What a fine doggie! How does he keep his whites so white?

quincie, Monday, 12 August 2013 19:46 (ten years ago) link

Well the trick is he doesn't. Luckily huskies have self cleaning coats so unless dirt is caked on it kinda just comes off over the course of the day.

Awesome! more new(ish) husky owners, she looks great, how old?

tsrobodo, Monday, 12 August 2013 22:12 (ten years ago) link

I know right??? She still has dog breath tho but I love to bury my face in the angora scruff on the back of her neck and inhale xp

The rescue group (n0rsled) thinks she is 1.5-2yrs? She is our first husky...and our first dog! But she seems to have unusually good manners and has between so well behaved the last 2 days we spent alone with her (she is being kenneled by n0rsled bc we haven't signed our pet lease yet).

just1n3, Monday, 12 August 2013 22:15 (ten years ago) link

Her original owner almost beat her to death (broken back, broken ribs, punctured lungs, broken teeth, fractured jaw, to name a few of the injuries), n0rsled rehabbed her and rehomed get but it only lasted 6mths - she was left unattended with their elderly small dog and she pretty brutally attacked it, so they surrendered her back to n0rsled.

Her name is neko btw

just1n3, Monday, 12 August 2013 22:19 (ten years ago) link

Max is a cutie! My husband really REALLY wanted an all white husky, but it was neko we fell in love with.

Neko deserves some people who love her, obvs.

Xp ha yes even now she is leaving our entire back seat white with fur after 5 mins

just1n3, Monday, 12 August 2013 23:23 (ten years ago) link

Frustrating to think how many stupendously shitty dog owners there are in this world.
1.5 looks about right though I probably would have guessed younger. Wish I was brave enough to go for a rescue for my first dog, and really hope things go well with Neko. Max came from a breeder across the street from my dads. Used to play with her original breeding pair when we were kids.

His parents both have a fair bit of brown but he only really has it on the ears, they're known to change colour though he hasn't really got any darker so far.

tsrobodo, Monday, 12 August 2013 23:33 (ten years ago) link

Shedding has begun but the furminator has been a lifesaver. Only real issue is the way his fur sticks in my nappy ass hair.

tsrobodo, Monday, 12 August 2013 23:38 (ten years ago) link

Oh and the inexplicable peeing on my bed. knows not to go anywhere in the house but if I leave my room for 10 seconds he will be up on there murdering my mattress.

tsrobodo, Monday, 12 August 2013 23:40 (ten years ago) link

I read (last week, when my dog peed in my bed) that they do that because they're scared & want to bury their scent with yours. In my Doug's case, he's become too attached to me being home all the time and then I took him to grandma's house for a week and she & I went out, leaving him there for a few hours. Got back to a smelly bed. :(

I love Neko :)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Monday, 12 August 2013 23:47 (ten years ago) link

Yeah that makes sense seeing as he's also done it in one of my shoes, trying to get a bit of a headstart on separation anxiety before he's older but he still hows like a werewolf on helium when alone.

tsrobodo, Monday, 12 August 2013 23:56 (ten years ago) link

I was wondering about the furminator - a guy at the adoption didn't recommend it, but I know that it gets rave reviews.

For us, there was never any other option than rescue - it's just something we both feel really strongly about - and we are fortunate that there are so many breed-specific rescue groups in the bay area. We knew we def wanted either a malamute, husky or mix.

Neko has brown eyes, really big paws and a bushy tail so probably a bit of malamute in there, I would guess.

<3 max <3 neko

estela, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 00:35 (ten years ago) link

Vet said it's fine as long as it's not used on knotted or wet fur.

Yeah I completely get that and still wonder if I did the right thing. But then I think about how nervy the first two weeks were and don't think I'd be willing to try again if something had gone wrong with a rescue

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 01:17 (ten years ago) link

We weren't keen on going through a shelter or pound bc we would have been too nervous as well - in that environment it's hard for the staff to really know the true personality of the dog (we saw this play out with my in-laws but it all worked out for them in the end).

Because this is our first dog, because we rent, and because we wanted a breed that happens to be known for being quite stubborn and a bit of a handful, it was important for us to go through a rescue group who fosters the dogs out so their personalities come out and they can really match the dog to the right owner.

Right now they have a husky called solo who is SO ADORABLE but omg - so naughty! We were at an adoption fair and we watched this dog,.annoyed she wasnt getting enough attention, slowly and deliberately grab the corner of the tablecloth on the merch table and yank the whole thing off. I almost cried laughing so hard, but can you imagine how much work she is??

just1n3, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 01:34 (ten years ago) link

That makes a lot of sense, hadn't even realise that there were such fostering schemes but looking back my knowledge of rescue centres was pretty rudimentary up until recently.

Solo sounds awesome but then I think that stubbornness and mischief making is one of the more endearing things about huskies. Of course you want to weed out destructive behaviour but I like the idea of a dog that has its own ideas about how things should be done, that way convincing em to do what you want becomes a kind of game where you have to keep thinking of new ways to outsmart them (If we were keeping score I'd probably be losing badly).

Have you given any thought to whether or not you'll let her off lead?

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 02:18 (ten years ago) link

the off-leash thing is something we'll need to figure out. we have plans to put her/ourselves through a local training school that has a really good rep with nordic breeds. i know that some people believe huskies should never be off-leash in unfenced areas bc their instinct to wander is so strong. i don't think it's something we'll even consider till we've gone through the classes and had her at least a few months, and then we'll discuss it with the n0rsled people (they run a regular husky club meetup which is gonna be a great resource for us). neko's safety is my number one concern, and i don't want to risk her wandering off and getting lost or stolen or hit by a car - or attacking someone's small dog while they're out walking.

just1n3, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 03:13 (ten years ago) link

solo IS awesome - but definitely not the right dog for a first-time husky owner, let alone a first-time dog owner.

just1n3, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 03:16 (ten years ago) link

fwiw have definitely had some terrifying never-gonna-see-that-dog-again moments involving a beloved husky and the great outdoors. dude always came back eventually but it was def on his clock and like "hey guys what's up boy you sure were shouting a lot huh?"

resulting post (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 03:21 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I'm trying to canvass as much opinion as possible to get a general idea of why people decide either way. A few owners I met have said never, the behavioural specialist at the vet has two huskies and an Akita that are completely fine off the leash but she's practically a drill sergeant with them and I don't think I can (or would even want to) emulate that. The trainer I'm in contact with said he's never come across a husky that was incapable of being trained to always respond to recall, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

But then I guess the horror stories always ring the loudest in your head and the dogs safety is paramount. Norsled sounds like a really great organisation so I doubt they'd lead you astray in that regard.
