cotton candy from the ron howard b-movie of the same name!

and, p.s., i just looked up the imdb page on ron's brother clint, who starred in "cotton candy," and noticed that it fell in the middle of this consecutive streak of movies for clint:

"grand theft auto" (1977)
"i never promised you a rose garden" (1977)
"harper valley p.t.a." (1978)
"cotton candy" (1978)
"rock n roll high school" (1979)

i was initially impressed by #3 and #4 in that list, and wondered if he's the only actor in history who's had consecutive roles in movies named after the only major pop hit by a female country singer. (must remember to use that one in a trivia thread sometime.)

then i realized this was a full-on five-picture streak whose titles are a video game, two crossover country smashes, a fictional rock band, and a ramones classic.

in later years he has appeared in "an innocent man" (1989, unclear if billy joel is aware of this one), "ice cream man" (he had the title role in this 1995 pic, whose jonathan richman link may or may not have been coincidental), "that thing you do" (1996, fictional rock hit, yay) and, um, "beethoven's 5th" (2003).

i hereby declare clint howard most.awesome.actor.evah.

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 02:53 (eighteen years ago) link

The Rutles had some great ones that transcended the parody bit ("Cheese and Onions" is majestic, "Get Up And Go" is almost better than "Get Back," and "I Must Be In Love" would have been huge in 1965).

The Beets really did have something good going on, especially when they got Mr. Bone in with the yodelling. Doug and Skeeter's little garbage can band has also always sort of been the archetype of what I would want making musc to be like...

But the absolute definitive winner and still champeen of the thread is and always will be Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Far and away.

"The hero of Espadair Street"

ie. danny weir aka. weirD and his band frozen gold. not as funny and glib an answer as some of the above, but that's a good book by one of my favorite authors (iain banks) the whole mythos and minutiae of the fictional band is really fleshed out well

also third or fourthing wyld stallyns

I had a Pavement tour EP that claimed they were touring with... *finds sleeve*

The Flotilla Chips
Parchmen
Temple's People
Slavegrinders
The Skin Music

Perhaps not 'favourites', but I've long assumed that they were all pretty bitchin', in a non-existent kind of way.
