Nah, no winds no piano, just the melody kinda repeated, bit of an afterthought really. I can imagine Ralf thinking, 'how am I going to render this hippie nonsense?'

Going again tonight and getting the butterflies thinking about it now, could get used to this, kinda envious of Doran's residency...!

Great pics and feedback from the gig, folks! Top stuff.

after seeing last night and how amazing it was, now have the rest of the week to get excited about Man Machine plus i'm seeing a performance of George Antheil's Ballet Mechanique beforehand at the RFH which is nice and thematically linked and its basically going to be the best day ever

youtube started throwing up tons of grade A live kraftwerk for me about three weeks ago, including captures of the Düsseldorf shows.

lo-fi audience recording of January's Radio-Aktivität. the big disappointment is that News & Transistor aren't live at all, just them playing short excerpts straight off the record -- but Airwaves & Antenna are fun

the Flur article is hilarious

For Jill or anybody else. Just met a friend who got in tonight without an advance ticket, he pitched up at six and queued at the left hand entrance at the front, he said it was no trouble at all. So there *is* a system in place.

Lovely to meet Neil S of this parish at KW tonight. Spotted Andy McCluskey of OMD stood behind us and a guy with a knitted Man Machine jumper that put mine to shame...

Oh God, even better Radioland was so, so fucking lovely.

He's become a bit of a talking head for these shows, hasn't he? Not that it surprises me at all!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 7 February 2013 23:48 (eleven years ago) link

The sound in there was amazing. So excited to hear bits coming from all around me. it was so clear. We were unfortunate enough to end up standing next to a couple, where the guy was giving a running commentary to his girlfriend all night, but I guess that's what happens to me at most London gigs.

Aww, that last paragraph..

Mark G, Friday, 8 February 2013 09:38 (eleven years ago) link

Great to meet you too Doran! The show was so awesome. Loved the retro-futurist 3D stuff, and as others have said the sound quality was amazing, seemingly achieved just by hanging some curtains around the hall.

Neil S, Friday, 8 February 2013 10:22 (eleven years ago) link

It was even more enjoyable than night 1, the Radioactivity songs came across great, even the 'playback' ones had moving 3D text, I was smacked in the face with an 'ü', people were ducking. Felt like a better crowd too, lots of genuine appreciation, somewhere in the middle the applause and whooping threatened to spill into an ovation and the band were all smiling at each other, it was fab.

MaresNest, Friday, 8 February 2013 11:21 (eleven years ago) link

I gave a cheer for the "meet Iggy Pop and David Bowie" line in Trans Europe Express, that was a nice moment. In fact that was my favourite bit of the show, the visuals for that were fantastic.

Neil S, Friday, 8 February 2013 11:38 (eleven years ago) link

I heard you!

What were the visuals?

Hate that Flür piece for the Quietus, it hits all the buttons that reading his memoirs ("I Was A Robot") installed - self-justification by dismissing others (Hütter ánd Schneider, now that the latter's left he's apparently on his side), his 'eye' for young girls that became increasingly uncomfortable to read... I put it away halfway through, even though there's lots of interesting stuff on the band and the music itself in there.

willem, Friday, 8 February 2013 12:11 (eleven years ago) link

it used the design from the recent reisssue below, and had lots of swooping shots of the stylised train going across intersecting railway lines. It really made use of the 3D and looked lovely in black and white. I'm a sucker for anything train related!

oh and a tip, for anyone who's going to the remaining shows- avoid paying £5 for a can of lager by bringing your own, there were no bag searches last night at least.

That's me, W@d3y and Neil S standing up in Mare's Nest's top photo!

Doran, Friday, 8 February 2013 14:20 (eleven years ago) link

And there's a lady sitting down just to the right, clearly thinking: "Shut up pontificating you bellend!"

Doran, Friday, 8 February 2013 14:21 (eleven years ago) link

Hah, no way!

MaresNest, Friday, 8 February 2013 14:28 (eleven years ago) link

Just a quick question to those there last night, did they play "Transistor" live or was it a playback like "Voice of energy"? It's one of my favourite Kraftwerk pieces just because it's so different to almost anything else they have produced, and evocative of the first time I heard it (in the back of a car, half asleep on a motorway at night, counting the lights until we reached home). I never thought they would play that song live, ever, and I was just wondering. Thanks in advance.

I dont know why but that track gives me a 60's Star Trek vibe

Never mind what the show was like, where can we see a picture of Doran's handknitted Autobahn jumper??

ok that rules

willem, Friday, 8 February 2013 15:30 (eleven years ago) link

It does, I saw the guy with the Man Machine one you mentioned, that was fantastic too.

MaresNest, Friday, 8 February 2013 15:35 (eleven years ago) link

Hah I totally didn't notice that re the photo, good spot Doran!

Neil S, Friday, 8 February 2013 17:26 (eleven years ago) link

I saw someone who wasn't you wearing one at Supersonic last year.

Troughton-masked Replicant (aldo), Friday, 8 February 2013 18:58 (eleven years ago) link

Are you sure it wasn't me? I've got a massive beard and look about ten years older since becoming a dad. Either way I was at Supersonic wearing mine last year.

Doran, Friday, 8 February 2013 19:18 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah. The guy was, and don't take this the wrong way, much thinner than you. His beard was about the same length as yours in that picture too.

Troughton-masked Replicant (aldo), Friday, 8 February 2013 20:12 (eleven years ago) link

The cheeky fucker. Bitin' my style.

Doran, Friday, 8 February 2013 20:29 (eleven years ago) link

I think it might also have been a round neck and not a v neck.

Troughton-masked Replicant (aldo), Friday, 8 February 2013 20:46 (eleven years ago) link

To be fair, it's not a difficult pattern to work out with graph paper. The Neubauten one is taking a lot longer.
