that's great. nice framing between the two back facing figures.

hey everyone, what's shaking? still not developing film. just taking the time to organize some stuff and all. going a little stir crazy. any pictures that I happen to put up on flickr these days are still just how I saw: 2012.

I just added a big pile to the backlog and school started again so it may be a while. My new goal, frankly inspired by some of the stuff on the last thread, is to try and back off a little bit on the big punchy enhancements that LightRoom allows and try to embrace a lower-contrast look when it's suitable. I was in Moscow a few weeks ago and I have to be honest with myself that the overcast, snowy city looks better without stark contrast, though sadly I didn't have any days of that awesome hazy fog a la Michael Jones.

super jealous of fog

sorry if i'm posting too much this month-- really been on a tear lately though after months of nothing. combination of:

  • guy in my office letting me borrow lenses i'll never be able to afford
  • got lots of film for xmas
  • its my final weeks living in hawaii
  • self-imposed deadline for my sixth zine
i'll let up in a few weeks i promise

I love the fact that I'm associated with "awesome hazy fog"!

I found some 6x6 negatives in my dad's old wallet last night - photos of me as a baby from 1968-69. Probably taken by my uncle, who had a Hasselblad. Some photos of my dad's older brother, in uniform in Burma in 1944. I got to get scanning...

Michael Jones, Friday, 25 January 2013 09:14 (eleven years ago) link

hey gr8080, when you're on a kick, you're on a kick, so go for it!
where you moving to? will aloha friday survive???

mj, I looove old family photos more than just about any other kind of picture. I mean even technically, old snaps look soo great. soft contrast, ancient artifacts, etc.

gr8080's new publication in 2013: hello friday

Here's a photo of my parents from 1955. Sorry, I know this isn't the thread for it and I also apologise for the crappy digital border (that's the default Lightroom export option I have for Facebook, and FB is where I just grabbed this from)...

I did process it a bit - undid the fading of the years and got rid of some of the worst blemishes.

michaellambert, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 20:30 (eleven years ago) link

woah very nice: what are you shooting with?

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 20:32 (eleven years ago) link

Thanks! Just a Canon rebel and the cheap 50mm.

I was trying to raise the ISO to stupid noisy levels to get a day-for-night thing on the first pic, I'm such a massive noob tho', still coping (read, tearing my hair out) with working fully manual and getting a much higher ratio of soft pictures.

MaresNest, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 20:38 (eleven years ago) link

oh wow yeah those are really great. I really love the loose focus. I'm really feeling photos that don't concern themselves much with being in focus right now, and these hit the moodiness sweet spot.

Holy moly, 2013 is off to a hell of a start. Some amazing work here so far - particularly taken with Grady's double exposures and mirror tube experiments.

Here's a couple from the last few weeks:

Wow, that looks exactly like a still from this movie I watched last week, Martha Marcy May Marlene.

Took some shots of a friend's band, got an 85mm Canon lens at Xmas and it was a good excuse to practice, most of them were okay but as you'd expect, but this one with it's slight AF mistake I liked.

So many great shots so far this year, loving the reflections and shadows work.
Not been very productive this year so far. Forced myself out yesterday for a walk. I really should be doing more as I treated myself to a 5D MarkII before Christmas, feeling guilty for not making the most of it.

Sneaked a bunch of street shots on the way home tonight, I only had my 85mm lens on me however so I was kinda forced into portrait situations, took a bunch of people through shop windows.

That's great, MaresNest.

My photo-taking has slowed down a lot this year, have done a couple of gigs and working on weekly portraits. A friend lent me a Mamiya C330, put a film in and went for a walk today but couldn't figure out how to work it!
