Wow, the photographer who snapped that pic must've been lucky to catch them during those ten minutes!

Tuomas, Monday, 14 January 2008 09:00 (sixteen years ago) link

The pic is from 1989. Nirvana, at the time, consisted of Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Jason Everman and Chad Channing. Maybe not a very "representative" pic, but I didn't pay enough attention when picking it.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 14 January 2008 10:12 (sixteen years ago) link

wow the right answer for once. and thensome.

pisces, Monday, 14 January 2008 12:50 (sixteen years ago) link

The right answer would have been "All Of Us" or "The Story Of Simon Simopath". The right American answer remains "Nevermind". So wrong on all accounts.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 14 January 2008 19:38 (sixteen years ago) link

if by "American" you mean "everyone in the world except Geir and the families of that earlier Nirvana" than yeah

J0hn D., Monday, 14 January 2008 20:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah Geir only americans voted In Utero..

Bleach is kinda becoming my favorite in my old age

I replayed all three of these for the first time since freshman year of college the other day... and they all hold up pretty well.

Bleach has a really strong Side A but kinda falls apart in the second half imo.

You know, it is kind of cool how a family member of one 60s Nirvana guy actually went to ILX and voted in the poll. :)

Sounds very solid all the way through to me.

Bleach is a really ugly album, in a good way

In Utero winning this poll in a runaway=LOL, too.

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 13:38 (thirteen years ago) link

In Utero was my fave for years. I probably voted for it in this poll.

A brownish area with points (chap), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 13:46 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't think I've ever listened to Bleach all the way through, but In Utero is my favorite album of the 90s...

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 13:52 (thirteen years ago) link

to me it's the least interesting of Nirvana studio albums. many solid tracks to be sure, but to me it doesn't have the passion or quality of prior recordings (including Incesticide)

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 13:56 (thirteen years ago) link

(and yes I realize Incesticide isn't a studio album per se)

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 13:56 (thirteen years ago) link

You've just described my opinion of Nevermind.

A brownish area with points (chap), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 13:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Nevermind was the best of both worlds, man. strong poppy hooks which Bleach lacked (though wasn't striving for), but plenty of 'noisy' riffs to keep the purists at bay.

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 13:58 (thirteen years ago) link

also don't really think there's a bad track on Nevermind whereas there's quite a few I skip past on In Utero ("Dumb" and "All Apologies" being two of them).

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 13:59 (thirteen years ago) link

To my my ears the songs on it are a lot more samey and formulaic than on their other records, and the production isn't scuzzy or messy enough for a band like Nirvana.

xpost - love both those tracks!

A brownish area with points (chap), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I also skip Dumb and All Apologies, but the rest of the album is so great that In Utero is still easily their best album

peter in montreal, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:03 (thirteen years ago) link

I guess I'll have to agree to disagree there. I don't think I ever played it more than three times. granted I'm not a huge Nirvana listener anymore, but even when I was Bleach, Incesticide, and Nevermind always got more listens from me.

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:04 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean, when i was 13, all i listened to was Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Talking Heads, Red Hot Chili Pepz, Ramones, Primus, Breeders, Ministry, etc—and Nevermind was pretty much the center of this universe for me.

Now that I'm 30 and are more into Husker Du, Wipers, Melvins, Jesus Lizard, Throbbing Gristle, Swans, etc—Bleach just sounds more like a part of my world. Revisiting it recently was like seeing an old girlfriend that got super pretty. Also, I remember hearing it in a bar once with a fellow musician, and he turns to me and asks "Who's this covering Nirvana?" and I was like, "It's Nirvana." Because neither of us ever really noticed that Chad and Dale play double kick pedal all over this thing, which was pretty fucking gauche in 90s alt-rock.

i love you but i've chosen markers (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:05 (thirteen years ago) link

San Te are you one of those guys that thinks that In Utero is 'too mellow'?

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Not really, I mean, Nevermind had "Polly", "On a Plain", and "Something in the Way", which I loved. Maybe 'too restrained', but even then, I mean, there's not a 'template' that I need to follow to enjoy Nirvana either.

the songwriting just didn't grab me as much. I would say "Milk It" is my favorite from the album, except that live versions have always been way better than the studio version.

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:08 (thirteen years ago) link

the songwriting, and the lyrics esp., is I think In Utero's biggest strong point...

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:10 (thirteen years ago) link

"Lounge Act" and "On a Plain" are the two Nevermind tracks I still find myself humming at odd moments.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:12 (thirteen years ago) link

just realised that nirvana's albums are mostly quite similar in my mind, in that there are a load of tracks which i remember how they go from the beginning to the end, and a bunch that I can only remember the name of. So Nevermind has Lithium, On A Plain, Polly, Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Territorial, Come As You Are etc, but also has Lounge Act and Drain You which I'm pretty fuzzy on. Same with In Utero, but even more - lots of great memorable tracks but I couldn't tell you how Very Ape or Milk It go. Plus I never liked Rape Me or Heart Shaped Box or Pennyroyal Tea that much - they seemed too slow and/or angsty. Not much fun.

These days the Nirvana album I'd reach for out of choice is Incesticide. Lots of fun and manages to show many different sides of Nirvana, from the poppy (Sliver, Molly's Lips), to the rocky (Aneurysm, Dive) to the plain noisy and bizarre (Hairspray Queen).

village idiot (dog latin), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:12 (thirteen years ago) link

I love Lounge Act

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Lounge Act and On a Plain are both fantastic, yeah.

A brownish area with points (chap), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:15 (thirteen years ago) link

And the last four tracks on Incesticide are all awesome in totally different ways.

A brownish area with points (chap), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Actually, Lounge Act is the one that goes "Bum da-da Dum da-da Dum Duh-Dum Da-da-da" so yeah, I know it. And Drain You is about babies. So I lied about Nevermind, but then I have had it in my music collection since the dinosaurs died out so I should remember these songs by now.

village idiot (dog latin), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Aneurysm is the best Nirvana song too.

village idiot (dog latin), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Does anyone else share my love for Aero Zeppelin?

A brownish area with points (chap), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:18 (thirteen years ago) link

xp Can't really listen much to the back half of Incesticide (aside from Aneurysm and Downer)(& Downer wz on Bleach)...surprising to me that you would dismiss Heart Shaped Box and Pennyroyal Tea as "not much fun" but then fuck with the likes of Aero Zeppelin and Big Long Now...

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:19 (thirteen years ago) link

(xp to dog latin, LOL chap, no I think Aero Zeppelin is one of their worst songs...)

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Heart Shaped Box was one of my favorites on Utero, I'll say that much

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Lounge Act, Drain You, Milk It, and Very Ape are all def. Nirvana POX for me

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:23 (thirteen years ago) link

(well maybe not Milk It, though I love that song something fierce)

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Incesticide does have at least one of my favorite Nirvana songs of all time--Been a Son

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:25 (thirteen years ago) link

"Verse Chorus Verse" would make my POX.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Even in His Youth is pretty good too; not quite as good as Oh the Guilt or I Hate Myself or Verse Chorus Verse, but I still like it lots...
