xp So many of his contemporaries are beholden to the clique that spawned them or the bigger star that sired them. That's not the case with Miguel.

he's beholden to ILM.

I've read a couple variations of the "Miguel is great and all, but he doesn't have a narrative" argument

what is this argument? what are the people making it actually trying to say? is it a complaint? o_0

lex pretend, Monday, 11 February 2013 22:25 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, it's a compliment; the gist is that Miguel doesn't have that same narrative advantages Frank Ocean had. Which, yeah, that's true; there's no inspiring, groundbreaking story there to fuel the buzz, so the music has to stand on its own

Evan R, Monday, 11 February 2013 22:29 (eleven years ago) link

yeah the closest thing he has to an ~angle~ is vaguely aligning himself with ~indie r&b~ (and the conscious way he does this is pretty lol, it's like he knows it's just savvy marketing/branding - esp considering how little he sounds like anyone else under that umbrella)

lex pretend, Monday, 11 February 2013 22:31 (eleven years ago) link

in the UK, he's had coverage without even any heavy PRing

lex pretend, Monday, 11 February 2013 22:33 (eleven years ago) link

three weeks pass...

I loooooove this album so much. Hadn't heard any Miguel til EOY tracks poll, but holy shit

so THAT's why this thread was at the top of SNA for so long (facepalm @ me)

VG, considering you are one of the now seven ppl who post in the Meshell Ndegeocello thread, it is only right and natural that you are in love w this album

Josh and D.A.M. (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 9 March 2013 05:25 (eleven years ago) link

<3 so many threads coming together with this dude

and the fuckin ZOMBIES on top of everything

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 9 March 2013 05:28 (eleven years ago) link

I took that 'ZOMBIES' literally, like there was some sort of horror movie reference that I had missed

p appropriate though considering Dont Look Back does kind of have a sort of that suspense to it, like it could be used in some teenybopper zomgbie movie trailer, or like in a promo for Walking Dead or something

Josh and D.A.M. (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 9 March 2013 05:33 (eleven years ago) link

lol wow that is a poorly constructed sentence, deliberate typo notwithstanding

Josh and D.A.M. (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 9 March 2013 05:34 (eleven years ago) link

lol Miguel + actual zombies, whiney would shit

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 9 March 2013 05:35 (eleven years ago) link

love how random snippets of Kaleidoscope songs will pop into my head each day - lots of cool little earworms in all these tracks.

oh and K3v otm -- I listened to the first album today, so good

he did a "Candles In The Sun" video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTrnI-XKEH0

i was right upthread about "How Many Drinks" being the next single without "Do You" ever fully catching on, at no point was it less than 20 spots below "Adorn" on the radio charts

some dude, Friday, 15 March 2013 02:02 (eleven years ago) link

re-entered the hip-hop/r&b top 50 this week but yeah... i mean "adorn" is still hanging around the top 40, i'm not sure if any single would've succeeded in its shadow

J0rdan S., Friday, 15 March 2013 02:39 (eleven years ago) link

"how many drinks" is dope tho so it's cool

J0rdan S., Friday, 15 March 2013 02:39 (eleven years ago) link

yeah it's great, the rap gets stuck in my head

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 15 March 2013 02:40 (eleven years ago) link

still amazed at "Adorn"'s success.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 15 March 2013 02:51 (eleven years ago) link

was thinking a few days ago that "how many drinks" with miguel's rap verses swapped out for an actual rapper seemed like an obvious fourth or fifth single choice

and that we ended up with kenny and not wale is a small miracle

A$AP Rovi (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 March 2013 04:45 (eleven years ago) link

lol kendrick is going to turn the song into another temperance movement anthem, isn't he

miguel's 'rap' isn't really like a 16 bar thing and it directly transitions into the great variations in the last chorus so i hope they just add the kendrick verse to the song and don't do any kind of swap out w/ that section

Diddy-Drugs A. Money (some dude), Thursday, 28 March 2013 11:40 (eleven years ago) link

also kendrick's wardrobe is getting a little miguel haha

Diddy-Drugs A. Money (some dude), Thursday, 28 March 2013 11:41 (eleven years ago) link

yeah miggy's rap is fine

k3vin k., Thursday, 28 March 2013 15:37 (eleven years ago) link

i mean "that ass is colossal" is one of those things that ends up not really sounding very seductive/complimentary, but the way the spoken bit drifts into the "waste my time/waste your time" bit and then those great ad libs over the chorus is awesome

yeah this is the best part of the song, the entire final 30 or 45 seconds or whatever it is

A$AP Rovi (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 March 2013 15:43 (eleven years ago) link

but it always seemed obv to me that they'd just switch in a real rapper to give it some juice as a single

A$AP Rovi (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 March 2013 15:43 (eleven years ago) link

it's def not a desecration on the level of Wiz on "Adorn" but the way Kendrick bunts songs like "Fuckin' Problems" has me wary

Diddy-Drugs A. Money (some dude), Thursday, 28 March 2013 15:56 (eleven years ago) link

people love his "fuckin problems" verse

A$AP Rovi (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 March 2013 16:47 (eleven years ago) link

yeah I think its a solid verse

乒乓, Thursday, 28 March 2013 16:49 (eleven years ago) link

cunnilingus ah um (The Reverend), Thursday, 28 March 2013 17:00 (eleven years ago) link

hah asap's verse is the 'kill' out of marry fuck kill on that song

乒乓, Thursday, 28 March 2013 17:00 (eleven years ago) link

you want dih dih???

i'll never tell

乒乓, Thursday, 28 March 2013 17:04 (eleven years ago) link

there's not one hot line in the kendrick verse, it's all a bunch of half-hearted almost punchlines. people do like the weird way he says "dick" almost as much as the weird way he says "bitch," though.

lol xpost

girl i'm kendrick lamar / a.k.a. volcanic to me is lahar

Diddy-Drugs A. Money (some dude), Thursday, 28 March 2013 17:28 (eleven years ago) link

pro tip: make kendrick's lamar a lot weirder by imagining him saying "pampers and threesomes tomorrow"

乒乓, Thursday, 28 March 2013 19:47 (eleven years ago) link

lol

Diddy-Drugs A. Money (some dude), Thursday, 28 March 2013 19:48 (eleven years ago) link

Has this remix come out yet?

Evan R, Thursday, 28 March 2013 20:31 (eleven years ago) link

nah only announced

Diddy-Drugs A. Money (some dude), Thursday, 28 March 2013 20:32 (eleven years ago) link

Stirred a lot of buzz for just an announcement. But anyway, Kendrick can't do worse by the song than Jay-Z did to the "BKMV" remix. Cautiously optimistic
