was like that, seemed like the sweetest most fun guy in the world, everyone loved him, until he wraps you up with a bindry machine and leaves you trapped in a warehouse overnight because he didn't like you (and he's proud of this story!!!). or my mom, super friendly and kind on the outside, but on the weekends goes out with her friends to drag tree onto the highway to watch cars crash into it (she's proud of this, too! wtf).

acid casualty/damaged geniuses are a way different order. met a couple of those. they're harmless but annoying. might have good drugs at least.

Spectrum, Thursday, 28 February 2013 17:48 (eleven years ago) link

This guy is an actor and never has to work. Yeah this dude got drunk and ended up screaming "You are all full of shit!" for two hours at all of his friends last weekend. The next day he first pretended to not know what he did, then later on started joking, reaffirming what he was on about, and congratulating his vast and awesome perspective. Pretty sure he never apologized to anyone, much less me, who had to drive him home from a house party full of mutual friends saying "Get him out of here". Later I'm thinking, so these friends of your are full of shit, yet you are the one screaming at the top of your lungs at 3am and acting like an ass.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 28 February 2013 17:51 (eleven years ago) link

Likewise, whenever people get on about how bad things are and victimize themselves, they really just need a fucking job. Get out of the house, do something for someone else for half a day, and then we'll see if you're still whining about stubbing your toe or burning your beans or whatever happens on your way from the bedroom to the front porch smoke area.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 28 February 2013 17:58 (eleven years ago) link

Really, it makes total sense that you always see people on TV whining about how the rich are demonized and have it so bad, etc. They don't have anything real to complain about, so they have to fabricate stuff, and deep down they know it isn't real, so they have to dramatize and emphasize and really blow it up and get your attention.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 28 February 2013 17:59 (eleven years ago) link

crap, the apartment i'm moving into has a lead paint warning attached to the lease. does anyone know anything about this?

Spectrum, Thursday, 28 February 2013 21:05 (eleven years ago) link

Unless you're a pregnant woman or have small children it shouldn't be an issue.

sadly that shit was normal to me as a kid, which is pretty fucked up. unfortunately i don't think i should even have kids to make sure this crap doesn't get passed on, even if it missed me. under no circumstance do i want to bring more people like my parents or my roommate into this world. life can be such a lovely roll of the dice sometimes... but at least i was born in the good ole US of A, so that's something. i always felt like my family made a contract with the devil and now it's starting to make sense why.

Spectrum, Friday, 1 March 2013 15:21 (eleven years ago) link

It took me a long time to realize that in probably most countries the citizens grow up thinking "At least i was born in the good ole __________". And i had somewhat leftist parents. The power of propaganda is effing strong.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 1 March 2013 15:51 (eleven years ago) link

even really shit countries have patriotism

☠ ☃ ☠ (mh), Friday, 1 March 2013 15:55 (eleven years ago) link

Well, I mean, things really could be a lot worse. There are people suffering even worse fates all over the world ... like the story of that guy born in a North Korean prison camp. Some fucked up shit happens in the world, and there's no reason why someone isn't born to middle class parents in Sweden or kidnapped into a diamond mine slave ring in Africa. It's a salve, but it's also true.

Spectrum, Friday, 1 March 2013 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

can you move to a nicer part of USA?

Philip Nunez, Friday, 1 March 2013 16:05 (eleven years ago) link

"There are people suffering worse fates so my life isn't that bad"

yeah I've thought this before, but it turns out my life could be a lot better with surprisingly little effort, too

☠ ☃ ☠ (mh), Friday, 1 March 2013 16:40 (eleven years ago) link

I do buy into the narrative where in the US you can go and be what you want,
but your outcomes are really at the mercy of where you happen to be.
Like Al Gore's roommate was Tommy Lee Jones.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 1 March 2013 18:31 (eleven years ago) link

I had a really awful roommate once who had stopped drinking and started doing yoga like 2 weeks before I moved in and had the zeal of the converted. Fine, but she was really judgmental about things I chose to do that had no impact on her whatsoever. She would make comments about how I brought too many boys over and stuff. I also had a roommate whose whole family were scientologists and took like 90 different supplements everyday, but she paid for us to have a lot of MTV channels so that was cool.

emilys., Saturday, 2 March 2013 00:12 (eleven years ago) link

Best roommate ever was this German astrophysicist named Derek who was always sharing delicious food and fielding science questions. That guy was also down for any and every afterparty, and had some amazing dance moves. Giant hulk of a guy with long hair & receding hairline.

emilys., Saturday, 2 March 2013 00:14 (eleven years ago) link
