Just discovered this on a tip from another ex kcou dj and holy shit, it's like all I want to listen to.
Great for work. Bumped a (not)Load Records thread looking for any background info. Is anyone listening to this?

this don rickles documentary starts off with harry dean stanton singing "you gotta quick kickin my dog arround" (made most popular by the skillet lickers.)

Listening to an artist called Tonstartssbandht. Weird bedroom psych I guess? It was a link in Ed Schrader's "related" tab. I kind of like it.

The Who Sell Out, the nineties cd that adds another side or so of great outtakes.

Trip Maker, Sunday, 17 March 2013 18:51 (eleven years ago) link

Possibly my favorite Who thing is the cover of "Man with Money" - one of the outtakes on the A Quick One CD. Everly Brothers song and they just nail it.

timellison, Monday, 18 March 2013 03:14 (eleven years ago) link

That is a great song! Never heard the Who version, will have to look for that.

^ Acting on Impulse: The Best of Five or Six

nerve_pylon, Monday, 8 April 2013 16:21 (eleven years ago) link

i don't listen to much of the angsty indie-rock that dominated my late-teens/early-20s anymore but i still put this dude's records on a few times a year. getting all nostalgic and teary-eyed at my desk thinking about living room shows and smoking weed to the point of being borderline comatose.

especially love this song, but the whole thing is great. i got a nice copy of the reissue, which tacks on an additional track on side D.

your holiness, we have an official energy drink (Z S), Friday, 26 April 2013 00:03 (ten years ago) link

from the liner notes: "The masterful layered funk of 'Okuzua' is an unhurried slice of Afrobeat with amazing Afro brass and roaring vocals. Orchestra Lissanga are from the former Zaire and recorded several distinctive Lingala albums. The track here was taken from the original master tapes but little is known of the original release. It may well have only been previously available on a cassette."

"unhurried" is totally correct, and it's a quality i love in music. it's not that it's slow - it's kinda mid-tempo to upbeat - it's more that the musicians are content to let the melody and groove sink in through many repetitions, without rushing into a solo or instrumental break. "slice" is totally correct, as this is tastier than the best cheese pizza. "roaring vocals" is incorrect. the vocals aren't whispered or anything, but it sounds like the vocalist could comfortably groove to this thing for 4+ hours without touching lemon tea afterward. coooool stuff, love it.
