WTF with Marc Maron (it's a podcast)

I turned off Banks a bit before halfway. I don't know if she's an asshole, but it wasn't very interesting.

I was looking forward to hearing that one, but now considerably less so.

Banks does seem a bit smug, I guess, but I found the chat fairly engaging, actually.

how far in is the Rubin talk?

Finally made it through this; Rubin talk is mostly about 3/4ths in, but nothing seriously juicy or snarky. It basically amounted to, "I thought Rubin would have ideas. He didn't. So I had to finish the album quickly."

He also said that the "authenticity" angle of the Cash records amounted to a "parlor trick."

I'm a little behind, just listening to the Adam Schlesinger one in which Schlesinger spends the whole time being kind of pleasantly bemused about the fact that Maron seems to have listened to a Fountains of Wayne record for the first time maybe a half-hour before the podcast. "Green Day, what about Green Day, they're doing your kind of thing, right, you hang out with those guys?"

saw him do standup last night. it was really, really, really good.

oh yeah, also, this, I don't think the podcast gives the impression he'd actually be a very good standup, but in fact he is

yeah, his standup is great

when he's really on, he can make you tear up AND laugh in the same story

and I love watching the way he carries himself on stage, the way he picks a person to tell a story to, he's really comfortable up there

When I saw him, and he got to the point in his set where he mentioned his cats, I let out a very mumbly "yeah" which he perceived as me hating cats. Because I was so close to the stage, his head whipped around and stared directly into my eyes. "What are you? A dog person? You hate cats?"

I felt about 1 inch tall.

I wanted to say "MARC! YOU'VE BEEN MY FAVORITE COMIC SINCE THE 90S! I'VE SEEN ALL YOUR CONAN APPEARANCES! I BOUGHT YOUR BOOK! I BOUGHT ALL YOUR CDS! I ONLY LISTENED TO AIR AMERICA BECAUSE YOU WERE ON IT! I LOVE WTF! I AM SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW THAT I'M FINALLY SEEING YOU LIVE!"

All I managed to get out was "er...no, I love cats."

you should write him e-mail to this effect, it's exactly the kind of thing he'd read on the podcast and then express conflicted feelings about

I liked the grohl interview a lot but damn maron has to cool it with the authenticity stuff

Maron has a number of O_o moments, but Dave is such a good dude. Really enjoying this one.

I'm about halfway through, it keeps getting into a cool groove and then ERK not cool, maybe just bcz Maron's a bit more nervous and trying to impress with what he knows or something? idk

I yelled when Grohl said he bought his six year old daughter the Beatles vinyl boxset. it was cool that she dug it though, lucky bastard

me too. loved hearing him talk about the new Bowie, and just music he digs in general, it's cool when dudes like him are still fans. I love how Maron just kinda blurts SO DO YA MISS KURT like he can't stand it anymore.

Mel Brooks is just exceptional; a lesson in why Marc deserves every success.

It's really special. Helps a lot that Brooks is so willing to open up and to try to find connections with Marc. I hope the Reiner one is as good.

I got a little bummed when I realized Carl Reiner received more phone calls during this interview than I have in the last two months.

I was thinking of how pissed Maron would have been if any young dude came to his garage and took 5 calls on his cell during the interview

I wondered if they were joke phone calls from Mel Brooks, as most consisted of Carl saying "I'm just doin a... OK, bye" and putting the phone down.

If that was true Carl would certainly be the ultimate straight man. Way over 80%.

kind of a dick move for Maron to call out the UCB like that without having Besser or someone on to give their side.
