one month passes...
God you people just don't understand...I've really got total JANET FEVER like never before last weekend and this one. But only Control & Rhythm Nation, the rest is shite. I have toyed with the idea of Velvet Rope but I'm afraid of it, I think. Maybe I'll change my mind later. Her first album from '82 is dull as ditchwater, I'm afraid, despite the great last song "Come Give Your Love To Me". The album often sounds like a very pale imitation of Michael circa Off The Wall. Well she was young, I guess we'll cut her a break.
I watched the entire videos from Control & Rhythm Nation last night and then today I rented the Rhythm Nation video which has a bit of an interview with her where these two black ladies start crying when they meet her because they dropped out of high school and when they heard her song off RN called "The Knowledge" they decided to go back to school.
But never mind, my main focus right now is on the Control album because I have neglected it in favor of Rhythm Nation for a little too long.
It's hard for me to believe that if someone hadn't blared "Nasty" out of a car on the highway a few months ago, this entire odyssey into the Janet Jackson past would have escaped me entirely. She would have merely been a footnote in my musical memory. Something I just watched on TV after school in the late 80s.
My faves are still "Come Back To Me" & "Let's Wait Awhile" at least as far as videos are concerned, but I need to get away from the videos now and listen to the albums more because you miss songs by just concentrating on the videos.
It still kills me that Paula fucking Abdul is in her early videos ("What Have You Done For Me Lately?") This is insane because Paula only made it big in my senior year of high school (not that I was ever a big fan).
The real sleeper on Control for me is that last track - "Funny How Time Flies (When You're Having Fun)"
Had enough? Bimble ain't done with Janet yet. Next up is POLLS muthafucka.

If I'm not mistaken, Paula Abdul was doing Janet's choreography at that time, hence.

needless to say, Control and Rhythm Nation have ruled my stereo for the better part of this past year.
and Bimble, man, you're missing out on some CRAZY tracks -- the slower numbers you mentioned are great but dude, the beat driven numbers are really, really, REALLY KILLER.

Oh I know they are! Don't get me wrong. I don't know why I'm so drawn to the slower ones as faves, though.
