i had been considering "the ineffable lightness of bubbling" but I think that may actually be too annoying, if such a think is possible.

Slogans
The slogan for Aero in Australia during the 1980s was "It's the bubbles of nothing that make it really something." From the 1999 redesign and "singers" advertising campaign Aero's tagline was "Have you felt the bubbles melt?" This slogan was invented by Nick Welch, an advertiser and the father of Florence Welch of the indie band Florence and the Machine. The latest slogan as of 2011 is now "Irresistabubble". In 2012 the Aero bar slogan will be changed to "Get your bubble on".[citation needed]

This does not surprise me.

usually drink, usually dance, usually bubble

this is acceptable to me!

Further to the old-skool Jackin chat earlier, have any of you lot checked out Ill Phil's old pre-jackin stuff with Will Bailey under the names Bass Weazal and Punk Rolla? Been flicking through, some of these tracks/mixtapes are as rude as anything!

also on further refection, I would like to add KNITEFORCE to the list of possible spiritual forefathers of jackin (the others mentioned were Suburban base, Nu Groove, Todd Terry and Kenny Dope i think). Coming at it from these angles rather than the straight uk garage lineage is more interesting to me atm, i've already listened to so much garage.

Benny B, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:22 (eleven years ago) link

had to google Kniteforce, so much for my schooling in ardkore lol

"With the ‘jackin house’ name being scorned somewhat recently with producers bringing out some total rubbish..."

sorta wonder who's he thinking of exactly? moreso since i hadn't pegged down mr certifiedjackin as a, err, super discriminate type

Mind Taker, Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:17 (eleven years ago) link

btw for whatever reason i checked the other day what Para of DEA Project fame is up to and... turns out he's giving away some top tunes for free! iirc some of you already know and love "Tell Me" as you should but i also heartily recommend "Fall in Love":

I think lots of people in these roles feel the need to say that there is (unidentified and undefined) rubbish out there precisely so as to evoke the impression of discrimination.

Sadly once that phenomenon becomes widespread (i.e. lots of people drawing lines between the good stuff and the bad stuff) it's usually the beginning of the end :-/

Though funky had about a two year run of goodness from the first complaints of this type (early 2009?) to its ultimate demise.

Tim F, Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:59 (eleven years ago) link

In ongoing crowdsourcing reax on replacement threadnames developments, I am perversely attracted to:

"It's the bubbles of nothing that make it really something"

and

"Have you felt the bubbles melt?"

Tim F, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:21 (eleven years ago) link

haha yes the first one did tickle me rather

r|t|c, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:26 (eleven years ago) link

sounds like something i'd argue at any rate

r|t|c, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:26 (eleven years ago) link

lol I had also thought "this is like an r|t|c compliment"

Tim F, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:27 (eleven years ago) link

perhaps as per mr certifiedjackin we should continue cultivating the "ineffable" brand recognition

from thence an ineffabubbler might even spring forth hmmmmm?

Mind Taker: bigup! Some of those are big. Love Me is one of my all time favorite garage/anything tunes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxCybFwQhPQ

Benny B - re alternative jackin linages, Lorenzo mentioned Musical Mobb when I asked what inspired the jackin bass!

You can definitely here some of that in this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2Hfd8oUQIk
As well as the totally hardcore/euphoric vocal line.

What I'm interested in is, what's the house these guys were listening to pre-jackin? Apart from like, Body Language by M.A.N.D.Y & Booka Shade I really can't find any electro which seems to reach forwards to jackin.

This early Ryan James swagger mix is apparently quite a big deal/major Ur-Jackin text:

https://soundcloud.com/ryanjamesmusic/swagger-volume-2
It's mostly pretty swag lol. Love the tag: 'Electro Organ House' though. There's your whachucallit moment right there.

The track that kicks in at 35 minutes in is Love For Me by Lorenzo (& Jayye Jackin and Dappa D I think..)

https://soundcloud.com/chris-lawrence/groove-box-love-for-me
It was one of the very first couple of house tracks he ever made. It's quite good fun, but what really sticks out is how underdeveloped it sounds compared to his stuff now. Obviously that's in large part to him becoming a more mature producer, really honing his skills over the last couple of years.

But I also think it's the sound itself maturing, coming into its own. Listening to that track, or like, Doin Time by James Oliver -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaKbcuEbXjo - a total banger from 2010, really provides the best evidence I can think of that along with being absolutely don't-give-a-fuck-BANGING party music and a vital and thriving scene, jackin does have a FWD imperative, The sound's innovating, getting better and weirder all the time really.

Datwun, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:21 (eleven years ago) link

r|t|c, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:25 (eleven years ago) link

well there's... several years worth of post-'Your Hands Up for Detroit'/pre-Swedish House Mafia mersh electro-house for starters?

Mind Taker, Friday, 1 February 2013 15:15 (eleven years ago) link

That's what I'm saying, I don't hear the likeness.

Some of my first times clubbing around 07~08 were to big bate electro house (lol) and I remember it all being midrange, sawtooth shit (good craig though)
I mean, obviously there is jackin which is just midrange sawtooth shit, but I'm talking about the bassy elements of it, the warp-donk-owl bass etc.
Or do the sub frequencies all come just through bassline?

I suppose what I mean is, I'd love to know what were some of the house bangers that were doing the deed up in the North/Midlands around 2009, as bassline was dying and jackin was being born.

Datwun, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:14 (eleven years ago) link

ok i guess i was thinking in broader termes incl. uh 'electroline' or whatever that sort of thing's called nowadays - since jackin came out of it i'd wager they were probably raving to Fedde Le Grand, Axwell etc (stuff that also had much more swing and funkiness to it than both the Get Physical-type electro-house that preceded it and the trance-with-hamfisted-electro-interludes EDM mersh that followed)

Mind Taker, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:41 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah I can hear that. I've heard people posit the more fidget end of things as an influence, what are some of the '09 fidget bangers one should know about?

Datwun, Friday, 1 February 2013 17:14 (eleven years ago) link

I dunno, Crookers, Switch, Jesse Rose, Count and Sinden too I suppose. That stuff has never really been acceptable to me but its definitely a direct influence on folk like Ill Phil at least (check those mixtapes on the Bass Weazal SC posted above). Jackin does a much better job of the electro house + kitchen sink thing.

That James Oliver track is amazing. I've been looking to buy it for ages...looks like it was up on BigTunes for a while but it isn't there anymore.

Benny B - thanks! That Crookers tune which was big in 'Napa was massive obviously.
But yeah it was never really a sound pallet which did anything for me. Worth listening for the genealogy I spose!

r|t|c: mix looks good! Excited to hear it :O

matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project): What's your email, I'll send it over! I had to add James Oliver on facebook and get it directly off him, he was very safe about it though, sent it over for free because "it's really old and I don't make that style of music anymore". Goes off, still!

ok didn't feel the second half of that as much as first... but still! "Rock Your Body" - so so gorgeous

https://soundcloud.com/dannyphillips1978

now, this guy... not the first, and most certainly not the last Todd acolyte to jack his sound, but all the One Dark Martians et al had at least added *something* of their own - while this guy emulates Todd to an almost embarrassing degree, even down to the track titles ("Be Thankful"! "Looking for the Light"! "The Voice"!)

but he's often really really good at it, and it's also sorta refreshing that he goes so heavily for the 90s disco Todd instead of the usual New Trends Sounds-era fake Todd bizness
