dude is missing all kinds of points and also possibly throwing shade at Christina Hendricks who was not Hollywood's idea of anything before Mad Men

Women, Fire, and Dangerous Zings (silby), Thursday, 14 February 2013 07:31 (eleven years ago) link

Exactly; she throws shit out there to see what will happen. I'd be interested to see a scenario where a deliberately provocative act doesn't come off well.

This happened in the first season where she jokingly accused the guy who was interviewing her for a job of being a date rapist at school. That's just off the top of my head.

I thought this last episode was AMAZING btw. Loved every moment.

My article, "I Am Super-Hot Guy Who Has Slept With Women Who Look Like Lena Dunham", was sadly rejected by xoJane.

i sort of feel like lots of discussion of why would he with hannah sort of overlooks the obvious -- she's in her early 20s, she's in his house, she kissed him, and he's going through a divorce and feeling really conflicted.

one interesting way to read this episode is as the other side of a manic-pixie-dream-girl type thing.

s.clover, Thursday, 14 February 2013 22:44 (eleven years ago) link

I feel like I say this after every episode but so much of this show is so real to me/hits so close to home/reflects my own experiences with life in ways I have never seen in media before (like, I basically did this episode in Raleigh, N.C. two years ago). When ppl are all "oh man this show is SOOO UNREALISTIC and absurd" or talk abt how it's a crazy, farce-ish comedy thing like some hipster update of an 80's Bette Midler film it basically comes off as them boasting abt how out of touch they are.

lol, i do think of you when i watch this show Steve

OTM

Also, and largely building on all of the above, I saw part of his motivation as willing himself to just go along with something that normally would seem too out-there, largely because Hannah was driving things so all he had to do was agree.

Reminded me of the Taylor Swift lyric in "Treacherous": "I can't decide if it's a choice / getting swept away / I hear the sound of my own voice / asking you to stay" - funnily enough this is literally applicable here, Hannah asking dude to beg her to stay allowed him to do something that his persona would never countenance otherwise.

I think a lot of weird romantic / amorous encounters can be like this, it's almost as if you're going along with things just to be agreeable, but at the same time it's more than that, you're being agreeable because it allows you to experience something without taking the responsibility for having planned or directed it.

Emily Nussbaum on this ep

Women, Fire, and Dangerous Zings (silby), Saturday, 16 February 2013 19:30 (eleven years ago) link

Loved nussbaum's take.

Last night a guy told me he thought Patrick Wilson's r'ship with Hannah is a cipher for the audience's, which struck me as possibly true and very subtly done if so.

no! that's interesting. I DVR'ed it and it cut off during the credits.

the ray & adam show was entertaining

liked ray's idealized vision of "a family and its dog" vs. what he actually found there

a lot of funny throwaway lines in this one. like when they get on the ferry mumbling "stupid fucking boat." or the woman going "control your animal!"

dmr, Monday, 18 February 2013 17:11 (eleven years ago) link

finding this show less interesting when it gets nu-sitcom
after last week's ep, i want more stand alone A-thread stories with individual characters instead of five poorly developed B-threads

Even by Zales standards, that's sad. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 18 February 2013 17:20 (eleven years ago) link

i think id prefer if it cared less abt character arcs & had less thru-plotlines

how's life, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 17:54 (eleven years ago) link

This show is not so awful. I enjoyed the dog-driven dude time in the last one. Also Marnie's situation just sort of feels less and less realistic each show, like this guy is obviously an idiot and you seem to have known him for a while, this can't be the first time he has acted like a complete asshole to you. Then again maybe that's just realistic and if we actually learned from our mistakes in real life this show would probably be way different.

Next time Hannah says "I want to experience everything!" someone needs to answer "Except for having a real job".

Lisa Lampanelli is the worst.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 19 February 2013 20:10 (eleven years ago) link

In explaining her reasons for switching from journalism to comedy, Lampanelli stated not only for the pay raise, but because “I get to say the n-word word on stage and get paid money."

I don't think she even liked him really, dude was otm when he said Marnie just liked the idea of him and didn't even know him. she just wanted back in the art world, thought it was cool to be throwing art parties and stuff.

dmr, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 22:53 (eleven years ago) link

the Hannah/Marnie phone call where they both lied that they were doing great rang kinda true

dmr, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, great way to end the episode and retroactively gave their prior scenes some punch they might have lacked otherwise.

At first I thought it seemed unlikely when Marnie started to cry but then I liked how quickly she got over it and didn't seem to blame art dude really - it was like she had fully known she was lying to herself but was a bit disappointed that it didn't last for a few more weeks before the lie became untenable.

lol dunham doing air quotes around the insult comic

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 04:30 (eleven years ago) link

Ethnic and racial minority insults, slurs, and stereotypes are a predominant part of Lampanelli's comedy routine. Among some of her blatantly racist insults while doing stand-up, include: "How many ‘hispangics’ (sic) does it take to clean a bathroom? None! That’s a nigger’s job!"; “What do you call a black woman who’s had seven abortions? A crime fighter”; In addition, Gossip site TMZ reported that censors for the Comedy Central Roast of Flavor Flav cut a Lampanelli joke where she called the Flavor of Love girls in the audience "nappy headed bitches." In addressing her racist stand-up comedy, Lampanelli stated, "I can get away with it because I'm a nice person, I have a warm personality, my intention is good behind it. The thing is, people sense when you have the least bit of anger or hate towards a group –– that's why you never make fun of people you don't like." Though only having married white men, she makes frequent references to her "real-life relationships with black men", riffing in an interview that "my problem is, I can't get a good-looking white guy anymore, I just don't have the looks to get that. I can get hot blacks, but also blacks are now starting to get uppity and go for the skinny white ones and the Asians, which is very offensive to me that they don't stick with their roots — the chubby white girl!"

the last two episodes of this have been great.still can't relate with any of the characters, feel it's kind of dumb and obvious in places, and just like a soap opera at times, and not in a good way.but it's really compelling and funny at times (hannah beginning to write that story "room for cream?" killed me.adam saying to ray "maybe cause we're both weird looking = gold).

"Her name was Murjashihaway" made me irl lol so fucking hard, like the idea of coming up with a name that ridiculous, and then crafting a sentence that exists just to draw attention to it, and then having that sentence be the first and only sentence of your book thus far was absolutely incredible.
