truly twas a thing of wonderment

My vote. I guess it makes sense that a game so dependent on being topical (every episode was created the week it was released) was removed after a few months.

DOOM 3 - does it own, pwn, or both?

diamonddave85: Back in the early to mid-nineties, my dad would take me to a ham radio convention every year where they would have booth after booth of shareware floppies that you could buy. My dad had heard about Doom from a coworker or something and decided to pick up Doom 1 & 2 so we could play together, much to my mom's horror. Playing doom with my dad is one of my earliest computer related memories and as someone who is now in computers professionally, it is one of my fondest.
I had gotten my dad a ps3 a couple years back for xmas (mostly for blu-ray and netflix) but he really didn't play many games on it. It would seem that most videogames these days don't really appeal to a 60 year old man (the exception being Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X, which he played quite a bit). This year, I picked him up the BFG edition mainly because it came packaged with Doom 1 & 2. playing Doom again with my dad on xmas morning was well worth the price. Between that and playing Flower with my mom and sister for about 4 hours in one sitting, this xmas was one of the first times my family had bonded over videogames for a good 15+ years

Final Fantasy XIII-2 worst video game name of the year

zero dark (s1ocki), Saturday, 9 February 2013 20:25 (eleven years ago) link

should have called it Final Fantasy XI

brogue element (seandalai), Saturday, 9 February 2013 20:26 (eleven years ago) link

It's a sequel to Final Fantasy XIII - what else are you going to call it?

Also it isn't even the worst name in this thread so far (Black! Knight! Sword!) and we're only at #60

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 9 February 2013 20:28 (eleven years ago) link

oh i dont know, final fantasy FOURTEEN maybe

zero dark (s1ocki), Saturday, 9 February 2013 20:37 (eleven years ago) link

But none of the main-series games are sequels to each other?

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 9 February 2013 20:42 (eleven years ago) link

they should have called it final fantasy 13: chronicles of the windsweeper or something. it just looks like it's final fantasy 13's second disc or something!

This list is already pretty bizarre!

bro-five to whoever voted for Double Dragon Neon. I had to double check my ballot to make sure I didn't vote for it, but I was pretty entertained by it. the ending song alone! (Thx for those links, forks, some good reading)

Chronicles of the pee pee ding ding

Jeff, Saturday, 9 February 2013 21:04 (eleven years ago) link

FF13-2 was my vote (eep). The story is still nonsense but the characters were a lot better. (In the first game the characters encounter a no-win situation, and then you get a lot of cutscenes about courage and family and all that Disney shit, ending with them choosing the no-win path which involves killing a lot of people.)

Double Dragon Neon was also mine. Not sure about the tapes mechanism -- it's a bit too much like cow-clicking -- but otherwise it's a lot of fun. Here's a playthrough from a big Double Dragon fan: http://youtu.be/In917B12R_Q

abanana, Sunday, 10 February 2013 00:26 (eleven years ago) link

the previous FF was better in my book, not least because I could actually _beat_ it. the story was also less dark, and less weird.

Little Inferno

Forksclovetofu: Another game about games in a year where these were everywhere to be found, Little Inferno (along with 10000000 and Spec Ops) asks you if you really want to play at all. Fairly short but surprisingly twisted, with a depth that’s difficult to explain as (maybe just this once) the spoilers really are spoilers. All my DEEP THOUGHTS on completion were neatly echoed by Errant Signal's excellent video essay linked up top. This is a near close call as my favorite game of the year; now that it’s out on iOS, you really owe it to yourself to give it a whirl. Dream bigger!

Zora: A beautifully drawn, fairly fiendish, amusing little p&c adventure game. It harked back to the best kind of children's TV and books; the non-patronising kind. I'd have scored it higher but it was -gasp- too hard for me. Pure spite.

diamonddave85:Back in college, my roommate, a guy down the hall and I would get stoned and take turns playing a level from SMW to see who could finish the level the fastest. We realized that part of the genius of Mario games was that almost every level was impeccably designed to be run through at top speed: jumps and enemy placement were just in the right place so you could run through a level with an unbroken flow. Ever since then, my preferred style of playing Mario games is to run through as fast as I can and try to achieve that flow. Although I'm still getting used to the levels, this style of play seems to be encouraged in NSMB2 (the coin block head powerup should make this obvious). Because it seems like this was a focal design consideration, this has been one of the more enjoyable of the newer 2d Mario games for me.

YES, so true. watching youtube speed runs of SMB3 can make it seem like the entire game was designed so some genius kid could chain together a bunch of jumps and bounces off of enemies in one, perfect way that all other playthroughs pale next to
