Don't know from him, sorry. Only Washington guitar player I know is a Brazilian guy who moved up here full-time last year.

Hurting, just checked out the website of something called QJOG -the Queens Jazz OverGround, which is supposed to promote live jazz in Queens, and they had a woman listed there that I never heard of who studied with Ted and some other famous guitar players.

There are actually two people on that list who studied with Ted, and one was my year

Small world. Which I type whilst wondering if there is an emoticon for a certain kind of finding something a little surprising when really it is just a statistical likelihood that was bound to turn up sooner or later.

Lage Lund live streaming on Smalls website right now, later Nir Felder.

This guy is really more of an "out" guitarist than a jazz guitarist, but I like this a lot:

He's great. Saw him a few months ago, totally killed. Super nice guy, too.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Thursday, 13 June 2013 16:00 (ten years ago) link

Yeah he is in full disclosure a friend of a friend and is a generally killin guitarist as well as nice guy. I saw him do a basement show. Wasn't sure what thread to put his stuff in really, maybe not this one.

This thread is as good as any.

Jazz Guitar D-bags, go to this stream now (thanks to dow on the Rolling Jazz thread) http://www.npr.org/event/music/156120628/newport-jazz-festival to hear Jim Hall and Julian Lage.

The O RLY of Everything (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 4 August 2013 21:28 (ten years ago) link

Although this show was recorded earlier. But kind find stream in the archive.

The O RLY of Everything (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 4 August 2013 21:36 (ten years ago) link

It will be archived, likely enough, since a good number of these sets have been or are due soon, according to NPR's chat room cadre (I'll have to try this set again later; kinda spare-to-sparse/clean or just plain subtle for me right off)

Hurting, perhaps you should check out my man Tom Guarna, tons of chops but always with a great groove, plays plenty of big gigs but always super down to earth.

He's been gigging and recording his own project with some of your favorites in the band, Johnathan Blake on drums and Jon Cowherd on piano.

Two votes for Derek Bailey!? I demand a recount.

Moka, Friday, 15 November 2013 07:27 (ten years ago) link

Derek Bailey would object to being included in a "jazz guitar" poll probably

Damn. Sad. He wasn't that old in my mind, although in reality he was around 83.

I got to see him play at Sonny Rollins' 80th birthday show at the Beacon Theater in NYC a few years ago.

One of the few jazz guitarists I'd put up there with pretty much any musician. Kind of wish he appeared as a sideman on a wider variety of records -- would have liked to have heard him play with more different people.

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 10 December 2013 19:17 (ten years ago) link

i dunno, he played with tons of people! you mean, like outside of the jazz world?

tylerw, Tuesday, 10 December 2013 19:38 (ten years ago) link

speaking of which, just occurred to me that he passed very close in time to Chico Hamilton

you know, i like sharrock too and i *love* "black woman" but sharrock getting more votes than charlie christian, jim hall, tal farlow and kenny burrell put together is ultimate challops

the late great, Thursday, 12 December 2013 02:17 (ten years ago) link

I think it's more ignorance than challops tbf. A lot of ilmers come to jazz from a punk background, so they gravitate toward the freer players. Similarly, Grant Green gets 3x Wes because he plays the heavy funk, even though he's a far inferior player.

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Thursday, 12 December 2013 03:50 (ten years ago) link

I like Grant Green more than you do but agree with your basic argument.

The Glam Of That All The Way From Memphis Man! (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 12 December 2013 20:18 (ten years ago) link

not "ignorance", but personal taste

massaman gai, Thursday, 12 December 2013 20:30 (ten years ago) link

i dunno, this poll is a little silly to begin with -- like, we wouldn't just do a rock guitar poll would we? have people voting either thurston moore or scotty moore?

tylerw, Thursday, 12 December 2013 20:35 (ten years ago) link

I like Grant Green ok -- he has a great sound and feel, his solos just never go anywhere and he's really limited harmonically.

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Thursday, 12 December 2013 20:36 (ten years ago) link

Most polls are silly. This poll in particular is only silly because based on the voter turnout people probably haven't heard or let alone listened to many of these guys, personal taste or not.

i like grant green a lot but part of that i think is the early 60s blue note magic

Poo Note

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 12 December 2013 21:19 (ten years ago) link

Anything 60s Blue Note with Sonny Clark is particularly unimpeachable.

Lots of tributes out there about what a nice guy Jim Hall was.

Including these three by some Canadian guitarists: http://blogs.ottawacitizen.com/2013/12/11/remembering-jim-hall-i-tributes-by-david-occhipinti-mike-rud-and-roddy-ellias/
