Britney Spears is an Idiot: SHOCKER!

Britney's kneejerk acceptance and blind faith in the doctrice of the Bush administration implies abject idiocy to me. If that quote came from Bono or Jaz Coleman or Gavin Friday or Phillip Glass or Laurie Anderon or Sporty Spice or Jon Spencer or Phyllis Diller, I'd feel the same way towards them. But, it didn't. It came from Britney, so she becomes the lucky recipient of that derision.

(oh no i'm being sucked into the vortex help me mommy)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:06 (twenty years ago) link

It's true. The jaw-dropping stupidity of her statement isn't in the politics of it. A comment like "we should just trust __________ in every decision that he makes and we should just support that" is mind-numbingly simean no matter who she's talking about.

shut up, Monday, 8 September 2003 15:09 (twenty years ago) link

simean!!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:09 (twenty years ago) link

Calling Britney Spears an idiot is misogynistic is it? Oh fuck off.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:13 (twenty years ago) link

I don't think it's misogyny to laugh at Britney's comments. If anything, I'd rather that female performers not act like a bimbo in public.

Don't forget that Fred Durst made some equally dumb vague "anti-war" statement at some awards show.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:13 (twenty years ago) link

simean, indeed,

I love music!

''Do you agree that people in authority should be enthusiastically supported without question and without reservation?''

does it actually make any difference either way? Lets face it, ppl can support or disapprove of the person in power but its all to do with what happens during the election, or which name you cross at the ballot.

If she criticised him there would be lots of cynicism round here too.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:15 (twenty years ago) link

does it actually make any difference either way?

No, it doesn't. Well, I'm glad we got that cleared up.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:18 (twenty years ago) link

julio i know i am risking turning this idiotic thread into some sort of half-assed political debate here, but: do you honestly think the only political action that matters is voting?

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:18 (twenty years ago) link

If she criticised him there would be lots of cynicism round here too

Actually, you couldn't be more wrong about that one Julio, she'd have shot up in my estimation exponentially - it would have been a genuinely brave and surprising thing to say whereas no-one's suprised or cares if some tit like Thom Yorke or Damon Albarn does it.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:19 (twenty years ago) link

Dixie Chicks to thread!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:20 (twenty years ago) link

It's not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing; it's a matter of thinking. She openly said she'd rather not. That is idiotic, and calling it so, is not misognystic in the least.

David Allen, Monday, 8 September 2003 15:21 (twenty years ago) link

''Actually, you couldn't be more wrong about that one Julio, she'd have shot up in my estimation exponentially''

er, have you actually read the threads on some of the 'left' wing bands round here keith?

jess: no I don't. But she has always been a pop star first.

What right wing opinions has Jaz Coleman spoke about?

Rabid Rob, Monday, 8 September 2003 15:31 (twenty years ago) link

Nothing recently, although he's expressed some frankly bizarre conspiracy theories in some recent interviews.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:35 (twenty years ago) link

she has been doing the pop star thing all her life so is her opinion (that we shouldn't criticize bush) surprising?

she maybe wrong but an idiot?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:36 (twenty years ago) link

Perhaps "idiot" is a relative term here. From the perspective of the left, she comes across as an unquestioning pawn (i.e. idiot), whereas if you were a hardline conservative, you might wish she was a bit more eloquent in her espousal, but generally think she was on the right track.

That said, however, I still think "idiot" is applicable due to her adherence to supporting "EVERY decision" by the President. That doesn't show any deep understanding or concern about specific issues, but rather a voluntary decision to let someone else sweat the hard stuff and not get involved...or even informed...at all.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:00 (twenty years ago) link

keep in mind that rather than expressing her deep-seated opinion on this issue she was just as likely expressing what she thought (right or no) was the safest, least prickly opinion possible... as i imagine after 10+ years of popstar grooming she has learned to. i would imagine it's almost a reflex at this point.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:11 (twenty years ago) link

expressing what she thought...

I think the point is that she wasn't really thinking anything. She's letting that genius George W Bush do her thinking for her.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:24 (twenty years ago) link

he was the voice in her head quietly whispering 'put out to Justin, go on, it's okay, we can keep the charade up for another 2 years after'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:37 (twenty years ago) link

she should have said "I think we are all in agreeance that we should just trust our President in every decision that he makes, and we should just support that."

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 8 September 2003 20:34 (twenty years ago) link

she's v smart.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 8 September 2003 20:40 (twenty years ago) link

i agree with julio's first statement, at least.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 8 September 2003 20:49 (twenty years ago) link

I don't think Brit's statement is dumb at all ... I think Americans have the right to expect that our elected officials can handle situations and are more equipped to do the right things. Second-guessing is entirely an American thing, I understand. But we're also a republic, not an egalitarian society, and Britney at least understands that.

That said, surely you hope she's right in her adherence, though at $87 million and no international support, it's looking pretty f'n precarious.
