Must admit I stumped up for them, they've always been difficult to source legit in the UK. They have a mixed reputation - ie they can't match the Siltbreeze albs - but New Electric Music in partic hit the spot w/ me

I think I like Keenan best when he does long-form band profiles, but I would buy that issue regardless of who wrote it. Seems like a great time to check in with such a long-standing, interesting band.

They only really clicked for me this year, as well.

Saw this today and snapped it up! I hardly ever buy Wire these days but this was straight-up terrific, they were not kidding when they said "we are handing you this article on a plate", with at least a dozen terrific quotes reaching a hilarious high-point when Bruce talked about his year in London, describing Jesus and Mary Chain/The Fall gigs as terrible and all the C86 stuff as piss, and then hurrying back to NZ to "do something about it". And oh my he quite clearly did!

Rudolph Grey aside I expected a lot more talk re: no wave, cause I see Dead C as blues-via-no wave (and Pere Ubu which they do talk about)

It was also quite moving how they describe their early years at the end of the world, trying to draw their own map of rock music/punk/ and the struggle to reach out to others anywhere for records - its that whole business of trying to make your own community, and a culture, and to connect, and that's what you hold onto...

So so good, buy it TODAY at your nearest newsagent if you can!

Man, that sounds great. Last issue on newstands here (U.S.) was the Wolf Eyes issue, which I got not too long ago. Think it will still be a bit before I can get it.

New Zealander Michael Morley (notably a member of The Dead C) is set to drop his latest work with his solo project Gate. Saturday Night Fever is a reinterpretation of the music from the movie of that name, expanding on the ideas about dance music that Morley established on Gate’s 2010 LP A Republic of Sadness. As fellow noise-guy-turned-dance-enthusiast Pete Swanson puts it: “The resulting album sounds like Morley's pulling out some heaping doses of the hermit boogie and Otago funk and stretching it into some sort of Basinskian disintegration loop gone Bernard Bonnier zonked mutant scene.” The opening track from Saturday Night Fever, a beast of a piece called “Asset,” starts out as a pseudo-disco track with sampled horns and turns into something more like what you’d expect from the hands behind the feedback-drenched and claustrophobic songs of The Dead C. Throw this onto your noise show after-party playlist because it’s the coolest disco is ever going to get.

I have been loving this "Saturday Night Fever" album. I haven't been keeping up with what Michael Morley's been doing in a long time but I think this album is incredible. It's no disco album at all, but I see how the inspiration has incorporated itself. Long, throbbing, looping tracks that have been run through Morley's special brand of wood chipper.

Such great stuff. I'll need to check out that Republic of Sadness.

Yup, Morley again. Had a great year so far.

He's posting a lot of pay-what-you-want albums under the guise "The Righteous Yeah".

Also, the three Gate volumes of "A word to you who have great possessions" are really nice ambient stuff (although not pay-what-you-want).

Nice, just caught this and now have a good set of listening ahead of me.
