I am biding my time til DAVE GROHL

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 January 2013 03:06 (eleven years ago) link

I turned off Banks a bit before halfway. I don't know if she's an asshole, but it wasn't very interesting.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 17 January 2013 03:15 (eleven years ago) link

I was looking forward to hearing that one, but now considerably less so.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 January 2013 03:16 (eleven years ago) link

Banks does seem a bit smug, I guess, but I found the chat fairly engaging, actually.

jaymc, Thursday, 17 January 2013 03:31 (eleven years ago) link

how far in is the Rubin talk?

Finally made it through this; Rubin talk is mostly about 3/4ths in, but nothing seriously juicy or snarky. It basically amounted to, "I thought Rubin would have ideas. He didn't. So I had to finish the album quickly."

He also said that the "authenticity" angle of the Cash records amounted to a "parlor trick."

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Thursday, 17 January 2013 03:42 (eleven years ago) link

I'm a little behind, just listening to the Adam Schlesinger one in which Schlesinger spends the whole time being kind of pleasantly bemused about the fact that Maron seems to have listened to a Fountains of Wayne record for the first time maybe a half-hour before the podcast. "Green Day, what about Green Day, they're doing your kind of thing, right, you hang out with those guys?"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 17 January 2013 04:56 (eleven years ago) link

saw him do standup last night. it was really, really, really good.

oh yeah, also, this, I don't think the podcast gives the impression he'd actually be a very good standup, but in fact he is

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 17 January 2013 04:57 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, his standup is great

when he's really on, he can make you tear up AND laugh in the same story

and I love watching the way he carries himself on stage, the way he picks a person to tell a story to, he's really comfortable up there

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 January 2013 05:00 (eleven years ago) link

When I saw him, and he got to the point in his set where he mentioned his cats, I let out a very mumbly "yeah" which he perceived as me hating cats. Because I was so close to the stage, his head whipped around and stared directly into my eyes. "What are you? A dog person? You hate cats?"

I felt about 1 inch tall.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 January 2013 05:57 (eleven years ago) link

:(

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 January 2013 06:00 (eleven years ago) link

I wanted to say "MARC! YOU'VE BEEN MY FAVORITE COMIC SINCE THE 90S! I'VE SEEN ALL YOUR CONAN APPEARANCES! I BOUGHT YOUR BOOK! I BOUGHT ALL YOUR CDS! I ONLY LISTENED TO AIR AMERICA BECAUSE YOU WERE ON IT! I LOVE WTF! I AM SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW THAT I'M FINALLY SEEING YOU LIVE!"

All I managed to get out was "er...no, I love cats."

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 January 2013 06:06 (eleven years ago) link

aww

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 January 2013 06:07 (eleven years ago) link

you should write him e-mail to this effect, it's exactly the kind of thing he'd read on the podcast and then express conflicted feelings about

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 17 January 2013 15:47 (eleven years ago) link

I liked the grohl interview a lot but damn maron has to cool it with the authenticity stuff

President Keyes, Thursday, 17 January 2013 16:51 (eleven years ago) link

Picturing maron's befuddled look when grohl was talking about britney's blackout

President Keyes, Thursday, 17 January 2013 16:54 (eleven years ago) link

Maron has a number of O_o moments, but Dave is such a good dude. Really enjoying this one.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 17 January 2013 16:56 (eleven years ago) link

I'm about halfway through, it keeps getting into a cool groove and then ERK not cool, maybe just bcz Maron's a bit more nervous and trying to impress with what he knows or something? idk

I yelled when Grohl said he bought his six year old daughter the Beatles vinyl boxset. it was cool that she dug it though, lucky bastard

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 January 2013 17:04 (eleven years ago) link

did maron ask him about being an aids denier?

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 17 January 2013 17:19 (eleven years ago) link

this is the peter green doc that Maron mentioned if anyone's interested

I <3 Grohl so much.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 18 January 2013 20:18 (eleven years ago) link

me too. loved hearing him talk about the new Bowie, and just music he digs in general, it's cool when dudes like him are still fans. I love how Maron just kinda blurts SO DO YA MISS KURT like he can't stand it anymore.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 18 January 2013 20:58 (eleven years ago) link

see, that's the kind of stuff that made me unsubscribe.

whose black line is it anyway? (how's life), Friday, 18 January 2013 23:48 (eleven years ago) link

<3 Maron for it, tbh

DavidM, Friday, 18 January 2013 23:56 (eleven years ago) link

me too

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 18 January 2013 23:57 (eleven years ago) link

I think Maron approached it in a way (and then followed up) that Dave didn't recoil and actually talked about it for a short while.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 18 January 2013 23:58 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, it seemed okay to me

President Keyes, Saturday, 19 January 2013 02:07 (eleven years ago) link

This was an entertaining interview! Maybe I'll subscribe again for a while.

how's life, Thursday, 24 January 2013 19:13 (eleven years ago) link

lol I misread today's guest and thought he was interviewing Tim Farriss, the dude from INXS

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 24 January 2013 19:17 (eleven years ago) link

"I don't think there's going to be a poem that comes along and changes the entire culture."

Maron sure sets a pretty high bar for poetry. Are any current stand up sets going to change the entire culture?

President Keyes, Monday, 28 January 2013 13:17 (eleven years ago) link

Any poem that set out to do that would be terrible

President Keyes, Monday, 28 January 2013 13:18 (eleven years ago) link

I'm afraid to listen to the Tim Ferriss one

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 28 January 2013 16:02 (eleven years ago) link

Not sure if it was just my mood, but I found the Lucinda Williams one unbearable. Mostly due to Maron.

sofatruck, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 02:11 (eleven years ago) link

I had a bad feeling about it so I thought I'd pass

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 02:27 (eleven years ago) link

it was cute when lucinda started flirting with him at the end

President Keyes, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 09:21 (eleven years ago) link

Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner separately this week.

a tidy profit in Russia (Eazy), Monday, 4 February 2013 16:34 (eleven years ago) link

mel brooks took drum lessons from buddy rich!

keef qua keef (Jordan), Monday, 4 February 2013 16:38 (eleven years ago) link

Mel Brooks is just exceptional; a lesson in why Marc deserves every success.

sean gramophone, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 19:59 (eleven years ago) link

been meaning to listen

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:13 (eleven years ago) link

It's really special. Helps a lot that Brooks is so willing to open up and to try to find connections with Marc. I hope the Reiner one is as good.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:18 (eleven years ago) link

I totally wasn't expecting them talk about David Lynch

President Keyes, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 22:52 (eleven years ago) link

WHERE ARE SETHRO AND JAH???????

some girls, they rape so easy (sunny successor), Friday, 8 February 2013 04:48 (eleven years ago) link

c'mon, it totally made sense to hold the Brooks ep so he could double with Reiner in the same week

( ͡° ͜ʖ͡°) (sic), Friday, 8 February 2013 04:50 (eleven years ago) link

xpost sometime in June?

President Keyes, Friday, 8 February 2013 09:39 (eleven years ago) link

I got a little bummed when I realized Carl Reiner received more phone calls during this interview than I have in the last two months.

Chuck Lint, Saturday, 9 February 2013 07:58 (eleven years ago) link

I was thinking of how pissed Maron would have been if any young dude came to his garage and took 5 calls on his cell during the interview

President Keyes, Saturday, 9 February 2013 10:28 (eleven years ago) link

I wondered if they were joke phone calls from Mel Brooks, as most consisted of Carl saying "I'm just doin a... OK, bye" and putting the phone down.

DavidM, Saturday, 9 February 2013 10:35 (eleven years ago) link

If that was true Carl would certainly be the ultimate straight man. Way over 80%.

Chuck Lint, Sunday, 10 February 2013 07:23 (eleven years ago) link

kind of a dick move for Maron to call out the UCB like that without having Besser or someone on to give their side.
