I was tempted to listen to Jakob Dylan just to hear the insane (hopefully!) awkwardness of Marc trying not to talk about Bob Dylan. (Jakob has a notoriously strict "Don't mention my dad" policy wrt media and marketing, if I recall.)

Doesn't do much media then?

Did Maron hook up with Jakob Dylan via Kerri Kenney? IIRC she mentioned on WTF that she and Jakob were friends.
― jaymc, Friday, 11 January 2013 02:34 (eleven years ago) link
i tried and failed to get through blues traveller, but i enjoyed the jakob dylan one, especially the stuff about his bad experience making a record with rick rubin.
― keef qua keef (Jordan), Friday, 11 January 2013 15:12 (eleven years ago) link
Oh, there's Rubin talk? I may give in and listen to it.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 11 January 2013 15:21 (eleven years ago) link
can't wait to hear again about how much "Nevermind" blew the mind of the 28 year old Maron
― President Keyes, Friday, 11 January 2013 15:28 (eleven years ago) link
x-post when Dylan started criticizing the Cash American albums, I was like "it's on"
I actually agree with Jakob on the Neil Diamond/Rubin album. I thought stripping him back totally missed everything that Neil Diamond is about.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 11 January 2013 18:28 (eleven years ago) link
Surprised that the Jakob Dylan interview really wasn't painful or offputting. He actually seems like a decent dude.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 11 January 2013 19:04 (eleven years ago) link
how far in is the Rubin talk?
― ( ͡° ͜ʖ͡°) (sic), Saturday, 12 January 2013 14:12 (eleven years ago) link
it's throughout the whole interview--first about Cash and Diamond, then later about his own Rubin album
― President Keyes, Saturday, 12 January 2013 14:56 (eleven years ago) link
damn you guys
― ( ͡° ͜ʖ͡°) (sic), Saturday, 12 January 2013 15:17 (eleven years ago) link
yeah I still dunno if I can bring myself to do it. Jakob Dylan's about as interesting as paint to me

― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 January 2013 03:06 (eleven years ago) link
I turned off Banks a bit before halfway. I don't know if she's an asshole, but it wasn't very interesting.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 17 January 2013 03:15 (eleven years ago) link
I was looking forward to hearing that one, but now considerably less so.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 January 2013 03:16 (eleven years ago) link
Banks does seem a bit smug, I guess, but I found the chat fairly engaging, actually.
― jaymc, Thursday, 17 January 2013 03:31 (eleven years ago) link
Finally made it through this; Rubin talk is mostly about 3/4ths in, but nothing seriously juicy or snarky. It basically amounted to, "I thought Rubin would have ideas. He didn't. So I had to finish the album quickly."
He also said that the "authenticity" angle of the Cash records amounted to a "parlor trick."
― Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Thursday, 17 January 2013 03:42 (eleven years ago) link
I'm a little behind, just listening to the Adam Schlesinger one in which Schlesinger spends the whole time being kind of pleasantly bemused about the fact that Maron seems to have listened to a Fountains of Wayne record for the first time maybe a half-hour before the podcast. "Green Day, what about Green Day, they're doing your kind of thing, right, you hang out with those guys?"
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 17 January 2013 04:56 (eleven years ago) link
oh yeah, also, this, I don't think the podcast gives the impression he'd actually be a very good standup, but in fact he is
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 17 January 2013 04:57 (eleven years ago) link
yeah, his standup is great
when he's really on, he can make you tear up AND laugh in the same story
and I love watching the way he carries himself on stage, the way he picks a person to tell a story to, he's really comfortable up there
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 17 January 2013 05:00 (eleven years ago) link
When I saw him, and he got to the point in his set where he mentioned his cats, I let out a very mumbly "yeah" which he perceived as me hating cats. Because I was so close to the stage, his head whipped around and stared directly into my eyes. "What are you? A dog person? You hate cats?"
I felt about 1 inch tall.

I wanted to say "MARC! YOU'VE BEEN MY FAVORITE COMIC SINCE THE 90S! I'VE SEEN ALL YOUR CONAN APPEARANCES! I BOUGHT YOUR BOOK! I BOUGHT ALL YOUR CDS! I ONLY LISTENED TO AIR AMERICA BECAUSE YOU WERE ON IT! I LOVE WTF! I AM SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW THAT I'M FINALLY SEEING YOU LIVE!"
All I managed to get out was "er...no, I love cats."

you should write him e-mail to this effect, it's exactly the kind of thing he'd read on the podcast and then express conflicted feelings about

I liked the grohl interview a lot but damn maron has to cool it with the authenticity stuff
― President Keyes, Thursday, 17 January 2013 16:51 (eleven years ago) link
Picturing maron's befuddled look when grohl was talking about britney's blackout
― President Keyes, Thursday, 17 January 2013 16:54 (eleven years ago) link
Maron has a number of O_o moments, but Dave is such a good dude. Really enjoying this one.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 17 January 2013 16:56 (eleven years ago) link
I'm about halfway through, it keeps getting into a cool groove and then ERK not cool, maybe just bcz Maron's a bit more nervous and trying to impress with what he knows or something? idk
I yelled when Grohl said he bought his six year old daughter the Beatles vinyl boxset. it was cool that she dug it though, lucky bastard

me too. loved hearing him talk about the new Bowie, and just music he digs in general, it's cool when dudes like him are still fans. I love how Maron just kinda blurts SO DO YA MISS KURT like he can't stand it anymore.

I think Maron approached it in a way (and then followed up) that Dave didn't recoil and actually talked about it for a short while.

"I don't think there's going to be a poem that comes along and changes the entire culture."
Maron sure sets a pretty high bar for poetry. Are any current stand up sets going to change the entire culture?
