sorry -- that's the outrage i can muster atm
not because it's not terrible, it's obviously terrible, but because i can't connect it to fertility and women's bodies any more than i can connect it to any other travesty of modern life
people are the worst

Also something about the vast majority of women homicide victims being killed by male family members (or ex-family members).

"the comparatively small number of men who feel entitled to those things and cheated when they don't control them, and how bitter and final their vengeance is when they've been thwarted."

Die in a fire, men's rights movement.

(Also, I posted this on the Chicago thread (because I did not expect anyone to be talking about this anywhere else), but Wilmington DE's chief of police was at a gun control round table with Joe Biden in Philadelphia when this happened.)

I saw that post-script in the version of the article that dayo posted this morning! Ironing.

yeah everything about that story is terrible.
i guess i am at max cap for horrible human behavior currently and cannot become outraged if i also want to get my laundry done and teach people how to describe things tomorrow

i didn't mean to be flip, just trying to conserve energy :(

i guess the current fashion for MRA rhetoric has made it seem like a new legitimacy is being given to such men's sense of entitlement over their offspring? even if the only "legitimacy" is that of a vocal hardcore, who can make the link to the question of individual liberty because the state tends to not be on their side.

bantz a make her dance (c sharp major), Monday, 11 February 2013 19:56 (eleven years ago) link

I think the MRA stuff is obviously a backlash to the world changing toward incrementally greater parity for women, which is where the world should keep right on going, but the death throes of each stage are so explosively violent and damaging.

One monk, whom Ms. Stubbs said she told about the touching, was unsympathetic. “He believed in Roshi’s style, that sexualizing was teaching for particular women,” Ms. Stubbs said. The monk’s theory, common in Mr. Sasaki’s circle, was that such physicality could check a woman’s overly strong ego.

It seems to be the kind of thing that, you get the person as a whole, good and bad, just like you marry somebody and you get their strengths and wonderful qualities as well as their weaknesses.

You know, like how when you're assaulted, you get both the good AND bad qualities of your assailant!

carl agatha, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 19:48 (eleven years ago) link

Women and their overly strong egos just need to be sexually assaulted into submission!

By now, to a large extent advertisers don't have to spell out this stuff anymore because the advertising worked - we internalized the messages as truth. I think it's interesting to look at these ads as milestones on the path from the days before companies made up fears of odor in the "vaginal area" to sell products to today, when the message re: our filthy smelly snatches has been fully internalized and can be referenced with a picture of a woman in white pants smiling or just the word "freshness."

haha, I actually posted this to my band's fb page

You must be very cold in the sack. (sarahell), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 21:29 (ten years ago) link

Wait I can't even get past the first one. So many things. So many! But mint?! Mint smelling vagina just seems so damn weird.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 21:30 (ten years ago) link

don't they have mint-flavored/scented condoms?

You must be very cold in the sack. (sarahell), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 21:32 (ten years ago) link

the fact that scented tampons are still commercial available infuriates me - if only because I have accidentally purchased them and they are the WORST things ever

i'd rather wear a scented tampon than one of those horrible-looking menstrual pad/belt contraptions my mom did when she was a teenager

good point

not that scented tampons aren't gross

You must be very cold in the sack. (sarahell), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 21:37 (ten years ago) link

Scented tampons are weird and gross and bad for you too.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 21:37 (ten years ago) link

I guess the do make mint condoms but I assumed that was for blow jobs so you didn't taste latex? Tbh I never used one so never thought about it. I mean how many people actually use condoms for blowjobs is another convo but yeah.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 21:38 (ten years ago) link

lol it raises so many questions that you don't want to think about

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 21:40 (ten years ago) link

xp - I always thought of it as a like a "don't acknowledge the 4th wall" kinda thing with the 4th wall being the condom, as in you would not let the condom get in the way of stuff you'd normally do without it as a barrier, i dunno

You must be very cold in the sack. (sarahell), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 21:43 (ten years ago) link

definitely weird and gross to put perfume in your vagina imo, but i have a weird attraction to anything scented, so this is conflicting in an odd way

Like the time I accidentally bought Febreeze scented garbage bags, which made our inside trash, which sometimes smells like garbage but usually smells like coffee grounds or nothing noticeable, smell like trashy Febreeze. Ugh. UGH.

Not that vaginas smell like trash, mind you.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 22:58 (ten years ago) link

It is so bad. Apologies to whomever I'm about to offend, but anybody who buys those on purpose has no sense of smell. Or decency.

I can't even stand scented cat litter; no way am I putting nasty commercial scent up my vagina!

On a related note, why the fucking fuck is it so hard to find regular cardboard applicator tampons these days? FUCK YOUR PEARL JUST GIVE ME MY BIODEGRADABLE PLS THANK U.

I have contemplated this, but it would be a major departure and I dunno seems less convenient?

quincie, Thursday, 2 May 2013 00:59 (ten years ago) link

u can leave it in like forever depending on how much gunk you produce, that's pretty convenient

veryupsetmom (harbl), Thursday, 2 May 2013 01:03 (ten years ago) link

Also do not have to buy replacements while in foreign country away from major suppliers.

Growing my nails have made tampons so much more dangerous (I live on the edge - tuck the string in because I cannot deal with that feeling.)

Quincie I believe I complained about the same thing on another thread! Why are they so insistent on making everyone use more plastic?

kinder, Thursday, 2 May 2013 08:07 (ten years ago) link

do they sell non-applicator tampons in the US at all? i am one of those smug cup-using hippies, but back when i bought tampons on the regular p much all uk non-tampax options were applicator-free.

snapchats and tattoos (c sharp major), Thursday, 2 May 2013 08:23 (ten years ago) link

i had the hardest time finding non-app tampons when i moved here - in nz it's the opposite case. i think there is only like ONE brand of non-app here.

just1n3, Thursday, 2 May 2013 08:34 (ten years ago) link

OB is strictly non-applicator now. I think there is at least one other brand that makes a non-app variant

You must be very cold in the sack. (sarahell), Thursday, 2 May 2013 09:49 (ten years ago) link

Ob was always non app weren't they? Keep it simple and set yourself free from the extras that you really don't need. Just try OB and you'll see.

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Thursday, 2 May 2013 11:36 (ten years ago) link

OB
it's the way it should be

They were non-applicator when I was in high school so they've been non-app since the 80s at least.

carl agatha, Thursday, 2 May 2013 12:46 (ten years ago) link

i love OB
