idk this feels album track-y but not bad

rap steve gadd (D-40), Monday, 14 January 2013 05:25 (eleven years ago) link

yeah it could easily be the weakest track on a good album. wouldn't be the first time that was true of a big event lead single.

some dude, Monday, 14 January 2013 05:28 (eleven years ago) link

Strange intro. Chintzy's a good word for the main section of the track, although that glissando is nice. I don't think it's Jay that's killing the momentum. It's the change-up in the tempo and in the production. But I do like how it picks back up at the end. Interesting to hear whether the rest of the production on this album follows similar form.

underwhelming :\

teledyldonix, Monday, 14 January 2013 05:30 (eleven years ago) link

First the Bowie single, and now this...Chopped 'n' screwed tempo big in '13.

Chief Duff (Eazy), Monday, 14 January 2013 05:36 (eleven years ago) link

Werkin' Girls does it too, with better results. Trend probably comes from those who started slowing down their tracks to ~75bpm for the obligatory dubstep section.

The Reverend, Monday, 14 January 2013 05:41 (eleven years ago) link

really good imo

flopson, Monday, 14 January 2013 05:44 (eleven years ago) link

love the chintzy horns

flopson, Monday, 14 January 2013 05:45 (eleven years ago) link

chintzy r&b production is secretly one of the best kinds of production

The Reverend, Monday, 14 January 2013 05:46 (eleven years ago) link

this reminds me of that debate over that one ne-yo song that i hated to death

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 January 2013 05:49 (eleven years ago) link

also that one ne-yo song that i hated to death

"champagne life," that wretched song

"champagne life" was dope. gotta ride for two-step joints here.

The Reverend, Monday, 14 January 2013 05:53 (eleven years ago) link

Doesn't bode well.

tsrobodo, Monday, 14 January 2013 06:15 (eleven years ago) link

I've played this three times and... nope, not liking it. :/

Roz, Monday, 14 January 2013 06:34 (eleven years ago) link

i've played this about seven times and yes i think i am kind of liking it

monotony, Monday, 14 January 2013 06:44 (eleven years ago) link

and yes that intro is ungainly and jay-z is unsurprisingly lacklustre but those harps! the corny horns! JT you can show me a few things.

monotony, Monday, 14 January 2013 06:48 (eleven years ago) link

The intro had me fearing the worst, but the song isn't bad, really. It's not that good, either, but it improves in the slow section after Jay's interminable guest verse - and for some reason the main groove sounds better when it comes back around in the mostly wordless coda. No way the album's gonna be as epochal as the last one was unless Tim has some genius new co-producer nobody's heard waiting in the wings. Still looking forward to it, cautiously.

mobs of burly teen christgaus (thewufs), Monday, 14 January 2013 07:10 (eleven years ago) link

JT and Timbo go Las Vegas. I kinda like it though, Jiggaboo and all.

future kendricks (longneck), Monday, 14 January 2013 09:19 (eleven years ago) link

i quite like that he's gone with this type of song for his big comeback, and the song itself isn't bad at all, but the intro and jay-z need to be cut out so badly

lex pretend, Monday, 14 January 2013 09:25 (eleven years ago) link

Ha, heard the intro, thought 'why the fuck has he released a skit' Got me worried for a minute. Got a lovely vibe, bit Inspiration Information.

owenf, Monday, 14 January 2013 09:30 (eleven years ago) link

Jiggaboo

uh

The Reverend, Monday, 14 January 2013 09:46 (eleven years ago) link

really sorry about that - pretty inexcusable - i was thinking along the lines of jigga being the huge r&b single's best friend (boo) but it came out 100% wrong.

future kendricks (longneck), Monday, 14 January 2013 10:04 (eleven years ago) link

pretty lightweight summer joint, sounds fine to me

sort of expecting something along the lines of "your drums, your love" though

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 14 January 2013 10:52 (eleven years ago) link

not possible to be MORE lightweight than alunageorge

lex pretend, Monday, 14 January 2013 10:58 (eleven years ago) link

haha i was waiting for that, or something like that

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 14 January 2013 11:01 (eleven years ago) link

Loving the new jam

Raymond Cummings, Monday, 14 January 2013 11:33 (eleven years ago) link

I was expecting something very bad after the first reactions but I just listened to it and it's pretty smooth.
nothing amazing/big comeback but really nice.
I think this could grow on me.
anyway, I don't really see how he could have came up with something that meets the expectations after such a long time.

This is precisely what Alfred means when he calls something B+.

He means C+.

as if the intro and hook weren't weak enough, then comes a Jay-Z verse. why? why?!?!!?

surfboard p coming out of retirement for this one, damn

some dude, Monday, 14 January 2013 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

Would've loved Gucci Mane on this. Or T.I.. Even Drake! ANYONE BUT JAY-Z.

bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Monday, 14 January 2013 16:18 (eleven years ago) link

or NO GUEST AT ALL

but i bet i hated "sexy back" at first and then the album was brilliant so still holdin out hope.

there was so much on Futuresex that hinted to some awesome territory for him. why can't he go further into the sound he hinted at on the title track and "sexy ladies" etc

this is a step backward

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Monday, 14 January 2013 16:20 (eleven years ago) link

also, Justin timberlake is excited about getting dressed up in a suit. you're a fucking adult millionaire dude. get over it

whatever, i like this, jay-z verse apart. underwhelming as a single, though.

Haha, that's probably true. I don't mind it at all though. And Jay-Z is mostly there to let the world that this is a big and important song. I think he does an alright job. No guest at all would be preferable though.

i bet drake's on the album tho

surfboards is right about "sexyback" tho

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 January 2013 16:36 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i've never loved that song but i can appreciate it as a lead single, especially now

some dude, Monday, 14 January 2013 16:37 (eleven years ago) link

idk feel like "Brand New" never takes off as much as it should and Justified doesn't really hold up outside of the singles mostly

Still like part 1 even though its flaws became more apparent over time. part 2 has some good stuff amidst some bad ideas but can't say I come back to it much. this single's pretty eh imo but I'll take it over "Mirrors"

nova, Sunday, 13 April 2014 19:28 (ten years ago) link

"Brand New" off the Pharrell album is so easily my favorite thing he's done in a while, really reaffirms that i much prefer P to Timbaland as a creative foil for Justin.

― some dude, Sunday, April 13, 2014 12:30 PM (3 hours ago) Bookmark

it's so horrible that pharrell is putting "marilyn monroe" out as the next single, that song is trash

le goon (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 13 April 2014 19:54 (ten years ago) link

lol i like "mirrors" a lot and tolerate "suit and tie", but haven't these songs been widely panned?

JT is coming back to play Chicago at the end of the year. Which would make this his ... sixth stop here since winter of 2013? At least?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 13 April 2014 20:53 (ten years ago) link

the near-unanimous hatred for Mirrors is so weird to me. like i understand some ppl not liking it but everyone? obviously i am wrong about it.

alpine static, Sunday, 13 April 2014 21:00 (ten years ago) link

steendriver dysphoria hoos (The Reverend), Sunday, 13 April 2014 21:03 (ten years ago) link

I love Mirrors, haters be damned.

schwantz, Sunday, 13 April 2014 21:21 (ten years ago) link

i mean, let's be real, any song that sold millions of downloads and broke radio airplay records is not unanimously hated. outside of this message board it's pretty well regarded. even on Pazz & Jop it just barely missed the top 10.

sucks tho.

some dude, Sunday, 13 April 2014 21:34 (ten years ago) link

i looked up the chorus cuz I find the opening "with me/with me" rhyme really insipid and grating, and it turns out he threw a "fuck" in there too that i was unaware of.

― da croupier, Sunday, April 13, 2014 11:05 AM (8 hours ago)

the lazy rhyming doesn't really bother me, since the rhyme is such an unimportant part of the hook -- it's all about the groove. it doesn't really get in the way

surfbort memes get played out, totally (k3vin k.), Sunday, 13 April 2014 23:46 (ten years ago) link

xpost: yeah i didn't mean unanimous globally, just 'round here. i'm kinda surprised it placed so high on p&j

i don't suppose any of you clever internet detectives could track down the three edits ("no bullshit" and "album side length" and "just hooks") of this album that were originally posted here:
