Iron Butterfly's greatest contribution to the history of music was to give us 2 members of the band that gave me my sobriquet! And possibly the finest rock album of the 70s. But I'm derailing this album from its more than worthy subject again.

Fuckin' hell. album=thread. I should go back to lurking. Or not post semi-distractedly at work.

myopic_void (myopic_void), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:20 (seventeen years ago) link

two years pass...

After thorough listening and consideration, I am prepared to pronounce "Demolition Derby" his finest moment.

Right on, dude.

All I got in my pocket are two tokens and a dime, but I'm holding to the pieces of my dream.

pix pls.

ian, Monday, 17 November 2008 18:55 (fifteen years ago) link

looked, but no dice. She played taboura on stage with him towards the end there. She made a doc about her dad?

Fox Force Five Punchline (sexyDancer), Monday, 17 November 2008 19:08 (fifteen years ago) link

tamboura

seven months pass...

so i just ordered the live disc on water and i picked up the best of on vanguard

can we do a proper S/D with the best tracks?

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 29 June 2009 02:55 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm thinking of picking up e pluribus unum because none of that is included on the best of, but i wonder how much i need the first three to fill in the gaps from the best of

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 29 June 2009 02:55 (fourteen years ago) link

also i just want to point out that i got into this via roy montgomery's track "fantasia on a sandy bull"

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 29 June 2009 02:56 (fourteen years ago) link

live disc on Water is slightly shambling, but still awwwwwwesome -- him and Fahey on one night, must've been incredible.

tylerw, Monday, 29 June 2009 03:04 (fourteen years ago) link

i would definitely buy all the bull albums. but yeah, get e pluribus, it's fucking great.

next stop: NOWHERE, i wanna get off (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 29 June 2009 04:10 (fourteen years ago) link

too bad e pluribus is the only one readily available on CD. but i'm digging on this comp like crazy, wish i could find copies of "inventions" and "demolition derby".

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 29 June 2009 04:21 (fourteen years ago) link

and yeah that review upthread is on some bullshit.

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 29 June 2009 04:22 (fourteen years ago) link

demolition derby is just something else entirely man. god i love that record.

ian, Monday, 29 June 2009 04:23 (fourteen years ago) link

wish i could find copies of "inventions" and "demolition derby".

― moonship journey to baja, Monday, June 29, 2009 12:21 AM

never heard those either, i just have fantasias and e pluribus and possibly the live one but i think i sold it

am0n, Monday, 29 June 2009 04:43 (fourteen years ago) link

demolition derby is a ridic record. inventions is similar in vibe to fantasias.

ian, Monday, 29 June 2009 04:45 (fourteen years ago) link

demo derby is not really deep into the acid raga groove, aside from a few tracks. you get sort of weird sentimental stuff like "last date" which sounds like duane eddy but is totally smokin.

"coming together (a song of peace)" is ultimate stoner feel-good hippy protest jam.

ian, Monday, 29 June 2009 04:46 (fourteen years ago) link

hey um in reference to this:

She played taboura on stage with him towards the end there. She made a doc about her dad?

I am Sandy's daughter that made the film. I have recently done some new edits and started showing it around oakland/sf and am busy trying to set up some dates in other cities. let me know if you or anyone you know wants to host a night of film/music

sleeve, Monday, 29 June 2009 04:59 (fourteen years ago) link

should i start a thread on cosmic americana music? or is there already one?

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 29 June 2009 05:05 (fourteen years ago) link

where we talk about stuff that sounds like his version of "memphis, tn"?

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 29 June 2009 05:06 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah start one so I can talk about Fahey's "Fare Forward Voyagers"

I like it when he sings.

Trip Maker, Monday, 23 November 2009 20:50 (fourteen years ago) link

me too. it's like he's really got the right sense of funky jabberwocky in his singing

69, Monday, 23 November 2009 21:12 (fourteen years ago) link

So is it supposed to be a good movie or what?? I'm thinking about going...

Hatch, Monday, 23 November 2009 22:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, I can't figure out if it's supposed to be good or not. The only thing I remember from the last time it came around was the opinion that "Sandy's daughter is a fox."

ian, Monday, 23 November 2009 23:12 (fourteen years ago) link

How so? He's a character?

No, but several times in the book, one of the main characters has to get stoned and put on Sandy Bull whenever he's bidding on a mystical vase on eBay in order to... eh, just read it I suppose. :)

jonathan lethem talks too much about music in his books! it creeps me out a little bit, like im reading nick hornby. sometimes is okay, and i understand the importance of cross-medium reference etc, but like, it all reminds me of how loud wes anderson soundtracks are.

yeah, i'd like to see that whole doc, even tho it seems like it might be a lot of talking head action. are there interviews with sandy in it? or is it just wavy gravy.

Anyone heard this recently released live album?

curious about that SF 69 thing ... but I can't find any info about it (other than the descrip on the FE page and elsewhere). seems like it'd be at least a slightly bigger deal.

tylerw, Wednesday, 6 December 2023 16:00 (four months ago) link

biggest surprise of the Jann Wenner bio was Sandy Bull playing such a prominent role being Jane Wenner's longtime romantic partner, even while she was married to Jann. also didn't know he was such a bad junkie.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 6 December 2023 16:06 (four months ago) link

just when you think sandy can't be any cooler, he cucks jann wenner

and yeah, he was, uh, a committed heroin user for a long time, i think.

idk, is it a bootleg label? the cover photo, pretty clearly from the 80s, doesn't inspire much confidence.

Trading Places appears to be a Radation sublabel, which afaik is legit

https://www.discogs.com/label/1624893-Trading-Places

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 6 December 2023 18:07 (four months ago) link

from Discogs comments:

For those concerned with questions of legitimacy, Trading Places appears to license many of their releases from Cherry Red, who does factually maintain rights to the several releases I checked. Cherry Red / Esoteric Recordings is fully legitimate, and if they grant the license then the releases are legitimate. One may contact Cherry Red to confirm this for themselves. Every Trading Places release I've viewed has some form of licensing claim, whether from Cherry Red or other parties related to the respective release. This does not mean they are legitimate, but are at the very least researching rights holders.
