Funny, I kicked off the "Rolling Worst Songs of 2013" thread with these guys. Now that I've heard the whole album, I realize I could've taken my pick of just about any of them.

and that song was... "On Blue Mountain"! haha

i'm pretty sure this band sucks but it will take some time to confirm

I wish they didn't, but they are growing on me.

i haven't been able to wrap my head around this yet
― ciderpress, Saturday, 2 February 2013 07:39 (eleven years ago) link
What's so bad about them? I'm only just listening to clips on itunes now.
― Evan, Saturday, 2 February 2013 20:29 (eleven years ago) link
They sound like a cross between The Strokes and The Monkees.
― Prisoner: Cell Block J/K (snoball), Saturday, 2 February 2013 20:39 (eleven years ago) link
never heard of them but that is a pretty good bandname

Wonder why it is that bands that get compared to Lilys never sound like Lilys? I want more bands like Lilys

Here's one, though not the brand of Lilys we are talking about in the Foxygen thread most likely:

for me, this is the most confounding album of 2013 so far. i can't quite commit to liking it or, y'know, not liking it.
i definitely like it less as it goes along. the final third or so has some winky ironic bullshit on it that always leaves a bad taste in my ears. but the easygoing jams in the first half are alright.
the fact that i am hesitating to put it on my running list of good stuff for 2013 probably means i should stop trying with it.
― alpine static, Thursday, 7 March 2013 21:38 (eleven years ago) link
A seriously great record. I listen to it tons.

Yes. We know how you feel about it. It's cool. You're wrong.
― chromecassettes, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 22:29 (eleven years ago) link
well i ended up liking this record after my initial violently negative reaction. music is weird.
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 18:17 (ten years ago) link
I really, really do not like this band or this album, I'm afraid.
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 18:20 (ten years ago) link
I'm not against people having their influences, but the chorus to 'On Blue Mountain' is too close to 'Suspicious Minds' for comfort... and then the way it blatantly goes into that 6/8 section... JUST LIKE 'SUSPICIOUS MINDS' does!
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 20 June 2013 20:37 (ten years ago) link
I mean, as far as I can tell pretty much every melodic line on the album is lifted from some not-too-obscure source, usually pretty directly. It bugged me at first, but I stopped caring after a while.
― dlp9001, Thursday, 20 June 2013 23:40 (ten years ago) link
Doesn't bother me at all. Just like it didn't with Brian Jonestown Massacre or Pavement or Led Zeppelin or probably a hundred other bands I've enjoyed at some point.
Still love the record.
― chromecassettes, Thursday, 20 June 2013 23:54 (ten years ago) link
The Quietus hated this record so much but the one song I heard I thought was okay really. It was like a mishmash of lots of sixties songs but I was getting a sort of early st etienne vibe off it and it didn't sound as derivative as the descriptions I'd read, at least no more than any band who might be influenced by, say, 80s new wave or seventies hard rock or whatever.

Wow, some of the descriptions of this record here make it sound kind of awful but after actually listening to it I am really liking a lot of it. No Destruction has a nice blonde on blonde/vu thing going and sounds like what I always wanted bjm or maybe beachwood sparks to sound like
― dell (del), Sunday, 13 October 2013 00:44 (ten years ago) link
It's incredible how fast this has come from being one of my top ten of 2013 to one becoming one of my all-time favorite records. Killer.
― chromecassettes, Sunday, 13 October 2013 02:22 (ten years ago) link
i like "san francisco" a lot.
― Treeship, Sunday, 13 October 2013 03:36 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, the little "that's okay..." response backing vocals really make that song afaiac
― dell (del), Sunday, 13 October 2013 03:42 (ten years ago) link
the switch from "that's okay i was bored anyway" to "that's okay i was born in LA" gives me chills even though i am a lifelong east coaster. great lyrics.
― Treeship, Sunday, 13 October 2013 03:47 (ten years ago) link
also want to put in a word for "make it known." i think the sort of jerky, start-stop quality is a thing this song shares with lots of things from the 60s that many other "retro" sounding contemporary bands don't usually have so much.

haha these guys aren't subtle about it are they?
― Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 11 September 2014 12:00 (nine years ago) link
is it supposed to be a clever, recontextualizing of Lowlands or is it just a ripoff?
― niels, Thursday, 11 September 2014 12:21 (nine years ago) link
I have a sick admiration for these guys, considering they seemed poised for implosion like six months ago and instead released a thoroughly ridiculous 85-minute sophomore album that's...actually pretty listenable?
― Simon H., Saturday, 18 October 2014 20:37 (nine years ago) link
I enjoy these guys but man they seem to put a huge amount of effort into sounding super-sloppy, it's uncanny. there's a slapdash haze to everything.
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 17:10 (nine years ago) link
Never cared for Foxygen's studio stuff and I think the Dylan ripoff is just lame (if it's meant to be funny I don't find it funny) BUT just saw them live this weekend and what a great show they put on! Totally won me over.
Think they we're nine people on the stage, three chorus girls all 60s dressed up, lead singer constantly jumping around kicking into the air, falling down. All theater. They did a mock start of "Let It Be" as an encore stopping after 5 seconds, found it hilarious. They also had fake arguments and at one point for some reason the rhythm guitarist was holding a hand of cards and lead singer was kind of telling him off like, "dude we talked abt this you can't play cards on stage". I dunno, was really drunk but surely enjoyed myself.
― niels, Monday, 18 May 2015 08:45 (eight years ago) link
new record is again.... very different. more rundgren, more musical theatre - https://open.spotify.com/album/2gLCtAv2b62c5pvgxQhjjM
co-sign on the very funny live shows. last time i saw them they did a fake breakup half way through the show, then played the big single off the last album over the PA while nobody was on stage, and then came back on and played a really bad beatles cover. good times.

"How Can You Really" is one of my favorite songs of the decade--might be #1. Finally caught up with Hang. I think it's supposed to be a Bowie tribute, I don't know. It sounds more like Rocky Horror Picture Show outtakes. What a monstrosity.

Clemenza otm in both statements above. Part of me hope Hang is so bad on purpose. Otherwise....

"we are the 21st century ambassadors of peace & magic" is one of my fav indie records of the decade now, weirdly. the others are okay to bad, their spell only works for so long before you're listening to a pumpkin
