It's an okay track, but it's bettered by all the little weird synth choices.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 20:07 (eleven years ago) link

yuck, boring British electro-pop. That's disappointing

Evan R, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 20:30 (eleven years ago) link

There were better demo tracks that aren't getting an outing on Body Music.

"Make No Mistake"
"Double Sixes"
"Disobey"

that is great

the original is probably the best song they've done but this remix >>>>>

lex pretend, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 11:25 (eleven years ago) link

wasnt really bothered about the ungainly og tbh but given there's always silk purses to be made with this lot it's nbd

four months pass...

their album leaked

monotony, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:15 (ten years ago) link

Yikes; her voice cannot carry an album.

Evan R, Monday, 22 July 2013 04:59 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, it's pretty much a dud.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 22 July 2013 05:21 (ten years ago) link

wretched. but in fairness though aluna just is what she is, it's george that's the utterly clueless one here

r|t|c, Monday, 22 July 2013 06:11 (ten years ago) link

alunageorge - attracting flies (shift k3y remix)
alunageorge - you know you like it (b-15 project remix)
alunageorge - your drums, your love (lil silva remix)
disclosure ft alunageorge - white noise

imagine an actual body music worthy of the name comprised of these and more. her voice can carry, it's just not to be deferred to

r|t|c, Monday, 22 July 2013 06:19 (ten years ago) link

Body Music is indeed a really big disappointment, it drags so much. The Quadron album is the kind of album they should have made.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 23 July 2013 05:20 (ten years ago) link

Lol at the idea that she has a voice anywhere near appropriate for anything as sumptuous as the Quadron album.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 23 July 2013 08:28 (ten years ago) link

I was going to say, there's no way they could have pulled off an album as languidly and luxuriantly arranged as the quadron or rhye records, she's not got the voice for it - it scans newsom-esque to me with trappings of nancy from oliver twist - and george trades in glittery sleek synths rather than clarinets and handclaps

i don't think it's a terrible record and i still think highly of the singles, but there are composition problems with a few of the tracks - i feel like "best be believing" could've really been quite spectacular if they'd bothered to write a proper chorus, the middle eight on "superstar" is pissweak and some of the lines on "friends to lovers" - actually, some of the lines on a number of the tracks - are very ungainly (i have the same problem with the disclosure album actually)

i'd agree that their sound is a little bit staid and fatiguing in the "album form" but my major gripe would be that the whole thing's a bit colourless - like, to me, in "your drums your love" aluna comes across as a complex mix of tense and sad and doe-eyed and frustrated all at once - and the production contributes to that atmosphere - but in other songs the vocals and the production seem a bit lifeless, lacking in energy, less vital.

monotony, Tuesday, 23 July 2013 11:19 (ten years ago) link

reminds me of the La Roux album; some great singles and unmemorable same-y album tracks. whole thing seems wearing on the ear and that voice really grates after a while. Best Be Believing is a keeper IMO, This Is How We Do It cover is way fun.

piscesx, Tuesday, 23 July 2013 11:41 (ten years ago) link

wow this album teaching me that aluna's voice is annoying in several further ways other than the couple i'd already clocked

rtc otm in that george is responsible for the aridity on display here though

the quadron album is sooooooo good and getting better all the time

lex pretend, Tuesday, 23 July 2013 13:24 (ten years ago) link

oh god, the "this is how we do it" cover is the worst thing though

lex pretend, Tuesday, 23 July 2013 13:34 (ten years ago) link

WHAT????

what makes a man start polls? (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 23 July 2013 13:38 (ten years ago) link

like pisces says they fit quite happily into a long lineage of "oh is that what the original sounds like" artists

i guess having a producer beard is undoubtedly a much safer position than freelance hookstress

r|t|c, Tuesday, 23 July 2013 13:38 (ten years ago) link

why the hell would you cover perfection?

what makes a man start polls? (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 23 July 2013 13:38 (ten years ago) link

body music is such a bafflingly unsuited title too. least physical music ever

lex pretend, Tuesday, 23 July 2013 13:59 (ten years ago) link

Agreed. That title was maybe 30% of the reason I was excited about the record. Definitely a broken promise.

Evan R, Tuesday, 23 July 2013 14:19 (ten years ago) link

Hey, I'm liking it.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 July 2013 17:12 (ten years ago) link

this Montell Jordan cover isn't nearly as bad as I was expecting, basically it sounds like a lost Mis-Teeq song to me

"Post-Oven" (DJP), Thursday, 25 July 2013 17:16 (ten years ago) link

It just occurred to me that Body Music is basically a reductive wallpaper version of Barbara Panther's 2011 album. Now that I've made that connection, I may come around to whatever charms it may possess.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 25 July 2013 17:22 (ten years ago) link

no dan, this is what mis-teeq sound like covering montell jordan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ua_2APsBMU

(and that's a pretty minor mis-teeq single!)

lex pretend, Friday, 26 July 2013 09:33 (ten years ago) link

This got a particularly glowing review in the Graun today but it was impossible to read without getting the sense that Petridis was using it as a vehicle to impress his enthusiasm for the current UK pop landscape rather than the record itself.

Matt DC, Friday, 26 July 2013 09:37 (ten years ago) link

I'm not sure I can be arsed to even listen to this frankly. That they finished their Glastonbury set with 'White Noise' speaks volumes.

Matt DC, Friday, 26 July 2013 09:38 (ten years ago) link

there's at least one interview where aluna or george (I forget which one) admits the montell jordan cover was a joke, fwiw

i like the new version of "diver" a lot

J0rdan S., Monday, 29 July 2013 20:19 (ten years ago) link

i don't really get "hysterically bad" or anything from this. it sounds, uh, like a bunch of alunageorge songs lined up in a row, which predictably kinda dulls the entire enterprise

J0rdan S., Monday, 29 July 2013 20:30 (ten years ago) link

"Diver" is great, but hearing it in the context of the album, after six lesser variations of the same idea, tempers its impact a lot

Evan R, Monday, 29 July 2013 20:49 (ten years ago) link

one alunageorge song in a row is enough to dull the entire enterprise

I love reading a full-blown fanboy love letter to a new album.

Deafening silence (DL), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 20:10 (ten years ago) link

It's a beaut.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 20:11 (ten years ago) link

a shiny coin of no currency

r|t|c, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 20:47 (ten years ago) link

I like pretty much all of the singles but the rest of the album is zzzzz-grade filler. The one new track I enjoyed on first listen was "Bad Idea".

three weeks pass...

This isn't the car crash I expected from reading this thread. It's not great by any stretch, but it's amazing how you get more used to - accepting, even - of her voice the more boring his production becomes. She has interesting voice, but she doesn't know how to use it properly, what with her inconsistent garbles and stutters and his failed experiments in vocal science. It doesn't help that there at a lot of real lyrical clunkers and a whiff of Songwriting For Dummies about it.

Remember Hudson Mohawke's production for Nadsroic? What this album seems to be aiming for could be done really well and I'd love to hear it.

not listened to the album but 'lost and found' is sounding great on the latest DJ Q mix

yes i thought so too

r|t|c, Friday, 23 August 2013 12:07 (ten years ago) link

I take it that its a standout on the album then? Folks here are sayin the production is boring but this sparkles.

six months pass...

I've gotten to like the album a lot, mostly via remixes. (I generally do still like some of the remixes more.) These songs are packed with hooks and it's almost like I needed to hear some of those hooks in isolation before appreciating them as much in their original settings.

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 14 April 2016 15:51 (eight years ago) link

"I'm In Control" is great, a really good fake "Lean On"

boxedjoy, Thursday, 14 April 2016 17:22 (eight years ago) link

this new album is a huge improvement on the debut. Her voice isn't nearly as grating and he seems to have learned a lot more tricks.
