new remix out today, juke-meets-bounce vibes. i'd been wanting to mess around with Triggaman samples in another tempo/context for awhile.

video of my band playing last night.. obv it's just camera-quality sound but it gives you an idea:

You can only barely see me in this video since I am off to the right lurking in the shadows. When the camera pans my way you mostly just see my hands.

I just downloaded most of your tracks. I dig them. They're just weird enough to be interesting.

I try to straddle a line between my stream-of-conciousness indulgence and something which could hopefully work on the dancefloor. It’s hard to talk about your own music without sounding pretentious isn’t it?

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 16 February 2013 15:24 (eleven years ago) link

I feel like I can relate to it. I'm attracted to certain kinds of music that not only sound like I like it, but sound like something I would want to do. A few of your tracks have that vibe for me.

dan selzer, Saturday, 16 February 2013 17:01 (eleven years ago) link

I stayed 3 months in an uninsulated cabin (ala Boniver) recording house music with my buddy. I'm proud of this track but I have no idea if anyone would actually dance to it. At the very least, if you give it a listen, I thank you.

dog latin, Sunday, 17 February 2013 22:43 (eleven years ago) link

It's not one of my tracks, but I took on a recording project for a local metal band we have played a few gigs with that didn't have a demo. It was a chance to record and mix some stuff that I had never done before, including a huge double kick kit and a band tuned down to I think Bb.

You guys like the electronic music more on this side of ILXor, but you might find this interesting. I don't think the production turned out too bad for being recorded in a living room in suburbia with a couple mattresses against the windows to keep the Romanian neighbors from calling the cops.

lots of cool stuff everyone

earlnash, that link just sends me to my own page so i couldn't listen

here's a new thing i wrote, this is about right when i got the structure nailed down so it's kind of halting performancewise, i'll need to play it a lot better than this...but overall i think it's pretty good. more folk/fingerstyle instrumental stuff recorded on my phone

been starting to go through the gear i've been accumulating over the last while and made a couple of demo tracks using nothing but the titular synth

dog latin, how long have you been making music?

Dick Townwolves (Captain Ahab), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:02 (eleven years ago) link

Captain Ahab - I've been doing things here and there with breaks in between since I was about 17. I used to make a lot of tunes with DOS trackers under the name Autofire from about 1999-2004. Then I took a bit of a break from writing any music for a couple of years. Rediscovered the guitar and started playing around with Reason and stuff circa 2006. Recorded a sort of weird bedroom pop album during a bout of redundancy in 2007 under the name Mighty Sandy Heath Transmitters. I'm now in a band called Disco Zhivago, been jamming around together for about a year and a half or so but we've just played our first couple of gigs and are about to get a two-track single together.

ok so i need some advice about what to do with this:

https://soundcloud.com/scarequotes-1/ethel-merman

i accidentally came up with a loop i really like and did some stuff to it. then i added a subtle organ part. but i can't decide if it's done now or not. i feel like maybe it needs something else but nothing i try works. i tried recording guitar on it but it pushed it too far into a stereotypical psychedelic thing. but also i know i have a tendency to overstuff songs and record more tracks than i need to, so maybe it's ok as is and i just need to move on?

congratulations (n/a), Saturday, 2 March 2013 02:09 (eleven years ago) link

now i don't know about the organ or the effects on the loop either. maybe i should just start over from the loop.

congratulations (n/a), Saturday, 2 March 2013 02:19 (eleven years ago) link

This is a great 'middle of side 2' album track. There's no need to strip it back to the loop.
The drop outs at 1:39, 3:46 and 5:00 are a little distracting and upset the vibe a bit. Maybe add a distant reverb-y pad and some extra light percussion in the background from 3:00 onwards to give it a bit more direction. IOW I like the bit in the middle where all the instruments go off except for the organ, and then they fade back in, but a couple of other things need to fade back in with them.

that's really nice. i didn't hear your original track but i feel the pain of that position, having recently stumbled across a nice loop and spending ages adding things that really did little but diminish it, and now feeling the need to undo all of that work to have anything decent to work with again.

i recently rediscovered a bunch of my old recordings and to my surprise found some stuff that i'd like to get back to developing if i could only remember how i did it. this one from i think around 2006 i found quite nice, even if the recording itself is utterly wack: https://soundcloud.com/eeeeeein/dadf-aeacou

Hey all - could I get a little bit of constructive feedback on this please? We've had an initial "how's this?" from the studio engineer on one of our tracks. Overall, I think it's okay but it's very difficult to distance myself and listen to it with uninvolved ears.

I'd really like to hear your thoughts, particularly on the mixing/production (we can't really go back into the studio to do any overdubs or retakes so we're working with the raw material we have, for better or worse). Are there any glaring errors on this track or things I should mention before I get back to him? One thing I noticed is that he's been a bit heavy handed witht he gating and compression, particularly some of the vocal parts where the sibilants and plosives are almost non-existent.

I'm only gonna keep this track online for a short while, but if someone could give it a listen and let me know their thoughts, i'd be very much obliged:

Hey dog latin, I don't think there's anything "wrong" with it from a technical perspective, but it all depends on what you're going for. A different approach could make it sound different. But nothing sounded really weird to me.
