congratulations (n/a), Friday, 1 February 2013 21:51 (eleven years ago) link

R Kelly plays Chicago like 4 times a year. You could have gone to see him if you cared in a non-ironic fashion.

The last time R. Kelly played, about a month ago, it was at the shit-ass Arie Crown, and it involved women in cages, iirc.

Also iirc, the last time Feist played here, beside the fork fest, was in 2011, at the Riv. I want to say before that it was the Vic, both smaller than B&S, who last played the Chi Theatre, preceded by the Riv, but before that I want to say the Congress. They really haven't played Chicago much, but neither has Feist, I don't think.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 February 2013 21:59 (eleven years ago) link

Man its like my post didn't exist.

Feist has also played Ravinia at least once.

I saw your post, just saying I don't think she played the Riv twice. But I totally forgot about the, er, Rav!

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 February 2013 22:08 (eleven years ago) link

gonna make big bucks by smuggling in no-doz and jolt and selling them right before the B&S set

Have you ever seen Belle and Sebastian live?

I'm excited about these headliners b/c I'm guessing they'll all be really great *entertainers* in a live festival setting. More so, for instance, than Animal Collective or Vampire Weekend or the National.

B&S's most recent appearance was at the 3,600 capacity Chicago Theater (they played the Riv in 2006).

In 2003 they headlined the Congress, which is about the same capacity as the Chicago Theater.

Have you ever seen Belle and Sebastian live?

no. i don't like them.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 1 February 2013 22:20 (eleven years ago) link

I think the big dif from Feist is that B&S have fans who would fly to see them. Maybe Bjork, too, if she is not doing an extensive tour, but B&S for sure. They really don't play much.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 February 2013 22:21 (eleven years ago) link

The fact that B&S aren't supporting an album is probably best for everyone. Going to a B&S concert is basically wishing they play as many mid-90s songs as possible.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 1 February 2013 22:22 (eleven years ago) link

eh they could be supporting an album by the summer

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Friday, 1 February 2013 22:25 (eleven years ago) link

Fingers crossed no!

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 February 2013 22:26 (eleven years ago) link

no. i don't like them.

I guess my point is that their live show is much more razzle-dazzle than you might expect. (Especially if your idea of them is rooted in the twee/amateurish stylings of their early material.)

jaymc, Friday, 1 February 2013 22:27 (eleven years ago) link

well now I'm imagining a Britney/Janet/Madonna-esque choreographed dance extravaganza to "Legal Man"

B&S are the ultimate "nice to sit in the park" act. R. Kelly is not, so it will be funny watching perform for people sitting in a park.

buzza, Saturday, 2 February 2013 03:47 (eleven years ago) link

I've seen R. Kelly two, maybe three times, and he's been not so hot every time. One of those cats, sort of like current Prince, who wastes a lot of oxygen boasting that he's going to play all his hits, and then does just that ... in a ten minute medley. And then he sings a song about a majestic eagle bringing the troops home or something. But I know folks who have seen him focused, too, so who knows what the Chicago summer night will bring out of him. I'm trying to think if he's ever played a large, open-air sort of fest locally. Certainly the folks at the Union Park pool will have an awesome nightswim soundtrack.

80 percent of his songs are about this

Maybe I'm just slow on the uptake, but when did Pitchfork introduce the ability to look up reviews and articles by staff? Is this relatively new?

MarkoP, Thursday, 14 February 2013 18:25 (eleven years ago) link

Noticed that only recently too so I assume it's somewhat new. Pretty nifty.

I'm sorry, when did it become common practice to switch 'release' with 'share'? It really annoys me. I understand if an artist is 'sharing' a video....cos the video is online and they are sharing a link. But sharing a record or a CD? That doesn't make any sense. It just sounds so stupid, and so much like some weak blog-age marketing lingo.
