Classic: The Breakfast Club. Not matter what anyone says.

haha, i was just thinking that for both classic and dud :)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 14 November 2004 21:50 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah thats a tough call.

Dazed and Confused for an authentic 70s style buzz.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Just simply not for me. Drugs just don't interest me, while smoking is not something I'd do with tobacco due to family loss (lung cancer, etc.) = my reasons for not smoking pot are even greater.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:10 (nineteen years ago) link

ned, you can always vaporize.

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:12 (nineteen years ago) link

also: are you saying you haven't heard LOVELESS stoned NED?

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Shrewd questions arise as a result of this vaporization claim. And no, I haven't. Hell, I heard it live from the band itself in a packed club when the volume and power of the music made it feel like rapture compacted, *anything* is a comedown after that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:14 (nineteen years ago) link

that's all well and good, but have you ever heard it live from the band itself in a packed club when the volume and power of the music made it feel like rapture compacted...on WEED???

Elliot (Elliot), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:23 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't believe ANYONE could listen to that much Smashing Pumpkins and not be on drugs. I think he's lying.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Classic for the first 6 months, dud there on.

Horrible idea.

I can't believe ANYONE could listen to that much Smashing Pumpkins and not be on drugs. I think he's lying.

Alas, ye of little faith. ;-)

When I was fresh-faced, appealing, worry-free, limitlessly creative: Classic, smoked every single day and functioned incredibly. At one point I was probably the most quotable teenager in Canada.

Now that naivete has gone, I look how I feel, anxieties have been unearthed by time and powders: Dud, I try not to touch it, and even when I've had a good week and say what the hey, it still FUCKS with me.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:45 (nineteen years ago) link

*the volume and power of the music made it feel like rapture compacted*
This is "higher" than anything I ever wrote (or thought) while stoned. Hmmm.

I GENERATE MY OWN DRUGS! I'M THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:51 (nineteen years ago) link

The funny thing about anxiety is that for a long time it never maybe me paranoid. And then I stopped doing it for a while and would do it occasionally in social situations, and after I had a really bad, near-psychotic, paranoid experience with it, it kept causing anxiety. But before that, despite my tendencies toward anxiety, it didn't make them worse. In fact, when I first started smoking it more heavily, it seemed to make it easier for me to handle social situations, but that went away really quickly. (Also we are talk about some pretty pot-friendly social situations: 24 hour modern dance performances, folkloric Brazilian music concerts, etc.)

scott is right: it makes you hear things differently, or at least it makes you think you are hearing things differently. I still think it helped me notice details I hadn't noticed before in recordings and videos, and that it made it more probable that I would discover those details; but I'm not convinced I could not have picked them up without pot (more that it made me more likely to notice them). There was a brief period after I stopped smoking pot that various music would make me think, "Oh man, I wish I were listening to this stoned," but I almost never think that now, and definitely haven't stopped enjoying music. (I think that dancing for long stretches of time also makes you hear music differently, but maybe it's more subtle.)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Also, I found that pot made everyday chores (going to the laundromat, cooking, maybe cleaning a bit) easier to deal with, but it tended to make it that much harder to solve problems that would arise, e.g., complaining to my land-lord about heat.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 14 November 2004 23:09 (nineteen years ago) link

ironically, me and the missus got *veh* stoned and listened to Loveless last night after getting back from a party... LUSH!

stevie (stevie), Sunday, 14 November 2004 23:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Classic. I watched Ferris Bueller's Day Off on Saturday night after a couple of joints, and I noticed all sorts of stuff about the film that I'd never paid any attention to before. (And I've seen the film many times.) There were a whole lot of throwaway lines and musical flourishes that took me completely by surprise. ("How can you say we didn't have fun today? We ate pancreas!")

Dud. I watched Mean Girls while stoned last night and enjoyed it so much that I revived the thread. It may not have been worth it.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 14 November 2004 23:24 (nineteen years ago) link

"ironically" - don't you mean "coincidentally"? Sorry, a pet peeve of mine.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 14 November 2004 23:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Though obviously Bill Clinton = classic. Because no-one believed him/

At least one of the friends that were smoking with him says that he really didn't inhale--the pot was too harsh for him, and he kept coughing it out.

OTM

weed's alright i guess. it's fun for me once in a while, but i'd hate to be stoned all the time as i already live my life in an absent-minded daze.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 15 November 2004 00:58 (nineteen years ago) link

like it every now and again. I actually think, for all the crazy laughing stuff and pipes I did when I was younger, I now like weed as a more serious drug. I mean like having a joint or two with friends and chatting about stuff, on a Sunday, when you're not going out anywhere.

and obviously being in the hot sun with a great big spliff and a few beers+some music is paradise.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 November 2004 01:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, but being in the hot sun with a few beers and some music is paradise anyway - though marijuana is no doubt a welcome addition.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 15 November 2004 01:16 (nineteen years ago) link

doesn't go well with anyone who has ever suffered from any kind of anxiety...

This is surprising. It makes me much more comfortable socially. Not as comfortable as alcohol, but it's way better than being sober. When I'm sober and thrust into social situations (parties, mostly) I typically want to run away screaming. Pot makes it easier for me to veg out against a wall and examine the people around me; makes me feel less self-concious. (I understand it's the total opposite in many people, though.)

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 15 November 2004 01:17 (nineteen years ago) link

I am not sure about the anxiety thing. beer or es make me feel less anxiety than if I was sober but that's probably cos I consume alot of them.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 November 2004 01:18 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't know if marijuana makes me feel more at ease in social situations, I'd say not. I tend to only do it as a sort of bridge between clubs and bed, or pills and beer, etc. or just on its own as I said.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 November 2004 01:19 (nineteen years ago) link

xpost
it is the exact opposite for me. as soon as i get a little bit stoned i start feeling like i should hide. i get really embarassed and ashamed. i think things like i'm really ugly and dumb and worthless, and a few times i've even gotten mad at myself for not going to church, etc. but i hate church; i don't even believe in god!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 15 November 2004 01:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I have a few anxiety problems related to bipolar disorder, but I don't have any problems with cannabis at all. (I try to stay away from drugs these days as I'm not too confident in my mental health - made the mistake of taking acid again recently and reacted somewhat like Caitlin does to cannabis, a total hatred of God. I had a bad trip and spent an eternity in a godless void of infinite repetition, ocassionally upsetting people bu jabbering about God and infinity. So, as a general rule, if your mind isn't sound generally, it's best to avoid drugs) But I find cannabis can be a temporary respite from depression, though I find I feel worse the day after.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 15 November 2004 01:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Haven't touched the stuff in over 20 years cuz it just made me sleepy. It remains my wife's after dinner "martini", though.
Where it really bugs me is that a large % of my students come to school after smoking up, and that's just stooopid (some of you will say that's just my perspective). Many times, I just send them home...after I talk to them about maybe being more responsible about the stuff.

peepee (peepee), Monday, 15 November 2004 01:28 (nineteen years ago) link

So, as a general rule, if your mind isn't sound generally, it's best to avoid drugs

yeah, it's so unfortunate. if i can't handle marijuana, i can't really handle much else. i've been shut out of almost the entire wonderful world of drugs.

and it's not that i hate god as a result of smoking, it's that i start to feel like i'm dying and think, 'maybe if i had gone to church and behaved myself...' which is very strange and uncomfortable because it's not the same kind of dying feelings i've experienced from depression, where i never think of god at all.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 15 November 2004 01:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Last night, a good friend of mine DJed at a dub/reggae night at a local hole. It was great to hear all of this stuff, REALLY LOUD. Anyways, he still smokes pot, and I don't, but he suggested that if you listen to enough music made by people who did a lot of drugs, you get the effects without having to do them.

peepee (peepee), Monday, 15 November 2004 01:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Drugs are over-rated, really.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 15 November 2004 01:35 (nineteen years ago) link

the noize board believes otherwise.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 15 November 2004 01:38 (nineteen years ago) link

that's not even entirely, caitlin! there are plenty of non-druggie folx on the noise board.

but honestly, i like LSD way more than I like pot, and THAT is a problem.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 15 November 2004 01:38 (nineteen years ago) link

i was joking, ian! and yeah, that's my problem, i really can't do LSD. and i'm getting old!

If I were still Ian's & Jon's age I wouldn't be typing this right now. I would be in a gutter somewhere laughing my ass off. But, alas, there is a two year old asleep in the next room and I'm an old fogey. I had my 15 years of irresponsible fun!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 15 November 2004 02:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Dude, when you a two year old, you don't need drugs to make you laugh, right? That was always my perception; I'll quit it with the self-destructive bullshit when I spawn and have something worthwhile to focus my attention on.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 15 November 2004 02:24 (nineteen years ago) link

(and i didn't even go to college, just so i wouldn't have anything get in the way of booze & drugs. I had priorities!)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 15 November 2004 02:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, kidz are the ultimate. But that was my point. Smoke up when you can, dood! If you are having fun, have fun.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 15 November 2004 02:26 (nineteen years ago) link

(maria smokes up more than me. but she comes from one of those brilliant hippy families who treat weed like a condiment and still go to yale and harvard and become doctors and lawyers and are all crazy productive and such. don't you hate those types??)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 15 November 2004 02:29 (nineteen years ago) link

i don't think it's for me, considering i've only had mediocre or bad experiences on it. whenever i've tried it, i haven't been able to concentrate on anything, and i find that REALLY horrible and frustrating, not fun. (this isn't a problem when i get drunk, interestingly)

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 15 November 2004 02:29 (nineteen years ago) link

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 15 November 2004 02:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Whenever I take anything to help sleep, it's usually right before bed, so I generally don't get any effects (that I know of) besides a good night's rest. Only challenge comes when the cat wakes me up in the middle of the night and demands a very groggy escort to the food dish. He's lucky I haven't stepped on him, I'm lucky I haven't fallen down the stairs.

fun times at prog nite at the local bar yesterday, we had a circle going featuring FIVE different forms of weed - one guy was passing a J, one guy had a bowl, I had my Pax2, the bartender had her vape pen, and then the DJ had some popcorn his wife made, which I ate against my better judgement, though luckily it was not too strong! suffice to say I was reaaaally feeling Gong that night

I just discovered a prog night at a local brewery a couple weeks ago, how did I not know these are actually a thing? Walking in to "I Talk To The Wind" with laser lights beaming across the ceiling was such a trip.

first time I went it was mostly older folks which was cool because some of them have actually seen these bands back in the day and will talk about what it was like getting The Lamb the day it was released. but lately there's actually been a lot of younger folks (well, people my age or a bit younger). outside one of them was asking the DJ "oh was that Van Der Generator before?". was really cool to see. later in the night he'll start playing stuff like Hawkwind and people will actually come onto the dance floor, it's wild

after all this talk on here i decided to take a thc cleanse! meaning, no gummies for awhile. its sad but i am already seeing the benefits. getting up earlier. more focus. reading at night instead of just passing out after hours of streaming tv/movies.
i was totally using them as medicine. the gummies. since the pandemic. for nighttime jitters. but i feel okay now. for me. mostly okay. thc definitely dulls my interest in things. which i kinda wanted for awhile. i didn't want to think. but thinking can be underrated.
