oh fuck had I but known this information.

think didn't call in sick partly because of LIE, but if I'd known about housewive's fave Charlie sooner I'd've sacked it off.

and this from a professional skiver earlier in my life (but then people who think they're good at this sort of thing are usually v bad).

oh god -

couldn't find you!
(me)

Let me know, in which part are you on?

Now at the front.

I think , I have to come back to 4 parts back

Jesus wept now.

I bought some Fernet Branca a couple of weeks ago. I don't mind it straight, but I'm looking for some simple cocktails I can make with it. The best one I've come across so far is the Toronto: Fernet Branca, whiskey (some recipes specify rye), simple syrup, and Angostura bitters, with a orange peel garnish.

Actually, the first time I had Fernet was in Buenos Aires, where they mix it with Coca Cola, so I guess that's an option, too.

jaymc, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:54 (eleven years ago) link

national drink of Argentinian teenagers or something like that

questino (seandalai), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:04 (eleven years ago) link

fernet with coke sounds like a gustatory black hole. only possible cocktail is fernet + more fernet imo. doesn't combine. like one of those.. oh god I just asked my tech colleague what an element that doesn't combine easily with another element was called and he just gave me a full-blown but barely conprehensible account of the periodic table and protons and electrons which gave for my head to throb in agony. so I'll just say fernet's like the opposite of an alkahest, whatever the term for that is, but I'm not going to ask colleague as do not fancy a lecture on Paracelsus during which I'll have to wear my mask of attentive understanding, which feels like it's generating an aneurysm. ye gods, he's just started on about molecules. Rly nice chap, but please stop now.

still dying but it's happening slowly, oh so slowly.

in retrospect the glass of whisky between the fernets was possibly a bad idea it's true. god this dismal litany of stations feel like stations of the fucking suburban cross - Walton-on-Thames, Weybridge, Farnham, Surbiton. Just get me to Golgotha already ffs.

shiva has gone to sleep.

Say Bo to a (Fizzles), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:16 (eleven years ago) link

I swear by this stuff but I don't even chase it with ginger ale anymore. It's one of those things I find doesn't mix well. Now angostura bitters and gin, otoh...

I have heard that Fernet-Branca is the world's larest purchaser of saffron.

Canaille help you (Michael White), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:21 (eleven years ago) link

Ahhhh, fernet. #memories

Chief Queef - Vaginally Rich (wins), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:27 (eleven years ago) link

I also first tried it in buenos aires. The porteños who offered it to me did so as if they were handing me a crack pipe in a public information film: "Go on, just try it, it's a little overwhelming at first but you'll love it man, it's wild"

Chief Queef - Vaginally Rich (wins), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:31 (eleven years ago) link

you have fernet #memories?

the only time I've drunk pink gins I fell over on the way out of my house.

Say Bo to a (Fizzles), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:38 (eleven years ago) link

ya they and they alone are why saffron is so expensive iirc xxp

fernet was always a weird medicinal thing my mum made me take as a kid but i got somewhat hooked on cynar in the summer and have since revisited the old stuff for a laugh

still fairly unpleasant but i quite like it in coffee, gets u super jacked up if need be

The Dr Henderson: equal parts Fernet Branca and creme de menthe, with ice. A hangover cure invented by the father of Fergus Henderson, owner of St John, the London restaurant.

Hadn't heard of Cynar before. Might try it in a year or so's time when this hangover has worn off.

xpost jesus

cure as in cure you stone cold dead presumably.

Say Bo to a (Fizzles), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 19:43 (eleven years ago) link

Cynar is made with artichokes, iIrc, and I've only had it served before dinner.

Ramazotti is a good amaro if you find Fernet to be to bitter.

Canaille help you (Michael White), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:42 (eleven years ago) link

cynar's great ramazottis great fernets great. these are my drinks

just sayin, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:43 (eleven years ago) link

to be fair to the fernet, the fear that has started kicking in, and which is one of the main reasons I've cut down radically on my drinking, is nowhere near as bad as that of whisky. (yes this is probable mystic bullshit, but I associate different drunks and consequently different hangovers with similar strength drinks - fernet's always been a winner here for me)

Say Bo to a (Fizzles), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 21:06 (eleven years ago) link

There's a great chapter on bitters and herbal liqueurs in Jason Wilson's "Boozehound." I guess American tastes run to the sweet and Euro tastes run to the ... gross? Just kidding. But I couldn't imagine drinking stuff like this, Pernod, Campari, absinthe, Benedictine, Chartreuse and other spirits along those lines straight. They're tough enough in a lot of cocktails!

Equal parts Fernet Branca, Campari, and Cynar, with a pinch of salt and a twist of grapefruit = the Bottecchia, which makes for a great nightcap.

Revive for Christmas. Fernet in cocktails has never worked for me because it just ends up tasting like adulterated Fernet but the other day I had this in Dublin:

FERNET IT**
Olmeca Reposado Tequila, sweet vermouth, Green Chartreuse, Fernet Branca, VCC porter, gomme syrup, Orinoco Bitters, with lemon oils

and it turns out that tequila + Chartreuse + Guinness can gang up on the Fernet and come to a truce.

also interesting. i’ve got a large and steadily diminishing bottle of fernet in the kitchen cupboard. steadily diminishing because i’ve got into the bad habit of pouring myself several large slugs of the stuff after returning home from a night out.

Fizzles, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 15:23 (six years ago) link

In Madrid a few years ago, my wife ordered fernet at a bar, expecting to get a little digestif-sized serving. The bartender clearly didn't know what the stuff was, even though she had a bottle of it, so she gave my wife a full 8-oz glass of it, no rocks or anything. Just a whole glass of room-temp fernet. Most of it got left behind when we went to the next bar.
