LL I haven't been around a lot of babies lately but I'm pretty sure they get way more compelling once they are born and not incipient

Look, here's the ONLY new parent schpiel I'll go off on:
They rock. But damnit, they require a lot of time, work, and patience. The best advice to soon-to-be friends of soon-to-be parents is to remain present. Call regularly. Ask if you can swing by for a cup of coffee. Offer to pick up carry out. It will matter in ways you cannot imagine.
Alright. Done. Who else has a bit of a buzz on?

- Patricia Piccinini sculpture- a 4x space game that replaces my own repetitive agitation with someone else's repetitive agitation- salsa classes- perfect hummus- and the usual secular eschatology
― Pauper Management Improved (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 23 January 2013 15:15 (eleven years ago) link
Patricia Piccinini stuff is cool! I sadly am reminded of one of the most awkward artist talks ever, though, where multiple people asked variations of the question, "So, you don't actually sculpt them? You draw them? What do you do?"
― mh, Wednesday, 23 January 2013 15:20 (eleven years ago) link
Flavin is so fucking stellar
― Yo! MTV La Tengo (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 23 January 2013 19:52 (eleven years ago) link
I have a book on minimalism that I haven't actually read many articles in, but have browsed a lot. It has a Flavin work on the cover.
I kind of want to set up room in my basement in neutral colors (including painting the floor) and have lights on the four corners

And you are a better person for it. She was probably very glad to hear from you.
I'm totally giving you shit, but its motivated by some real life nonsense - like, 75% of our friends have totally disappeared and never call us anymore. Its fucking ridiculous. And on bad days, its pretty fucking depressing.
- Apparently, into getting depressed about the increasingly BAD global warming news we're seeing. Like, oh SHIT.

― mh, Wednesday, 23 January 2013 22:20 (eleven years ago) link
We talk like twice a week and have been close friends continuously since 1990! I don't really need any training in the friend department, at least not with her. I'm not your friends. I'm good.

The History Channel - was an avid watcher of Pawn Stars all the way through uni, but have only recently picked up on American Restoration, American Pickers and Storage Wars. This stuff is just so easy to watch without really engaging whatsoever.
Rowntrees Fruit Gums - delicious, and the after-taste you get from drinking water after eating these things is an absolute delight. They also last for ages if you chew slowly so when I'm sneaking them into my mouth whilst sat in court I don't have to draw attention to myself by continually rustling about and grabbing more.
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susannah Clarke - a little bit twee and slow, kinda wish there was a little more jeopardy at times, but it's pretty charming and I'm really enjoying the portrayal of magic in this book as opposed to the magic in something like Harry Potter. It's pleasantly eerie and creepy and fairytale-ish - mysterious chiming bells and dancing music that always appear to be coming from the next room in the house, little glades of trees that lead to dark paths through forests that can't possibly be there in reality, rooms that suddenly appear at the end of a corridor in the house and lead to a different house entirely etc. It's much more fun than "Here's a wand, point it like a gun and here is the one word spell to make fire / water / kill people" and so on. Looooong book for what it is, though.
Tartan - a recent development, since I knocked up my own kilt for a party thrown in honour of Rabbie Burns the other night. Never really tried skirts before but I've worn it around the house for the last few days and I'm finding it peculiarly liberating. Perhaps this could be the first step in a wonderful voyage of self-discovery?
Veins of the Queen by Robyn Hitchcock.
Workaholics with Adam, Blake and 'Ders. Funniest new programme I've come across since I finally sat down with Arrested Development a couple of years ago.
