Hi dudes - I'm playing a real money tourney on my day off :) Haven't had much luck lately - play tourneys are easy as all you need is patience - although I was called a pussy who shouldn't be allowed to play throught my last game! (I came 2nd, seems reasonable to me). Still only finished in the money in one real-money tourney, so I've still got a lot to learn.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 14 March 2005 15:25 (nineteen years ago) link

i can teach you but i'd have to charge

ken c (ken c), Monday, 14 March 2005 15:28 (nineteen years ago) link

p.s. who's up for another game soon? i quite fancy a tournament game with all of us in it. but whatever's cool.

late tonight is good, or tomorrow night all night.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 14 March 2005 15:29 (nineteen years ago) link

God I fell apart at the end there. Just made mistake after mistake, then tried to bluff a win on a piar of 6s and got righteously fucked. This is happening too often - I think I am frightened of the blinds increasing to scary amounts.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 14 March 2005 15:39 (nineteen years ago) link

So I played a bit Friday night in the $2-$5nl room. Mostly losing blinds with garbage for a while. Some fuckwad went all in every hand before the flop everytime! Finally I got dealt pocket bitches....i call his all in. I hit 4 of a kind. His $75 was mine. FUCKO. I may play a bit this afternoon after my dr's appt if your still online mark. maybe we can hop in a tourney...i'll aim you.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Monday, 14 March 2005 15:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Chris, I've just come 5th and 9th in two tourneys and I think I'd be too soft a target today. Fuck.

(but AIM me anyway - as I'm not at work I'm not at my PC all the time)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 14 March 2005 15:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I finished 9th in a $5 tourney this weekend (out of 300+ entrants)! I was chip leader for a good 45 minutes (out of 3+ hours of play)! I got hosed by pocket Jacks!

I've been cleaning up on the $.25-.50 tables, even as they've been cleaning me up - started w/ $30 yesterday, went down to $6, then ended up w/ $46. And I also played in some tourneys, too, where I was teh suck.

I'd love to take the big-chip cockfarmer playing 4-2 offsuit non-blinded and pop him in the mouth with a shotgun. You should NOT get 3 4s from that crap. Nor should you play 5-7 offsuit and get a straight on the river! (Sez the guy that was riding the river like a white water rafter last night.) (I also won w/ pocket 9s against 2 all-in guys w/ A-J off-suit.)

Yeah, I'm part Italian. Can you tell? :)

Worst suck-out ever - going all in w/ pocket Queens & no face cards on the flop against A-Q, and getting beat by a STRAIGHT. Almost as bad as the time I had two pair, and was housed by a flopped / turned / river'd 4-card FLUSH.

I've been playing every day, & I might need a break just to appreciate my recent good fortune (& get something done away from the PC). However, I'll probably be on, as I am weak, and need to pay off my vig, so lemme know what the plan is (on thread, preferably).

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Sigh. Why am I so bad? I might be up for playing tonight, though I really don't want to lose my whole $50 which looks totally likely.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Hi dere!

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Me and Ken did a tourney together last night - I came 2nd, which slightly resurrected a terribly disappointing poker-playing day. I always fail horribly at the last - I invariably have like $13,000 to their $2,000, but in three hands they completely turn me over.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:27 (nineteen years ago) link

I was playing real-money tables last night, & was up $27, but ended up down $10 overall (due to playing 2 $5 single-table tourneys where I got jobbed) (some fuctard going all-in against me - I had pocket Qs, he had pocket 9s - lucked out w/ a 9 on the flop, & then said "later beeotch" as I was leaving the table) (stupid program closed the window before I could reply w/ "eat my fuc").

Also, really, you big-stacked bastards lucking into hands because you play EVERY SINGLE HAND even if you have 7-2 offsuit - blow a Bunsen burner three times. (I say that because I am teh jealous, of course.) Also, if I run into any other reckless dorks that raise $5 on crap flops when my hand is crap enough to make me wary of playing said hand, they will also be invited to suck on some natural gas.

It's not like I want the poker gods to continually bless me w/ last-minute saves & pocket As every hand - just don't switch from blessings to pissings at will every 3 days. I can only withstand so much whiplash.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:35 (nineteen years ago) link

ah the joys of online poker. i started reading doyle brunsons "super/system 2" last night. FEAR ME NOW.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:38 (nineteen years ago) link

OH NO A SYSTEM!

My system seems to be, "play your As & Ks if they don't raise, slow play non-face-carded pocket pairs, scare folks off if you think you got deez nutz, raise if the flop is teh crap and you have top card, and wait to get jobbed by the river".

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Also: "fuc a J-4 suited, as I get that more times than I get gas after meals."

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:43 (nineteen years ago) link

System for online tournaments: play tight, play tight, realise that you've played so tight that your stack is inherently worthless against those who bothered playing hands, go all in, get beaten on the river.

Never fails.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:48 (nineteen years ago) link

i wouldn't play a j-4 suited if i was getting a blowjob at the same time.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:52 (nineteen years ago) link

If I was getting a blowjob, I'd hope it wouldn't be at a poker table of any kind. I can barely multitask as is.

Also, Dom's system was my system for the first couple of weeks - oh, if I had a nickel for every time I folded K-2 and saw two Ks come up.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, you live and learn David.

So, how often do you like to make a big play then? Say there's ten seated at a table, how often do you need to make a chipmove that's gonna have people sitting up and taking notice?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:15 (nineteen years ago) link

I was lucking out a lot in recent play, as I'd raise pre-flop when I had a suited set w/ a facecard, or a pretty high pocket pair, and then the flop would totally be in my favor, so my next raise (usually about 1/2 the pot or greater) would frighten all the folks that paid for the flop. And then, once in a while, I played some crap (like a suited 8-4, if blinded) and then scared folks off with a big raise when the flop was crap.

Then I came across folks that didn't give a shit, and just played regardless of what I did, which is where my strategery was submarined. Also, I wasn't getting any breaks - my A-K suited would be grouped w/ a 7-4-9 off-suit (w/ some jerk holding pocket 7s), and my lowish pocket pairs would run into Q-Q-6 (w/ some jerk holding the 3rd Q). Stupid jerks.

Or course, now that I've told you all this, I can never play w/ you ever again for phear of this knowledge being used against me.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, according to the super/system which is the bible of poker books. The advice is to play fairly loose at a 10 seat table at first. try to buy people out of pots. play aggressive at first. then mix it up. play it tighter. also keep an eye on the players that use the "speed" buttons to check, fold.....there's an online tell right there. Chances are if they use the speed button they have something. Pockets or suited connectors. if you have someone who is constantly giving you pots by folding keep attacking him..eventually you'll have all his chips. of course try not to take this advice to heart in online games....better off in real sit downs.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:27 (nineteen years ago) link

My biggest problem was falling in love w/ the idea that I could bully anyone of out the pot, even if my hand was subpar. I got really reckless, & very stubborn - I don't care if you're all in and there's four hearts on the table and I have the J of hearts, I'm paying to see your heart! And then the dude would have the A of hearts, and I'd be out $15.

Seems like the biggest problem w/ aggressive scare-tactic betting is not knowing when to get over yrself and just step away from a losing situation - it's better to turn tail after the turn than see the river through & show yrself to be full of it.

& also, & this seems really stupid to say but it's probably worth saying anyway, it helps to have the cards - during one stretch, when I was really feeling my testosterone, I was getting decent playable hands (Q-6, K-4, 5-5), and playing them like they were King Shit Nutz hands, and getting burned by unfavorable flops & my own half-ass kamikaze betting style (i.e. betting just enough to look like a sucker and simultaneously lose 3/4ths of my stack).

[xpost]

Ha - I use the "speed" buttons usually because I'm either playing 2 games @ once & don't want to be bothered all the time by YOUR TURN reminders, or I'm doing something non-poker related. Motherlover, to play in a tournament where the guy before me doesn't treat a $20 bet like an essay test every damn time. JUST CALL, FOLD, OR RAISE, YOU SLOTH.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I tend to be inconsistent intentionally when I play w/r/t my tactics - problems only really come up when I start doing it UNintentionally, when I get flustered. I am too easy to bully sometimes.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 18:05 (nineteen years ago) link

i wouldn't play a j-4 suited if i was getting a blowjob at the same time.
ditto it'd be too hard to concentrate

Is it possible to watch games in progress without playing? I'd like to get a feel for pace of play, the degree of trash talking, etc., before jumping in the deep end.

Curious George Finds the Ether Bottle (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 18:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes it is - you'll still have to register though. The trash talking is mostly minimal, but watching the pace, style etc. is a very good idea.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 18:28 (nineteen years ago) link

also keep an eye on the players that use the "speed" buttons to check, fold.....there's an online tell right there. Chances are if they use the speed button they have something

if they use the "speed" button to fold.. surely that's a tell-tale sign that they DON'T have something!!

Unless they WANT you to think that. "Ha ha ha! I'll fold Big Slick, and make them think I folded 9-2! Ha ha ha! Now I can play 9-2 w/out impugnity! Ha ha ha! Reraise before the flop, bitchz!"

I like doing tourneys with other ILXors!

I came 2nd last night for the third time. Yet to win one though. Probably about $20 down on tounreys so far.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 21 March 2005 12:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Finally won my first tournament (single table, $5 + $.50 obv) at the... 19th attempt? So I'm still down on tourneys overall, but not by an obscene amount.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 25 March 2005 23:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Congrats, Mark!

I won $79 today, between finishing 3rd in a single-table tourney ($10), and getting really good cards at the real-money table ($69). I'm now playing real-money w/ "steve albini" (& 8 other folks). Up $6, too.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 26 March 2005 01:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Nice one, Dave - I think you have more bollocks than I do for ring games. I also always always always lose like $30 before I hit a run of form, and seeing as I only have $27 in my account that's something I can't afford to do!

Yay, another win today, but three no-scores too, so only $3 up. How's everyone else doing? Chris? Ken? Julia? Or is some other fad in fashion now?

i've been playing chess a lot

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 27 March 2005 22:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Ooh, pokerroom.com gave me a $10 bonus after I racked up a certain number of points! That's nice.

So far: 24 tournaments; 2 x 1st; 4 x 2nd; 1 x 3rd; 17 x no place.

(I can't really deal with chess - it requires a level of skill/thought that is beyond my willing)

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 27 March 2005 22:40 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm on a poker sabbatical for a few weeks whilst I stack enough sterling to hit the tables with a renewed vigour. I may try playing in a suit next time.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 27 March 2005 22:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Hehe.

In my last two tourneys I've come 1st and 3rd, which means I am now in the black after twenty-seven $5 + $0.50 tournaments. This makes me very, very happy, this profit of, I think, two whole dollars.

What do people think of multi-table tourneys? Ever really worth entering, especially if you don't have like eight hours free?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:34 (nineteen years ago) link

i like the multi table tourneys....as evident by me winning $800 big ones last night. I couldn't believe it, i was getting all the cards. people just got scared because i was hitting everything, i could throw out a bet with a shit hand and everyone folded. i was proud and a wee bit drunk.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Thursday, 31 March 2005 11:50 (nineteen years ago) link

i even hit four of a kind last night..four 9's. i was otm.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Thursday, 31 March 2005 11:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Nice going, Chris. I might have to give it a go. I tried a bit of play poker in my lunch break, and it's like decaf coffee, or talcum powder heroin. It's just not the same.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I've actually capped myself on the $$$$ I throw into my PokerRoom kitty every week - it's way too tempting to, say, join a table w/ $10 dollars, get two pair, go all in, get beat by a guy w/ pocket 4s w/ a 4 on the turn, and then throw in ANOTHER $10, and then get beat again, and then etc etc etc. I should try Mark's strategy (playing the single-table tourneys till I'm satisfied), though it'll take me a loooooong while to get back in the black (well, about 20-25 3rd place finishes @ the $5 tables).

I like the multi-table tourneys, because it's longer, there's more of an investment, there's more chance of a big payout, there's a sense of being part of SOMETHING BIG, and the one time I finished in the money in a tourney (after almost 3 hours of play), it felt like I had, um, beat death? Even if it was only for $29. I DID IT MANG.

Also, I seem to have 8 hours to kill all the time, even though I'm working full-time & writing on the side - usually, I just throw on some MP3s, get a glass of water & maybe some snacky foods, and ready my cursor over the FOLD button for the next hour+. (If I make it out of the first hour, I consider it a moral victory.) (If I make it through Hour Two, I consider it sheer luck.)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks Dom - that looks fascinating, but maybe a bit overcomplex and, I reckon, relies on a certain level of talent.

Having said that, after spazzing out of a tourney in 10th and, with my 2nd attempt, getting down to $400 (notional) with no-one else under £1k, I managed to pull of an unlikely win, which has had the effect of raising my account to a record $67! Admittedly $10 of this was pokerroom.com's bonus, but hell.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 31 March 2005 23:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Thinks are still going well - up to $98 after a 3rd and a 1st last night. Though thw in was sullied by the guy in 2nd place losing his connection - in the end the blinds did for him, all I did was sat there and collected. But still, $25.

(I suspect when Sgs is in the States I might enter a few multi-table tourneys - then I won't be disturbing anyone if I stay up till 5am playing...)

How are you all doing? Y'all give us an update!
