I keep looking around for the Velodyne vPulse IEMs but these guys seem to have really confidential distribution...

r|t|c, Monday, 25 February 2013 02:33 (eleven years ago) link

Hama got back to me after a week or so at the back end of last year quoting £5 handling, tho I never used them cos I got some headphones for Christmas. I've got a direct contact email if they don't get back to you?

fizzles tics (Fizzles), Monday, 25 February 2013 07:33 (eleven years ago) link

I've had good times with these: http://www.rha-audio.com/earphones/ma350.html

They have a fabric cord which has failed on me once, but five year warranty and they got a replacement to me the next day.

these are the business.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Monday, 25 February 2013 07:54 (eleven years ago) link

got some shure SE215s last fall, no troubles so far. hoping that if they go bad it will be the cable, since the earpieces are detachable. great sound after a little break-in period for the fit, but now the ear attachments are getting a little too worn-in - probably time to switch them for a fresh pair.

j., Monday, 25 February 2013 08:03 (eleven years ago) link

yeah thanks fizzles that email would be good actually, still getting no word

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Monoprice-Premium-Hi-Fi-Style-Headphone/dp/B007SP2CO2

so these are pretty great! impressive build quality despite all plastic. proper detachable cables even! not really used to a, uh ~soundstage~ this immersive but i think i'll overcome fatigue in time

although admittedly i am a totally disgusting savage when it comes to audiophilia what with listening to totally disgusting savage 128kps mp3s all day

rob da bank's headphone special, recorded "binaurally"

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 1 March 2013 10:27 (eleven years ago) link

i think that means it sounds like it was recorded in a bin

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 1 March 2013 10:27 (eleven years ago) link

lol @ pun, but binaural recording is actually an interesting idea if you're anticipating the outcome being listened to pretty much exclusively on headphones.

Binaural recording is kinda mind-boggling. I have to admit that before I heard of it I hadn't even considered how the ears manage to pick up stuff in 3D.

what are you soldering?

乒乓, Friday, 1 March 2013 14:35 (eleven years ago) link

I'd guess a new TRS plug to the headphone cable. I am an EE, and I've failed at this many times

hah I've done it a few times

乒乓, Friday, 1 March 2013 17:49 (eleven years ago) link

Where do you buy the TRS connector? I bought some cheap ones that made things difficult (not to say my soldering skills don't suck. They do)

that Django got me Nuages (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 1 March 2013 17:54 (eleven years ago) link

places like mouser and digikey, also diy audio places online

good brands are neutrik and switchcraft

they also make right-angle ones

What's a good pair of over-the-ear headphones for under $50? Noise cancellation is a plus.

four months pass...

the tip of the input jack on my beloved Grado SR 80s somehow became dislodged from the rest of it and is now stuck inside the headphone output of my computer. i had a nightmare about rats and then woke up to this. is this a situation anyone here has experience dealing with? should i just take my computer to the apple store?

fervently nice (Treeship), Monday, 29 July 2013 15:17 (ten years ago) link

Apple genius squad was a bust. Told me to replace the logic board. The headphone jack was fixed thanks to the heroic efforts of a PC Richards technician. Going to write a letter to Grado, expressing a sense of betrayal that their headphones were defective... headphones I have loved so dearly.

fervently nice (Treeship), Monday, 29 July 2013 18:48 (ten years ago) link

Im going to make sure my letter to Grado is tear-stained.

yes, my techincal problems are often proceeded by this nightmare

good to know im not the only one who has had this prophetic vision. worst part of the nightmare for me was the embarrassment as i had to run away from the rats - who were only chasing me - while everyone else at the party just chilled.

fervently nice (Treeship), Monday, 29 July 2013 18:56 (ten years ago) link

I suggest you forget the headphones and first find the snitch in your drug cartel.

as a default, or maybe out of laziness, i've been using skull candy headphones for a while now. anyone have an opinion on them, or on these cool-looking wood-headphones i'm considering?

one month passes...

Just bought the RBH EP2 IEMs after the Wirecutter declared them best in the 200 USD category - not sure I have found the best seal with the Comply tips provided but Random Access Memories is sounding pretty sweet so far.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 12:44 (ten years ago) link

Wouldn't recommend mine, just got them covered in soup.

I got the Grado SR-80s and they sound amazing, but they're really heavy and hurt my ears after an hour or so. Plus they seem to leak sound. I want something for work. Any recs?

frogbs, Thursday, 24 October 2013 15:22 (ten years ago) link

looking for something more in line with the Sony MDR-NC7 noise cancellors which are not exactly the best sounding but they are light. only problem is the noise cancelling setting seems to blast a lot of random hiss into my ears lately and they don't really sound good with it off.

frogbs, Thursday, 24 October 2013 15:31 (ten years ago) link

Grado are open cans so that's why they seem to bleed but open cans are much better for your ears than closed.

I wear the igrado at work ( grados light running around model) and they sound so gorgeous. They will feel tight the first few days until the plastic arch kind of wears in.

still hands down the best earbuds i've ever used, possibly better than any other travelin' headphones too

j., Thursday, 24 October 2013 16:37 (ten years ago) link

i like the traditional ones (not the sideways behind the head models) - IMO it's much more the heaviness of the things that seem to crush my ear bones than the sound leaking that makes me not wear them

alternatively, I'd like to know why I get this weird intermittant hiss with the noise cancellers I have. sometimes it's just in one ear and it can get very loud. because I like the way these feel.

got these via the Wirecutter recommendation (they're listed under "Best $150 headphones" even though they're only $87 at Amazon.)

they're great

has anyone tried a pair of bose (i know) in ears?

caek, Thursday, 24 October 2013 22:00 (ten years ago) link

nay

the headphone market is such a cottage industry these days, so many small companies out there. best route as usual is to try a few as it's all personal preference but that can get expensive.
