B&S are the ultimate "nice to sit in the park" act. R. Kelly is not, so it will be funny watching perform for people sitting in a park.

I've seen R. Kelly two, maybe three times, and he's been not so hot every time. One of those cats, sort of like current Prince, who wastes a lot of oxygen boasting that he's going to play all his hits, and then does just that ... in a ten minute medley. And then he sings a song about a majestic eagle bringing the troops home or something. But I know folks who have seen him focused, too, so who knows what the Chicago summer night will bring out of him. I'm trying to think if he's ever played a large, open-air sort of fest locally. Certainly the folks at the Union Park pool will have an awesome nightswim soundtrack.

80 percent of his songs are about this

Maybe I'm just slow on the uptake, but when did Pitchfork introduce the ability to look up reviews and articles by staff? Is this relatively new?
― MarkoP, Thursday, 14 February 2013 18:25 (eleven years ago) link
Noticed that only recently too so I assume it's somewhat new. Pretty nifty.

I'm sorry, when did it become common practice to switch 'release' with 'share'? It really annoys me. I understand if an artist is 'sharing' a video....cos the video is online and they are sharing a link. But sharing a record or a CD? That doesn't make any sense. It just sounds so stupid, and so much like some weak blog-age marketing lingo.

What did they refer to a record "share date" or something?
― Evan, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:47 (eleven years ago) link
No, it's just pretty much every announcement. For instance
Here's one of the biggest Record Store Day announcements we've gotten so far this year: David Bowie is releasing his first two The Next Day singles on a limited edition 7". According to his Facebook page, "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)", which is being shared for the first time next week, will be backed by "Where Are We Now?". Record Store Day is on April 20.That's not the only RSD-exclusive Bowie release on tap-- he's also sharing a Bowie 1965! EP and a "Drive-In Saturday" picture disc.

feel like this is more common with promo tracks in advance of a record, or free downloads?
xp
― queeple qua queeple (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:50 (eleven years ago) link
ok that's dumb
That quote is saying the record has a release date, but that first track is being digitally "shared" next week. It looks like it in that case is just being used for distinction? Maybe less long-winded than "being digitally released for the first time next week, will be backed on physical release by 'Where Are We Now?'"
― Evan, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 16:22 (eleven years ago) link
i don't think there's anything behind this other than "we need to use a word other than 'released' sometimes"
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 16:45 (eleven years ago) link
I meant it sounds like fb speak or something. Like Bowie is your fb friend and on that day he is clicking 'share' and giving you the link to his video. And somehow doing the same thing with tactile vinyl records on RSD.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:03 (eleven years ago) link
In the context of FB as the medium it is tough to convey the meaning without those FB terms, to be fair.

it's not so much dumb, but considering they gave it a mildly positive score the Parenthetical Girls review did a great job of making me loathe a band I've never heard.

oh man, i forgot about the epic morrissey vs. staples center blood feud that's been gripping the nation all week as well. i think my annoyance at the jimmy kimmel thing was enabled by the staples center coverage. i can take multiple stories about either feud, but put them together in the same week and i'm gonna have to type things in all caps on the internet

Yeah and the updates "Staples center NOT actually vegetarian for show" "UPDATE: wait actually is"
Nobody cares.
"Morrissey SLAMS Jimmy Kimmel..." I didn't read that as a slam at all. Just whining about Duck Dynasty with statistics.

i mean i agree with you in the general sense but i promise you that PLENTY of people really care about morrissey's bullshit, which is why this shit is being covered everywhere like it's 9/11

on second thought, it is pretty amazing that morrissey somehow got into a feud with Jimmy Kimmel, the Duck Brothers or whatever, and the Staples Center, all in the same week
