Belated epiphany in Slate weekly post-mortem:
While I take pleasure in the show, and find it brilliantly funny at times, I am increasingly realizing a problem I have with it: I find very few relatable characters and moments.
You think, Slate writer?

Anyone who can't relate to horrible cruel fuckups needs to get real w themselves.

i like the notion of GIRLS as the bleaker, more nihilistic antidote to GAME OF THRONES but nah.
that said, if you needed to describe HBO Original Programming in three words, "horrible cruel fuckups" would do it admirably

(obv if you needed to do it in four words it would be "horrible cruel fuckups, boobs"

Horrible, cruel boobs

I don't know how you can "take pleasure" in something and find it "brilliantly funny" while being unable to relate to the characters or situation.
― jed_, Sunday, 3 February 2013 22:22 (eleven years ago) link
Well I suppose it's possible with something like dumb or dumber but not with a show like this. I don't see how you could laugh without relating.

Gratuitous boobage

Not that I'm complaining. The end of ep 1 was basically Lena saying "fuck me"

Yeah, I'm like does she really have to be naked in every episode, but then the perv in me doesn't mind.

I like to think that every time an HBO exec asks for more boobs LD writes another boobs scene for herself, like she's straight up daring someone to tell her they are really after Allison Williams' boobs.
― Women, Fire, and Dangerous Zings (silby), Monday, 4 February 2013 01:09 (eleven years ago) link
that would make it so much more acceptable.
― s.clover, Monday, 4 February 2013 01:33 (eleven years ago) link
I don't think Alison will ever show. But then again I thought the same about Jemima and was wrong there

i think it's clear from the way her sex scenes so far were filmed that it's not gonna happen

all my golden girls moments with my friends have been in bathtubs. it's TOTALLY a thing we do.

Ok, I agree with you guys that it was gratuitous, but I have had female friendships where there was that kind of nbd intimacy. I liked it just in that it was a moment of two girls being totally comfortable around each other & also it showed Hannah actually being kind for a change.

Uh why are you sitting in this TV thing? Your character seems to have sense wtf are you doing with this idiot? You are being fired right now.

oh right tv thing
At first i took that Damien Hirst line as evidence she knew what she was talking about but apparently it's just something she knows to say in order to flirt with artists.

Sorry, i skipped 3 and 4 and am just catching up w them. Don't how much more I'll be watching this show. I'm sure there are plenty of shows of transgressive 20-something girls doing coke and dancing at a club. Cool that these characters are finding themselves and going thru trials and tribulations and stuff but maybe i am just too old for this show. It definitely sums up LIVING THROUGH YOUR 20s in that it's full of seemingly momentous exploratory stuff that really doesn't mean anything and that realization very very very slowly dawning on you.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 4 February 2013 19:55 (eleven years ago) link
xpost emilys: oh the moment itself, emotionally, was totally otm. it was just funny to me that it was in a bathtub.

Marnie seemed to enjoy texting her friend that she just had sex much more than the actual sex.

Eh, the next episode. This show is like watching people punch themselves.

― Women, Fire, and Dangerous Zings (silby), Monday, 4 February 2013 20:29 (eleven years ago) link
No, I'm so glad I'm not in my 20s anymore.
This show is like, if i really still wanted to go out and hang out and make the scene and get involved in everyone's drama, and then have all these stories that i really don't care about illustrated visually. I'm sure if you are 25 or something, this show is like THE ZEITGEIST or something, but for me it's like being sober at a party where everyone else is drunk.

I feel like the people that will enjoy this show the most are the ones asking "What was that cool song at the end of the last episode? Wonderwall? Is that what it's called?"
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 4 February 2013 20:38 (eleven years ago) link
I don't get drunk and I hate parties but I still Identify with a lot of this show, especially the emotional drama and the self-sabotage. I'm not too far removed from those things, and college, and I'll probably find myself wrapped up in them again once I have more friends out here. Seems inevitable.

I was just saying the other night that the thing that strikes (and annoys) me most about this show is how damn dramatic every single person and thing is. I mean I remember being 25 and I don't ever remember it being like that. It's tiring just to watch! I'm not really fighter though. I don't know.

I stopped trying to watch it through a lens of 'oh this is being 25' becuase that made me v depressed and angry and confused--- I just enjoy it for the weird comedy and funny lines and occasional nice moments between characters

Eh, found this ep a bit whiny -- they're starting to seem more like moodswingy late teens than 20somethings. Groffin Dunne was A+ though
